Thanks @mdg - encouraged me to actually finish something…

A previously granulated music box recording run through the modular, really to try to get a grip on the Echophon. The original sound was granulated in Max, I think from an adaptation of one of the patches in the Electronic Music and Sound Design second book.

I’m interested in this approach of not panning anything, but bouncing out mono stems, panning them in the final mix and letting the fluctuations create movements. This is several feeds from the Echophon mixed together. I love the sound of it latching to a change in clock.

yah! this is really beautiful.

Totally agree with you re: spatialization - sometimes the composite of several sources can be more interesting than the ol’ ‘Pink Floyd stereo ping pong’. Are you into Mark Fell’s work at all? Feel like he’s done a lot of multichannel things keeping to the ‘one speaker - one sound’ vibe.

Nothing fancy, but here’s a little proof on concept using a Roli Block + DC from a MOTU to control my eurorack (still very basic at this point)

And here’s a conceptually rich, practice-poor instance of me using Max to generate timed triggers and voltage from a recording of myself playing guitar (etude one on the link is the guitar, ‘trace 1 and 2’ are the eurorack, meant to be played simultaniously in quad lol

Yes I do know and like Mark Fell’s work, especially multistability.

I’ve been having somewhat similar issues with a MacBook Air. (Using an aggregate device with an ES-8 and the built-in output) For me at least the aggregate device is always recognized by Max, but just as you described, no audio will pass. For some reason Max’s audio I/O mappings reset to default every time it’s closed. Resetting them manually at startup fixes the issue at the cost of a recurrent annoyance.

I just had the time to go through your recording — really love the feel of its ambiance and spatialization.

I’ve just abandoned the aggregate option.

I’m currently running 7 outs into the modular (3 x audio, 4 x CV) then bringing 4 feeds from that back into Max through the ES8s 4 ins. I then mix / mangle that more in Max and send a mono out (lowered in level) through the remaining ES8 output for monitoring.

I’m recording everything using multichannel files in sfrecord~ for chopping up and mixing later - all working great.

Feels like there’s loads of scope in that setup, and it feels like a workflow of sorts…

Interesting to discuss routing.

My 4 ins:

  1. CV in to control my MAX patch timing
  2. Dry audio in L
  3. Dry audio in R
  4. Sends to my granular sampler/spectral filter in the MAX patch

My 8 outs:

  1. L out (main output)
  2. R out (main output)
  3. < unassigned - quad eventually? >

James Holden seems to have the same workflow, he mentions it in that interview, you can dig up on that side. Already talked to him via Facebook, so he’s quite available for tech questioning :slight_smile:

It’s an interesting topic to me as I’m slowly learning Max and have a few ideas i’d like to try combining it with my small eurorack, but I can’t afford an ES-8 right now and I’m also a bit reluctant to the aggregate audio device thing, I used it before for other projects with various success.

A few days ago a friend just told me about this arduino CV/Gate I/O shield called Synapse and he sent me a PCB to build one.

It features 2 CVs in (0-5v) 2 CVs out (-5/+5v or 0-10v) and 2 gates in & out.
I’m gonna build one and try to use it as an interface for Max , i’ll report back if it’s working :slight_smile:

This looks great. my only point is that with a Eurorack power, you would need to power this from your rack, as opposed to it being standalone?

I’d rather this was a little self contained box that could be used with various gear…

Yes that is the main downside, if it works for what I have in mind i’ll put it in a standalone box (or mini-skiff with a few modules) with a DC-DC converter to power it from 5V.
I still have to order a few missing ICs & headers then I’ll be ready to build it.

Max + modular is extremely interesting. I’ve been starting to experiment with Max, but only as a controller/composing tool. My initial attempts were using the Endorphin Shuttle Control. Very flexible, but I struggled to eliminate latency problems. Since then I have switched to using the Polyend Poly as the primary Max/DAW to modular interface.

The module is physically large, but simpler to use. The Poly was immediately recognized by Max. Here’s a quick sketch using a simple probability patch/sequencer from Max to multiple voices in the modular.

This video is incredibly cool. I really wish I could watch the whole thing. Anyone have any ideas where or how one could?

So many cool topics here. The idea of setting up a live performance instrument that strikes the balance between improvisation and “playing the hits”, building a hybrid modular // computer setup and that amazing karplus-strong physical modeling feedback patch. all these things have been the center of my focus for the last few months so clearly I was thrilled when I came across this video.

is that max he’s using? what is that spring he’s using to excite the karplus-strong engine? at first i thought it may be meng qi’s lines module but at second glance it looks like its a single spring as opposed to 4. anyway, figured i’d share.

Yes he has built his own devices. Spoke to him a couple of times last summer. He’s got some complex stuff going on. Hope he eventually shares some of his max patches.
