I just discovered this other, narrower thread focusing on composing with bird song.

Maybe a weird thread, but this is the only place where I feel I might get interesting replies… Has anyone composed music with songbirds (finches, canaries, cockatiels, etc) before, or know of anything of the sort? I’ll be moving to a new place soon and have been wanting a fun pet to keep. I’ve kept a varieties of things in the past (cats, aquariums, a mouse) but never birds - and it struck me that not only are they cute, but they also like to make music, just like me! The awesome RWM MACBA has this awesome serie called PROBES with Chris Cutler. The new episode 29 is all about animals, with a bit of plants and stones.

In PROBES #29 composers turn to nature, not as pastorale but as concrete musical resources. Chris Cutler looks at animals, vegetables and one or two minerals as they are directly incorporated into musical works, as leading voices: there are birds, wolves and whales, obviously, but also less cuddly creatures, plants, cacti, rocks and stones. We also consider some of the motives and ideologies at work, and hear minerals make sounds that are hard to credit.

Thanks for sharing! I was just about to post about Weddel Seals which Alexander Liebermann had a post about in February. They make some of my favorite animal sounds.

My cats are my audience. When I’m playing music in my little studio corner they invariably come to join me, frequently jumping onto my back and walking down my outstretched arm as I fiddle with a patch so they can do a little fiddling of their own. They haven’t mastered knobs yet but I’m hoping they will soon…

(I have a typewriter that they also find pretty interesting and I have a strong feeling that one in particular will begin composing his novel as soon as I fit some paper in for him)

I love to dance and have had a number of nights performing dance numbers for my cats. Occassionally they will join in, wriggling on the floor in a way I only see when I’m boogeying. Other times they just sit and stare.

They’re pretty young cats, about six months old. They sit and listen to me make music all the time, and as I’m quite new to modular (two-ish months) they really have felt like my little learning companions.

I just learned that serinette was a instrument French aristocrats used to train melodies to canaries in 18th and 20th century.

I was joined with a vocalist for January this year.

There was no interaction actually and I just sampled them, so not so interesting.

William Edward Jackson III (born February 13, 1945) served with Greenpeace in its early years (1975–77), as crew member on the first anti-whaling expedition, and as cofounder of Greenpeace San Francisco (the first GP chapter after Vancouver, BC). A pioneer synthesizer player (Serge, Buchla, Moog), Jackson was aboard the Greenpeace V as part of the media campaign to demonstrate whale intelligence, and to disrupt Russian whaling. Jackson played a large modular synthesizer that had been brought onboard, broadcast through underwater speakers, with the intention of communicating with whales through synthesized whale song. He was one of six persons out of a rotating pool of 35 to remain aboard throughout the expedition. Bob Hunter, co-founder and first president of Greenpeace, credits Jackson with saving him from drowning at Triangle Island.

we had a cat that loved typewriters and we did just this. Murphy’s novel (more of a short story) is around here somewhere, it’s pretty abstract.

Very enjoyable thread.
I’ve been toying with an idea for a norns script based on bird songs, when I’ll get way more confident with using Lua. In the mean time, and I know it’s a long shot but, does anyone suggest any good books/studies on European garden bird songs? Might be a good read for the summer.
