I’m using an ES-8 for audio and with CV tools, connected via USB. Works like a charm and with very little latency, at least in my use.

Is also super nice with an iPad Pro, connecting directly via usb. So nice to route things to and from AUM with FX. Should give some CV generating iPadOS apps a go too.

The inclusion of inputs on the ES-8 was a deciding factor for me. It also freed up some room where my µJack was as I don’t need that anymore.

I haven’t tried running it through the USB because I had read that the USB introduces more latency. I may be misremembering that though as Noisetrees is claiming to have little latency. FWIW, my latency is small as well, it’s just a surprise as the External Instrument used to compensate for it perfectly.

But if you don’t mind using USB, I think their FH-2 is cheaper and has more or less the same specs as the ES-8.

FH-2 is great if you only need CV control. It takes anything from laptops and tablets to digitakts/digitones to keyboards, controllers, mice and game pads. Anything class compliant. But no audio. I have them both, one in each of my cases.

I have CV Tools, and Silent Way running into a DC coupled interface. Unless I’ve missed it somewhere, the CV tools clock doesn’t have an offset. With Silent Way I can (negatively?) offset the clock via the latency value (11.3ms) in Ableton to get this it all aligned.

I’m new to Ableton so may have missed something in the setting (track delay etc) that might help.

Does any one have recommendations for their favorite Ableton computer keyboard rubber/silicone overlays?

I’m on PC but using a standard Apple Magic keyboard (with Magic Utilities thanks to a recommendation in the windows thread from @disquiet). Currently I have command/alt remapped to match my old keyboard, but I’m thinking about returning to the default Mac arrangement and forcing myself to learn the new muscle memory in conjunction w ableton muscle memory…

Other than adding project-specific keybindings, I just learn the defaults since it lets me jump on any typical setup anywhere and be rapidly productive.

Sorry to be clear - I meant one of those rubber/silicone overlays you physically place over your keyboard to help learn all the shortcuts etc

Ah. That clears things up. I think i’m sold on the ES-8.

Thanks, @Noisetrees @Whinger !!

New livecoding ‘thing’ for Ableton Live, looks pretty radical:

It’s pretty cool ! Looks like a more directly live coding oriented take on the idea behind Clyphx, I love these things.

Hello
Does any one here know of any software tool, Max4Live or other plugin compatible with Ableton that would allow me to feed audio into the DAW and then convert the pitch information contained with that, to a CV signal ?

I’ve seen Live 10’s CV Tools but haven’t explored them fully…

if anyone has any advice that would be appreciated. thx!

you can do it with max4live with fiddle~

Tell me if I’m wrong but, there seem to be a lot, A LOT, of interest / questions relative to M4L CV tools, ES modules compatibility, to the point most if not all the last posts here talk about it. Wouldn’t it be better to have an “Ableton and CV” thread at this point?

I’m thinking seriously about getting one of these

I learned a few things from Peter Kirn’s arrangement view tutorial. In particular, some of the hover+action (eg: hover + option-scroll) actions, and z/x for zoom-in/out were really helpful. Also, being reminded about that cut/copy/duplicate time options was helpful. Yes, the URL says ‘techno’ in it, but mainly it’s just a good article on speeding up using arrangement view, and moving things between session/arrangement quickly.

Thank you. i googled but couldn’t find anything titled “fiddle~” in a Max4Live device.
i found some other Max stuff but Im not a Max user and don’t know how to use that.
Do you know if there is a standalone Max4Live thing that is this fiddle or does what ive described? that would be really helpful.
cheers

Careful. The layout doesn’t seem to reflect the 10.1 streamlined shortcuts (W / H for zooms, A for Automation etc.).

This Helmholtz m4l device looks like it might work for you
http://deltasoundlabs.com/products/beta
You would just need to map the Helmholtz output to the CV Utility device.

fiddle~ and sigmund~ are the max objects you’d use to make something like this in Max for Live.

The Helmholz device looks like it uses its own custom external (no info on the website, and the patch is definitely not set up to be easy to understand by other people), so I can’t speak to what it uses under the hood.

One could hypothetically take the CV Envelope Follower patch from CV Tools and modify it to use fiddle or sigmund to make a CV Pitch Follower

bonk~ would also be a good one to look at if you want transient detection (i.e. send a gate high whenever there’s a new note played)
