agreed! I’ve heard whispers of a global clock module coming at some point. I imagine that will help to standardize things a bit

global clock would be unreal! hope it happens soon.

Had a go yesterday, so great with the added functionality! Thanks again @crim!

Just discovered this. Amazing! Excellent work on it. I’m having trouble understanding how snapshots work. It seems like every time I press a snapshot pad it clears the sequence?

Thanks! I’m glad you’re enjoying it.

That definitely shouldn’t be the case, unless I’ve introduced a bug recently… I can double check later.

When you press a snapshot button, it should store the current sequence in that pad (along with clock division and “intersect” settings), unless you have already stored a snapshot with that pad, in which case it will start playing back that snapshot. If you hold the 5th pad below the snapshots and press a snapshot it will clear the snapshot.

Is it possible you pressed the snapshot button before you created any sequences, so you essentially stored an “empty” snapshot? If you did this, when you pressed that button again it would appear to clear the sequence.

The workflow is basically supposed to be like this:

  1. create a sequence
  2. press snapshot pad to store sequence
  3. modify your sequence
  4. press another snapshot pad to store that sequence
  5. toggle between your sequences using aforementioned snapshot pads

Okay, got it now! You’re probably right about me saving empty snapshots. Thanks so much for the explanation. Love this!

small recording i made with animator! audio + cv + jf mode with three sisters and serge vcfq doing some slow chance sweeped filtering! love the workflow of this script, thanks for your work!

wonderful, thank you for sharing. sounds like you engaged the “slop” param near the end there

I’m very happy people are enjoying this script.

Yeah, clearly I gotta start using this with my JF more… Like, wtf!

Here’s animator driving JF and rings via crow, heavily modulated by ochd (which I am becoming obsessed with). clocked by marbles > crow. marbles y out into ochd cv in.

Nice! I like the end section from around 2:30 especially

Hey @crim I love this sequencer, been playing with it all morning, but had the same issue as @hypnosapien though.

I have, however, found a repro for it.

For now, at least what I’m running, which is the latest Norns firmware and Animator installed yesterday, snapshots don’t save. Unless … you clear them first.

So now, I first have to clear a snapshot. Then, as I actually press it to go there for the purpose of saving my sequences, it works.

It’s possible you’ve documented this workflow, because it makes a lot of sense. It prevents me from overwriting a sequence as I bounce around, so I kind of like it. But it wasn’t obvious to me that clearing a snapshot was required before you could store something in it, so I think perhaps that might be the misconception for some. But it’s a good workflow, since it prevents accidents.

I’m loving this sequencer, by the way. It’s innovative and beatiful. I’m new to the Norns + Grid world, just exploring now, so I’m really starting to get the beauty of these kits and this sequencer really underlines it. Great work.

Thank you for the kind words!

This should only be the case if you have already saved a snapshot in that pad. In other words, the way it should work is the pad either sets the sequence to the current stored snapshot, or a creates a new snapshot if none exists. So, if you want to overwrite an existing snapshot, you do first have to clear it. If it’s not working that way then it sounds like a bug, but I can take a look later today.

I’m also open to suggestions for ways to make the snapshots more intuitive. Maybe the pads should be dimly lit if they currently have a stored snapshot.

Could be that it behaves like that as you launch it, but that behaviour doesn’t seem to consistency follow the experience as I clear out and create new snap shots.

But with your reply in mind, I’ll approach this tomorrow again and test it more thoroughly. Either way, this one’s quickly becoming one of my favourite sequencers. I like that you have a fair amount of control over the harmonics, so it’s not all that difficult to create a sequence with a musical idea in mind, but also experiment with it and see where it goes as you throw in intersecting patterns to challenge the basic idea. Lovely stuff.

thanks so much! Yes I think there are a number of ways to experiment with this sequencer for different kinds of results. Maybe one day I’ll do a walkthrough video to show some of the different ideas I’ve had.

Thinking through the snapshots, I realized I could modify the behavior slightly. If you hold clear and press a pad, it could both clear the snapshot and create a new one in its place. That way it can all be done in one gesture instead of first clearing and then creating a new one. I may push an update soon with this change.

edit: done! I’ve pushed a new update implementing the behavior described above. I also fixed an issue where if you press the snapshot pad that is currently selected again, it wasn’t doing anything. This way you can store a single snapshot, make a bunch of changes, and press that pad again to “reset” back to previous state.

Oh, man. You da boss.

I’m updating today and will try this and get back to you with feedback. You rule.

Love how the snapshots work now! Much more intuitive and performative. Excellent work.

You don’t have an arc by chance, do you? I can imagine fun arc integration for controlling lfo speed, note length, transpose, etc.

This update is a huge improvement, @crim work of wonder here, for sure.

Not only does storing feel a lot more intuitive now, like @hypnosapien said, but I’m also finding live scenarios now. I can store a snapshot, then go bonkers with it and then just push the snapshot again without the clear button, and it resets to its original state. It’ll be great to use this for improvisation while recording.

I don’t have an arc yet, no. I’ve been eyeing it for awhile but haven’t felt like spending the money just yet… That’s a great idea though!

I’d happily except a pull request… There’s also arcify which could make it pretty easy to add arc support.
