ha ha - a conversation. On the internet. Staying on topic? seems a bit unlikely

Totally agree with your stance though and limitation can be a real spur for creativity and PD is great - I used it for years (still some of my externals kicking around in one of the libraries too). One thing I keep meaning to look at (and this is still money) is Raspberry pi with a touch screen. It’s a real shame the DAC on the rPi is so crap otherwise it would be even more useful

Its doable in the most parts of the world if you want it.

a $300 dollar tablet, for making sound? I’m pretty surprised at that very sweeping statement. I guess we can each agree that we don’t know the circumstances of the other and leave it at that.

I have a Pi Model A that has sat in a plastic housing and never been used more than to power it on, actually, that’s definitely another one for the “work within limitations” pile!

Hexen was new to me, will have a look, cheers

Grainstorm is very cool. I will check out some of these others. I don’t find myself using the phone for music much but there are a handfull of synth apps I’ve pulled out in the past. Synprez FM is a nice DX7 style synth. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.synprez.fm&hl=en_US

I like, and use, FL mobile. Good for messing about on the train (those were the days) before sticking patterns into fl studio.

Kaossilator was free for a while and enjoyable.

FakeSID was surprisingly nice also.

Chordbot is super handy for generating midi progressions to send to a daw.

Sunvox developer has also made PIXITRACKER which has 8bit and 1bit versions. Superintuitive and sound great.

Also just decided to investigate the app store.

Beatonal (pretty much a beefed up copy of that propellerhead iPhone app from a few years ago) and Loopify look interesting so dow loading them both at the moment.

I don’t know if it’s already live but I remember reading somewhere that the developer of Koala Sampler was working on an Android Version.

That app is truly great

I once read that the biggest problem with developing audio software for Android was the sheer number of different models of phone with varying specs, and then the varying OS’s on said devices. This made for a porting nightmare. Where as Apple puts out, maybe 2 new phones a year and one standard OS.

yeah, the saddest thing isn’t even the latency per se, but the lack of solution to bring all these apps under one umbrella.

There are many excellent apps that aren’t au though. Some of them are indispensable. I would never give up drumjam, Animoog, nave, etc.

This project has some crowd sourced latency numbers for various iOS and Android devices. It might be helpful in working out if it’s worth putting time into setting up a specific device.

Regardless of platform an audio recorder on your phone is a must have in my opinion.
Recording petrol generator drones, birdsong and many other found sounds has helped me to blur the line between studio and nature/exercise.

That said I have an android and comparatively IOS looks far better for music apps.

Animoog is au. For me its just a workflow thing - I’d rather have everything in one central app like aum.

I wish Animoog were AU, but you’re thinking of model 15 and model d, which are indeed au. I can still load the non-au apps in AUM. It’s not a problem. You’re just limited to one instance without state saving. But they work fine.

@ruaridhTVO I don’t do a lot on Android lately, mostly because I’ve been more focused on guitar practice and my modular, but these are some apps I keep on my phone, currently a Pixel 2XL, for moments when my phone is all I’ve got with me.

Koala
Grainstorm
Hexen
Pocket Composer
Saucillator
AudioStretch
SNAP
Dragon
Caustic
DRC - Polyphonic Synthesizer
HostSample
Lexis Audio Editor
Easy Voice Recorder
S.A.M.M.I.
Loopify (Beta)

Ooh, thanks. Please keep the recommendations coming. It will be awhile before I’m stuck again on public transportation, but I’d like my phone loaded in advance.
