As far as I know this hasn’t changed. The surest way to address it is still some kind of additional USB hub. The issue seems to be contained to USB2 only which I expect you’d agree gives Apple no incentive to try and address it at all, since there’s USB3 and Thunderbolt and them wanting us users to move in that direction is consistent with past Apple behaviour.

Since the big update a few months ago it’s been working well (as far as I can tell). They’ve also done another update that has supposed to help beyond that too.

I’ve only used my USB2-based interfaces live though, so it’s possible I’ve missed minor dropouts or something, but the huge issues of it completely locking up and blasting super loud white noise is gone…

(on a different note, on my last keyboard repair (5th or 6th at this point?) they replaced my keyboard with the latest gen that was redesigned one more time and I’m getting sticky keys again after a couple of months…)

Well this sound like good news with the USB2 issues. Your keyboard problems seem to be a never ending tragic story poor mate! Hope things keep working out fine with further replacement(s).

Heh, tell me about it.

I’m presently looking at booking in my 2nd top case replacement for this machine. Once it hits 3 they offer you a new machine. With any luck that will happen after the next models come out. Fingers crossed…

(I do urge anyone who has keyboard problems to take them in for replacements, as even though its a pain being without a computer for a few days, they can replacement the machine after 3 repairs, and that generally means with the current gen equivalent)

Hi,
Has anyone ever encountered this issue with an IMac ? (See photos please)

Suddenly some random greenish vertical lines appeared over a black screen, not completely black, I can see some kind of « ghost » apps printed on the screen.

Do you think it’s the graphic card ? The screen itself ? Or the motherboard ? Or something else ? The thunderbolt ports are already dead on this 2012 iMac 27 so I planned to have the motherboard replaced (not done by Apple but some other unofficial store in Paris) but I’m in the middle of a project, that’s problematic.

I tried a SMC and PRAM reset but that doesn’t work. It happened twice today, first time it came back to semi-normal (still some vertical lines in the middle of the screen and a strange contrast/luminosity) after 5 minutes, the second time it lasted much longer. Next time this happens… :disappointed_relieved::fearful:

Thanks :pray:t2:

That’s almost certainly a cooked GPU = I believe those were soldered to the logic board anyhow so if you already needed the logic board replaced, now would be a good time to do it.

Oh, thanks for for your reply  I will contact this unofficial Apple shop and see if they can repair it, if they still have some spare boards for this model. When I bought this Mac I took the best specs (CPU, fusion drive etc), it would be sad to throw it away only because of the GPU.

If that’s a 2012 and you spent extra on the best-available GPU at the time, there is a chance that it is NOT soldered to the logic board in that case, since it’s a separate discrete card. Best of luck!

Good to know ! Fingers crossed :crossed_fingers: Thanks for your help

I would try attaching an external display, to narrow down if it is a problem with the motherboard / GPU or the build-in display?

Yeah that would be a good test but unfortunately the Thunderbolt ports are dead since 2017 and there are only three USB, 2 thunderbolt and one Ethernet on this imac

Re: T2 Chip breaking USB Audio,

Rather than reward Apple’s disloyalty to the pro audio community by purchasing a new i5 Mac mini, I decided to spend just about the same amount of money on a 2015 i7 27" iMac, 3rd party refurbished. 32GB+1TB SSD. It benchmark’s maybe 5% slower than the i5 6-core, but comes with a 5k display.
Not too difficult of a decision.

I really hope it isn’t the last Mac I buy.

just a note about me and my mid 2009 MBP 15":

about a month ago it hit a major grind, got warnings about the internal drive, 128gb SSD. swapped that out for a 256gb from crucial, everything is a little bit better than it was. very few orig parts left on this (had the screen swapped a few years back), but I have not the need for something new, much less the funds.

insanely tickled that this thing is gonna break the 10 year mark.

Today is the day, Catalina has been released. There are a few specific reasons I would like to update to the new OS, but I am curious if anybody has done so already and would be willing to take compatability questions. I don’t use TOO much stuff that I am worried will break besides my version of Ableton Live (10.2) and some of my VST/AU’s (NI stuff, which I’ve heard could break). That’s also not to mention anything involving the Grid working.

I guess the majority of my music has been using VCV Rack currently, so, knowing if all that is intact would be nice too.

So, long story short, anybody updated? And if so, how has the experience been in regards to the wild world of Music Making Apps?

Given what a big change this is, I won’t be doing so for a long while (potentially never on my studio computer) since it breaks all sorts of things.

If you want to check your applications, you can follow these instructions:

I don’t know if that finds every library dependency for the apps, so it’s possible more stuff will break than what’s shown in System Information.

At minimum none of the drivers for my soundcards are fully 64bit, so that’s a big deal breaker just there. I also wonder if some of my older hardware (MOTU Traveller mk1) will get a driver update at all, in which case, that computer will never be updated past Mojave.

Thankfully I don’t have too many big dependencies beyond that, as I tend to go quite lean on the software I incorporate into my workflow. Other than the drivers, I’m a bit concerned about Shlisp/Fish, since I see “shlisp” in my list of 32bit apps.

I’m concerned about this too in regards to MOTU. The Cuemix software is due for an update. It works alright on Mojave although it has issues when my computer goes to sleep.

Looking at this, it does appear that Fetch would be the only thing I’m losing (can’t believe I didn’t go with CyberDuck when getting my SFTP ). Beyond that, I keep my music making really sparse in regards to “extraneous” plugins and such. Really one of the reasons I love the norns so much.

But there are some aspects of the new firmware that appeal to me, mainly SideCar.

Catalina is an operating system, not a firmware.

Yes, apologies for that simple mistake. I am aware of that. Edit will be made to make sure the post is 100% accurate in its assertions and references.

if you want to try out Catalina, you can also use disk utility to add an APFS volume and install it from a USB drive.

then you’ll see what’s broken or not, and keep it warm for when it’s ready.

edit: and if like me you have an old mbp, you can use this patch: http://dosdude1.com/catalina/
