Been following this thread carefully but feeling a bit lost here in the end. I use a MB Air 2013 which still works fine but projects starting to shift into more processor heavy stuff, mostly audio (Logic) but also video (Premiere). Using a good ol’ RME Fireface with Thunderbolt adapter which have been working absolutely perfect. Leaning towards a MB Pro 2.3GHz Quad-Core for future proof but getting a bit unsure now with all the reported issues. as @equipoise mentions above:

I guess this should not be an issue for firewire>thunderbolt>thunderbolt 3? (but the adapter frenziness makes me even more reluctant…)

I’ve got not proper question here to be honest, just a contemplation on how difficult it has become to purchase a new Mac - it used to be so easy…

Well, again, I want to be clear: the USB issue is a temporary software bug that Apple is clearly working to resolve. It should not factor into your decision, in my opinion, AT ALL unless it’s a showstopper for you right now and you only care about it in the short term. And it would only be a showstopper if you refuse to purchase the CalDigit dock in the meantime, since that fixes it for Macbook Pros definitively. So anybody who is taking drastic action or worrying because of the USB issue is, to me, barking up a tree that may not be standing for very much longer, if it’s still standing at all after the update that came out today.

As for Firewire, I don’t have TB3 to verify, but some people report issues, others report none at all. I have an FW800 which I’m running via ADAT and SPDIF into my UCX, so it’s retained a huge amount of value to me given that it’s more than doubled my analog port count for effectively free. It also works just fine over TB2->FW using Apple’s firewire adapter, and I use that to reprogram it in the odd situation I want to switch to the front ports or something.

I’ve had a FW converter fail in the past, and cables make a lot of difference - cables are a wear item, especially FW cables, since a part of their spec and tolerance is the spacing, twisting, and other physical cable properties. If you use a cable too much and/or it was marginal to begin with, it can start causing dropout-like problems. So can the adapters which have exhibited the possibility of randomly dying early in their lifetime. So my guess is that those with issues are likely experiencing the marginal aspects of FW in general, especially through these adapters and maybe old cables, and not necessarily any fault of TB3 itself. But again, it’s a guess. TB3 is more or less just encapsulated PCI, just like TB2, so I cannot see any serious compatibility issues arising there for FW.

However, if you’re really concerned, what I’d do is call the local Apple store, express your concern, and ask if you can trot your gear over sometime. They’ll want you to speak with a business rep or a pro audio rep. Decline their attempts to sell you “lessons” or “pro time” or whatever, and just say you want to make sure it’s compatible with the new devices and ask if they’ll loan you, while in-store, a TB3->TB2 adapter so you can plug your TB2->Firewire dongle in. Try it out on a new Mac with Logic Pro (they’ve always got at least one or two powerful new macbooks and iMacs loaded with that in-store) and see if you get any dropouts. Easy way to verify is just to use a premade loop of some kind that comes with Logic. Bring a couple TRS cables and physically loopback your inputs to your outputs. Play the loops on tracks that output to your hardware’s outs, and re-record the loops on the inputs. If the re-recording is glitch-free, then the audio chain will be. From most reports I’ve read, the glitches are both frequent and non-subtle for FW related issues, so that should give you a high degree of confidence right there.

I have a 15” top of the line 2016 touchbar MacBook Pro. Great machine. I scoffed at my coworkers who swore about keyboard problems.
A year later, the missing key presses started emerging. They were subtle, and I didn’t realize I was typing my long pasphrases wrong into my banking sites. You know, the passwords you don’t even trust your password manager to keep track of. Cue being locked out of multiple bank accounts. Being paranoid. Then realizing your keyboard SUCKS.
I was in a jam. Couldn’t send my laptop off to get repaired, because I needed it. Talked my company into a 13” 2018 MBP retina. All was good, until…
45 days into the new laptop, the spacebar starts phantom key presses.

Now I have two laptops to send in. I might grab a Dell Latitude 7490 off the office parts shelf and find out if it likes Linux. I love apple, but these keyboards are horrible.

First world problems, for sure, but I just want it all to work.

Figured I’d report back about this – went ahead with a new Mac mini after I read that the Mojave update fixed the audio woes. It’s been working well with my old MOTU 828 Mk3 firewire. Having to use 2 adapters is a little silly, but I already had one of them and I really didn’t want to have to buy a new interface. MOTU seems to support their hardware forever.

If I recall correctly, Firewire and USB3 devices weren’t impacted with the bug. Only USB2 devices.

That was the initial impression, but if you read every single comment in the CDM article (which I obsessively did, lol), there were reports of issues beyond just USB2.

I was very cautious about making any decisions until the resolution of the USB2 bug. Happy to say that I haven’t had any problems. From what I can tell, everything is patched up.

I’ve got two 13 inch 2009 MBP’s here that are in daily use. One does Max 7 duties while the other is my internet/email machine. Great little devices and still very capable. I’m hoping mine can continue a fair bit past the 10 year mark.

I got a top of the line 15” MacBook Pro about 4-5 months ago. And so far it’s been smooth sailing. I use it in work(movie/tv post-production) and I think it is an absolute joy to work with compared to my old 13” 2012 MacBook Pro. And I kinda like the touchbar…

Does anybody know where to find replacement fans for a 2010 Mac Pro? At least one is starting to get a bit noisy.

Not got a great solution sadly but am in the same situation at the moment with my macbook pro, infuriating as I can’t do even basic admin work in quiet shared spaces anymore. You’ve opened it up and checked it isn’t clogged with dirt, right?

ifixit.com sell replacement fan kits for most Macbook Pro and iMac models (sadly not the Mac Pro). They include tools and full instructions and are simple to follow even for a novice. I highly recommend them, and their tools are top notch, not some crappy extra they tossed in.

Any updates with the Macbook Pros (T2) and the USB2 audio dropout issues? I sold my Motu Ultralite Mk4 because of this, but I want it back. Everything was finde for me but the damn dropouts. I didn’t want to spend that much money on a TB hub… seemed silly to me.
