Does anyone have any insight into why ableton has not implemented the ability to automate effects values and MPE when multiple MIDI tracks are selected in the piano roll? It allows for it when you are working with just one clip / track, but once 2 or more are selected the option disappears. I was initially really excited at the idea of having this be possible because I would be able to utilize the piano roll more like I was writing sheet music where notes and automation could coexist on the same window using the focus button to essentially freeze editing of all tracks parameters excluding the one I’m currently working on while maintaining the visual cues of note pitch, length, and automation. Could someone here shed some light on this or anything I may be missing / doing wrong?

This week I learned that the CV Clock device seems to work well as clock source for the e-rm multiclock. This is nice because the CV Clock device has it’s own output selector so you can just slap it on your master channel and leave it there in your default set, saving having to have a clock track.

OK, I’ve got a strange situation that I have never seen before.

I’m mixing a set and the MAIN channel automation is not working. It’s not displaying the track volume level. And while I can click it and draw curves, they don’t actually show up or have any effect.

Other channels have automation that is displaying and actually working.

Anyone ever seen this before?

Thanks!

Oh, actually, closing and reopening the project fixed it. But still, very weird behavior indeed…

I never experienced this…
I hate it when something weird happens once, you never know if it will happen again…

Just an idea about the issue you may have:

Just a heads-up to anyone using the 12.1 beta, the excellent MIDI Tools by Philip Meyer are now available among the downloads.

I picked them up from their Gumroad a while ago and was very impressed (they have more, so be sure to check them out as well if you enjoy the included ones).

Are they now part of Live?

I’m not sure if there’s an official announcement, but it seems like at least a few will be (maybe a few exclusive ones as well, I didn’t get a chance to investigate which are included).

Hopefully this will be included in the future.
In the past I’ve seen good stuff that eventually didn’t land in stables releases, so fingers crossed !

Anyone aware of a M4L device that creates midi Logic gates (AND, NAND, XOR etc.) from several midi streams/channels in Live? would be amazingly helpful in a generative and compositional context but can’t find anything so far.

X-relay from Manifest Audio goes some of the way there.

I had those Philip Meyer devices in my cart a few times but never actually ran it through, glad to see Ableton helping out with that. Think there are still a few that are on gum road but not the live pack though.

modpack by darkinteger has a logic module that does all types of boolean logic. the whole pack is absolutely great, and perfect for generative composition. i use it a lot.

these look helpful- thanks.

And only €15! If this is what it looks like, that’s a bargain…

Any idea whether this would work on Push 3 Standalone?

For operator’s 20th anniversary Robert Henke did a write up about the creation and some of the ethos behind, what I believe to be, abletons single most valuable instrument it has ever made. There is a pack of presets he made for it at the bottom of the article as well which I am sure will be interesting to go through and see how he uses it.

Operator is still beautifully simple and complex, one of those rare examples of FM synthesis made very usable. It’s by far my most used software instrument and has ended up in most of my creations :black_heart:

This is the best way, hands down. It’s got expression control, MIDI envelope, Beat Repeat and more. I’d never thought about using MIDI like this, just for triggering events and sending the MIDI info to another element. I’ve used interconnected LFOs across projects, but never like this. This is the way to go. I believe the ecosystem is crucial for streamlining the process and ensuring you can easily express your ideas without getting overwhelmed. When I open Reaktor, I have blocks that work seamlessly together. When I search for an oscillator, I have my list. In this instance, it employs Lives MIDI tools in a novel way to effect change over time.

This also works with Push!

Still need to check this one.

Does anybody know of any Torso TS-1 inspired or adjacent sequencers that are usable on Standalone Push? I’m thinking it’s time to put together a live techno set and this seems like a good starting point.

Nothing like the Torso t-1. I ended up buying one and I use it in a portable setup to sequence in ableton. The t-1 is very unique in how everything interacts and I was not able to find a M4L sequencer that can match it so far. A T-1 into a closed laptop running ableton could be an incredible live set.

That said, there are a lot of great M4L sequencers for techno : ML185 , MDD Snake, Sting and Rozzer are all free and increedibly good.

Interesting, although I record audio, most of my track building is done in Ableton.

I have a boss looper and an analog mixer, but that is a different story. I ditched the octatrack at the moment because i had elektron suck. I replaced it with a Digitakt.

Speaking of Rozzer, I really like it, especially on drum racks. But the skin or theme, whatever you want to call it, is broken in dark mode. Maybe someone can fix it or i might do it but i don’t understand max licensing.

Talking of FM, I had a Digitone and played with a TX81Z and liked the sound much more. The operator is also amazingly good, it always suprises me what you can get, but I think people with more experience in FM can explain this better.
