3 module tracks

Following on from discussion on the expense of modular. Please consider this a repository for your 3 module tracks. Patch notes would be gratefully welcomed.

Cost of modular thread

This is super. Thanks for getting the ball rolling.

I recorded this a couple months ago shortly after receiving the Folktek Mescaline, which consists of three modules.

@joshhh brought this series of videos to my attention in a thread I created regarding my own costs and considerations for my modular journey, and even though it isn’t my content, this definitely belongs in the thread. Lots of variety with just a small set of relatively common modules. They even posted a brand new video in the series for this Xmas Eve.

Comparative Irrelevance is the absolute master of 3 module tracks. Here is a recent favourite:

You should post some of your videos!

I agree with @caelmore. This piece by @whitenoises is one of my favorite three-modules pieces:

I need to try this with several subsets of 3 modules from my 7U… I’ll post here if I do anything interesting.

@disquiet @caelmore thank you guys! I want to do some more 3 module pieces actually — I find it useful for forcing myself to find new and creative ways of using the modules at my disposal. Definitely can get some surprising results!

Since I was out for Christmas I made a little lunchbox to take with me with: Frap Tools Sapèl, Make Noise Morphagene and miniClouds (Mutable Clouds clone in 8hp) + a Mix 01 module that i use as a headphone output.

Here’s one of the things I recorded:

no recording for ya rn (out of town for a week) but upon my return expect something made with teletype + just friends + 3 sisters

Can’t wait to hear this! I’m thinking about adding Three Sisters as my second module after Just Friends, super excited to see what you’ve done with this combo and Teletype.

quick thing this morning using Tides, Morphagene & Just Friends

wasn’t intentionally sticking with 3 modules - added Three Sisters (and I think it got more interesting) but faded out before then for these purposes.

I tried this a bit yesterday first with Maths, Ultrafold and Chronoblob and then replacing the Chronoblob with Basimilus Iteritas Alter.

I know that the goal is to explore different creative spaces and that it’s not a competition at all but it did feel like cheating a bit to use something like the BIA that is basically a full featured voice by itself.

Anyway, I got some interesting noisy/industrial rhythms and textures out of that, with the Ultrafold actually doing most of the heavy lifting (and Maths as a mixer, rhythm generator and oscillator), I’ll try to upload something when I have some time.

Here’s a recording of that 3 modules patch, it’s not the type of music I usually do and it’s not a proper track but just a few minutes of random noisy things but it was fun to make anyway…

The only modules/gear used :

Makenoise Maths : generates triggers for the BIA with channel 1, bass oscillator with channel 4, attenuator/mixer. Channel 1 modulates channel 4’s both input using channel 2 as attenuator and the sum output is plugged in channel 4’s trig input, which creates the basic rhythm.

WMD/SSF Ultrafold : processes the Maths’ output, with the BIA in the feedback input (the feedback amount is CV controlled from Maths). Input drive and wavefold at maximum except right at the beginning.

Noise Engineering BIA : percussion sound generator, with a bit of modulation from various Maths output but not that much. Manual tweaking of the morph parameter changes the sound a lot. Changing from skin to liquid algo basically adds a kick drum. Setting the attack to lower values adds snare-ish white noise.

Well, I decided to lose some potential sleep time and to use 3 other modules to try something else without unpatching the previous experiment.

This time : Intellijel Noise Tools 1U, Mutable Instruments Rings and Alright Devices Chronoblob. I can post details later but it’s basically one big complicated feedback loop, and the clicks come from the Chronoblob rhythmically getting in and out of hold mode. I’m not really sure where the clipping comes from

Time to sleep now, sorry for the spammy 3 posts in a row…

I’ve already posted this excerpt elsewhere, but this is a 3 module track. Pamela’s new workout providing gates, Just Friends providing sound, ER-301 providing noise and lowpass via the excellent Trash Tape custom unit by @scttcmpbll.
This is just me patching. It goes on a bit this way and then I unpatch, and the track is done

Very inspiring stuff! Thanks for sharing these everybody!

I’m looking forward to getting something down in the next few days. I’ve got a couple of modules that I know I need to explore more deeply. I have new a 84hp case so I think I’ll put the modules I need to explore plus a few utilities/mod sources and challenge myself. This thread will keep me motivated! Thanks
