In Live 11 you will have a feature in every instrument rack to take snapshot of settings. This means that you can have an initial setting saved and then recall it by clicking on the preset (you could of course midi-map this button). You can then have 16 parameters (macros) that you can tweak and recall.

Basically I see many people here asking for Live to cover Elektron features and the answer is : while it was already doable with m4l plugins before, Live 11 takes a LOT of cues from the Elektron workflow and add them beautifully and naturally into the native Live workflow.

Does anyone know if it is possible to separate midi Chanel on Ableton from the project tempo?

Meaning having a dedicated tempo parameter for a specific midi track.

Is there a M4Live device that could do this? I donā€™t know max but I could really use something like this.

you canā€™t separate a midi channel from the project tempo, no.
two possible workarounds:

  • select all notes in a midi clip and use the right most midi stretch marker (just beneath the scrub area where warp markers in audio clips appear), and stretch the clip to a tempo you want. then adjust the clip length accordingly. use a bpm/beat calculator if needed.
  • change the project bpm to the tempo you want for the midi clip, freeze/bounce that track to audio, change the tempo back and work with the audio file unwarped.

Thanks. Iā€™ve used the first one but itā€™s not mappable so itā€™s kinda of a pain to use in a live setting. Is there anyway to map it?

you could use the arpeggiator in free running mode perhaps? not idea if thatā€™s a useable solution for the scenario youā€™re working in, but perhaps.

edit: thereā€™s a free max for live arpeggiator thatā€™s a bit more advanced than the stock arpeggiator, that might be better suited for the task. It lets you set tempo in bpm, free from the project tempo.

Well, after a multi-year hiatus Iā€™ve repurchased Live and am getting back into ITB productionā€¦ itā€™s funny how familiar it all feels, despite skipping multiple versions. Totally forgot that metronome on/off was assigned to the ~ by default, though :rofl:

Anyway, no purpose to this other than to say I canā€™t wait to dig back in and looking forward to everything 11 has to offerā€¦

Could anyone tell me how i can find out if any particular third party plugin is causing Ableton to crash without going through each one individually and removing them? Is it possible that plugins that arenā€™t even open in a session could cause a crash? I really dont know where to begin with this. Iā€™m not crashing consistently but often enough for it to be a problem. Iā€™m finding this very difficult to troubleshoot on my own.

Are you on the Beta 11 or the 10 version? The beta is quite crashy (Ableton betas usually are more stable, I think they broke a lot of things with 11 to add stuff like MPE). The Ableton 11 cpu meter could help pinpoint problems though.

What do you mean by not open? If a plugin is dropped on a track on your session consider it open wether its UI window is displayed or not.

I mean that a plugin is in the Component or VST folder and Ableton is recognizing it but I do not have it inserted on a track. Could plugins that are merely installed cause crashes or would then need to be inserted on a track?

No, I have never heard of a plugin causing a crash for being scanned by Ableton on launch, it has to be in the session to cause problems. Ableton isnā€™t the best DAW to pinpoint or handle crashing plugins (although itā€™s usually pretty stable but you can never control every possible outcome).

When it opens again, create a crash report, go to that folder and unzip the contents of said crash report. Iā€™m on my phone right now but iirc there should be a log file on the preference folder.
Open that log file and scroll to the end (it contains all crashes for that version) and work your way up. Depending on the kind of crash, so plugin or M4l patch is not always mentioned.
Re not instantiated plugins: nope, they wonā€™t crash ONCE they have been successfully scanned.

Does anyone know of a m4l device or plugin that can pitchshift vocals live in the same way that abletonā€˜s complex warp algorithm does? In my next D&D session, Iā€˜ll have to roleplay a giant and Iā€˜d love for his voice to have some more oomph. :laughing: or is there a way to access the complex pro algorithm as a live effect?

I already tried a few things in the m4l pitch & time package but it just sounds like Iā€˜m a criminal that is trying to hide their identity.

not m4l devices, but perhaps you should look info formant shifting plugins. there is one free that i know of, mautopitch by melda (only available in their free bundle). itā€™s also a tuning plugin, but if you just set it to the slowest settings and all notes perhaps the tuning isnā€™t so audible. other paid alternatives are vocalsynth from izotope, manipulator from polyverse, elastique pitch from zplane or little alter boy from soundtoys. theyā€™re a bit costly but have demos, and all of them allows you to pitch shift and formant shift independentlyā€¦ which is what i think you want to do.

sure, while not sounding perhaps as good as the live complex algorithm, using a formant shifter to compensate after a pitch shifter can get you a good result. so first you pitch it down, then formant shift it up. all the plugins i mentioned can do just that : )
