Anyone know of a UK source for a US-layout compact keyboard suitable for the Teletype?

It seems Really Hard to get US-layout ones here :frowning:

I should have ordered an official one when I bought a Crow a while back, but didn’t realise US layout ones keyboards where so hard to find here.

UPDATE:

I found this one:

It’s not quite as nice as the one linked above, but should do the job, I guess.

Which keys don’t work on a UK layout? I know $ is used (for script op shortcuts) and @ (turtle ops) but I would still expect these to work, just with different key placement for the keys that send those keycodes.

Having issues as in it’s completely unresponsive? Or missing keystrokes or the like? There have been some code tweaks here and there to support different types of keyboards, I’m not too well versed in the details though.

Hi @csboling you can get all the characters- it’s just that the labels on a lot of the symbol keys of a UK-layout keyboard don’t correspond to what appears on the Teletype screen when you press them.

Teletype is complicated enough, without also having to remember which keys to substitute with which others…

I’m sure it’s possible to tweak and rebuild the firmware with a different mapping, but that would likely mean doing the same for every update release in the future, which would be a pain.

I used these guys and bought the vortex core keyboard - definitely takes some getting used to, but then again so does the teletype! (but most importantly, it’s preeetttyyy)

Edit: And the keyboard itself is programmable. Mine came with the default US-mapping, which corresponds to what’s printed on the keys, but you can change what keycodes it sends yourself, if you’re so inclined.

Sorry to say I had some trouble with a QMK-based keyboard a few months ago as well. I didn’t really have time to fully troubleshoot, now I mostly use a non-QMK keyboard with Teletype – but IIRC, I had the most trouble with tap-hold keys, and I was able to make some improvements (before ultimately giving up) by fiddling with TAPPING_TERM and TAP_CODE_DELAY.

I still think there’s gotta be a way to get it working reliably – QMK is so configurable, it must be possible to find the right settings.

Thanks for confirmation on that! I can keep poking at this to see why it may be failing. I was getting key repeats and outright ignoring keypresses. Weird. Unfortunately, all I have are QMK boards right now (if you don’t count my AEK II with the ADB converter).

That one doesn’t seem to have an Function keys, which I think are quite useful for the Teletype.

Looks kinda nice though (and I think you can get alternative keys for it, can’t you, which is kinda cool).

These ones look OK, too, I think:

Penclic do lovely low-profile mini keyboards, too, but sadly they all have builtin USB hubs.

Just received this from Monoprice. Intended for work use but of course I tested it with the TT and the QWERTY side works! Verdict is still out on the number pad - I might be missing something (certain keys do… things… and others don’t).

Any recommend wireless options besides the large Microsoft one or the tiny Riitek Rii? Just looking for something compact that isn’t tethered by a cable.

I wonder about the power overhead of the Bluetooth dongle required to make a wireless keyboard work.

I may be worrying unnecessarily, though.

Also, can generic Bluetooth dongles be used with wireless keyboards that don’t ship with them? There are a couple of Bluetooth keyboards I quite like, on an aesthetic level.

It doesn’t have actual function keys, no - you just have to press a modifier button on the right, and you get access to the numbers & Fn1-12

I would think the typical eurorack power supply probably loses more energy in voltage conversion and heat dissipation than a bluetooth dongle utilizes.

I just ordered a Teletype and while I can’t wait for it to arrive, I started to do some research on mechanical keyboards to use with the Teletype. It seems there are many great (small sized) options – however I realized, that for the special use case of having the keyboard directly in front of the modular case, it would be best to have the USB cable not sticking out on the back, but to the side … it seems, suddenly there aren’t much options left, or at least I can’t find them.

Does anyone know a great mechanical keyboard with the cable on the side?
(I was looking for something in the direction of the Vortex Core)

thanks for the tip. order placed. i too had a hard time finding something with an english layout of keys (located in sweden).

Np, it can’t compete with the more expensive options in sense of style but really happy with mine, feels great to type on

thinking i’m probably looking down a brand new rabbit hole after browsing online for nice mechanical keyboards. so many options and they can really shine!

Interesting that QMK may be a factor here. My teletype was delivered just a couple days ago (woo!) and I’ve noticed repeats occasionally on my Planck EZ — but only numbers and brackets (which are in other layers). I have LEDs off in the main layer, but they still light on other layers. I don’t see repeated keys with that keyboard in other sources. I’m expecting a Preonic in a couple weeks, with a discrete number row and no LED; that should give me an example of QMK but no need for layers for numbers and no fluctuating draw toggling between lights and not. Will report back!

I’ve solved this problem by using a small right-angle cable like this. It works okay for my purposes, definitely better than a straight cable out the back. It still creates about 1/4” to 1/3” gap, so it couldn’t sit flush against the case if that’s what you need.

It’s more addictive than eurorack, trust me.

QMK causes repeats for me too when I switch layers, still haven’t figured out why. Also teletype does not like the numpad QMK keycodes for some reason e.g. KC_P1 but is fine with the “normal” number keycodes. Besides that, you should be good!
