Just found another way here:
https://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?t=115570

  • Slice to single sampler
  • Open up the Zone tab and select all Zones
  • Right Click -> Crop Sample
  • all Slices are chopped and put in your Project/Samples/Crop Folder
  • Batch Rename

Testing…

Oh nice. That’s tricky.

I love these kind of super utilitarian / pragmatic tricks. I found them over time to be much more regularly useful to my creative process than most of the other strategies and rules often deemed super useful.

I totally know what you mean. And in this case there’s something more enabling about having a set of files in a folder than a session with a single file loaded into sampler… oddly. But I love that sound of different sized slices looping that you get in drumrack from this method - some interesting micro rhythms come from it. Going to load these in polybuffer~ and play with groove~ in max.

Yep that’s the method

https://www.ableton.com/en/manual/live-keyboard-shortcuts/

even if you think you know everything, it’s worth checking out the keyboard shortcuts list from time to time. i have just discovered that this program i’ve used for most of my music writing life has shift+space to resume playback from where it was stopped rather than where the playhead is set to.

nearly 10 years of accidentally starting playback from the wrong point because i never read the manual. a creeping sense of dread

I’ve been using Ableton since at least 2005 if not longer and am embarrassed to say that I have never read the manual…

It’s time to crack it open starting at the beginning!

Thank you. I am… working on accepting myself for not knowing this until now.

one of my new fav ableton youtube channels. lots of cool tips/inspo in a no-nonsense format. his tracks are really nice too (i love mr bill videos but am not so much into that type of music)

Really glad you posted these!

The Kiasmos records are so great, definitely worth checking out for those who haven’t heard them.

i use geosonics for this idea

whoa that’s a cool looking plugin! might have to check that out

couple ableton questions to see if anyone has figured out ways to fix these things (kind of opposite things)

  1. is there a way to stop the transport but record tails? (maybe this is only possible by having stuff set up in session and stopping the midi clips causing sound to be generated but keeping the global transport running)?
  2. is there a way to stop any delay or reverb tails ringing out after stopping the transport so you can restart immediately without having the tails interfere?

  1. I don’t believe there’s a way to record without the transport running. Letting tails run out before hitting stop is the only solution I’ve found — would love for this to be a thing, though.

  2. Hitting stop twice should quiet all effect tails, and a quick stop-stop-play should get you the result you’re after.

Interesting, I feel like this used to work a long long time ago but it doesn’t for me now…I thought maybe I was imagining it ever did. Maybe it’s a setting

EDIT: yeah doesn’t work for me…I can’t find a setting either.

Often with stuff like this you have to toggle the channel/return on and off. Different VST seem to behave differently. If the channel doesn’t work you can toggle the device on and off with the button in the upper left hand corner.

Edit: I work with a lot of reverb and delays that can ring out for multiple minutes…

ah toggling the device is a good idea. my way was to turn the feedback down, and then wait for it to stop then revert the envelope/value…last time i was mixing with echo i just had the thought ā€œthere’s gotta be a better way than this!ā€ hence my question here

If you’re feeling really frisky you can map the toggle button to a pad on your desk you can rage press.

I’m working on creating a sample pack created entirely with eurorack and my 0-coast. This is mostly a tool for me to force myself to really learn each module with some depth. While this has been largely successful, I’m struggling a bit with the workflow in ableton. While I get that Ableton is REALLY good for making tracks, I feel like it’s a bit clunky for just making samples to save for later.

Any tips for recording and actually making the samples in Ableton? I know my way around Ableton, but I’ve never really tried to create a sample pack before and my workflow doesn’t seem the most convenient to creating a bunch of new audio clips. I’m trying to avoid any significant audio processing, but I do want to have them trimmed correctly, and at similar volumes (can’t seem to figure out how to normalize to -1db directly). Any tips or things you like in sample packs you use would be greatly appreciated.
