yo! i use earballs all the damn time!!
i.e. “lemme play this for your earballs” or “got a mix for your earballs, listen up”

its a very delicate technical term

Norns is…

Norns is two mirrors, aligned just so.

Now an infinite series of reflections.

Now a glimpse at something over there

Norns is the smell after it rained.
It’s the oil barrel in my dream last night.
It’s Rothko’s No. 10,
and Rothko’s No. 10 is my dog.
Norns is my dog.
Good boy.

Norns is always a new thing.

norns is me
norns is you
norns is us

i really dont want to be greedy, because already with the currently known feature set, norns is a must buy. mlr confirmed, many more apps to come, what’s not to like?
but the absolute killer app for me would be to have some version of the party van running on this thing.
paging @rodrigo

You and me both!

Though I see myself probably making several smaller setups for it (a mini Cut Glove, C-C-Combine etc…). At the moment I’m working on taming some of the CPU usage of TPV2 so it runs more smoothly on my maxed out laptop, so some of the heavy lifting will probably be relegated to a computer computer, but I’ll see once I get my hands on one.

On a separate note, however, does anyone know of a (rechargeable) battery powered, decent quality phantom preamp?

From the looks of it this is just 1/4" in, so I’d want to have something that’s compact/portable but will allow me to plug a mic into it for live sampling and such.

Obviously could have a mixer, or a full on pre-amp, but that defeats the elegance of having such a compact setup (norns).

What is that, over there?

Spins around to face a massive floating Earball, tendrils splapping along the floor.

It is NORN, woken from her terrible slumber!

We are doomed.

Actually, when I saw this video, one of my first thoughts was, I wonder what @tehn was putting that condenser mic through to get a 1/4" line out, as whatever it is, I think it’s off camera. Obviously my other thoughts were how amazing this box looks!

Yes, it’s kind of THE question, for every mic driven setup.

4 posts were split to a new topic: Friendly Pre-Amp Options

My speculation is that the / are following sample playback…or indicating sample length

could it be possible he’s using the onboard mic on the op-1?

I don’t think so, op-1 onboard mic has its limitations… and I believe he’s just using the op-1 for the subtle droney sounds

Totally off topic, but about rhizome…
I recently started an art platform with that concept and name (in Dutch). See more info here: https://rizoom.art/

I think it’s an interesting topic for a new thread. I expect many of lines users will resonate with the rhizome concept formulated by Delueze and Guattari.

I like the concept of decentralised curation…:grinning:

  • 128 x 64 OLED, 16-level bright white huge pixels.
  • 3 rotary encoders, standard resolution.
  • 3 keys.
  • rear status LED indicating power and disk access.

  • 4 x USB ports for devices.
  • serial tty via USB-mini.

  • power/charge via USB-mini (high output USB power supply included).
  • internal lipo battery 2250mAh.

processsing.

  • compute module 3 SoC. quad core 1.2ghz, 1gb RAM, 4gb eMMC (faster and more reliable than an sd card).
  • cs4270 i2s audio codec (low latency).

os.

  • linux with realtime kernel. (2)

yes, it’s minimalist. (3)

reducing the built-in features provides less expectation of how this machine should be used. it lets it be tiny, efficient, and less expensive.

USB brings everything together:

  • grid and arc, certainly.
  • MIDI (4), for application-specific controller layouts, CC, or just keyboard input. USB-to-MIDIplug for talking to instruments with actual MIDI ports.
  • footswitch bank.
  • HID everything: gamepads, keyboards, etc.
  • CV devices (more on this later).
  • wifi (nub is included). OSC-ready (4), so touchOSC and inter-computer conversation is easy.
  • anything you can make with a teensy or similar devboard with USB device mode.

there are several little DIY circuits i plan to build for my own performance setup (ie USB foot switch, battery-powered preamp) which i’ll add to the growing collection of open-source electronics shared by the lines community. making custom controllers creates a physical connection to custom software.

but the norns also stands on its own. as a processor/effect, as a drone machine, as a robot drummer for your jam band (or metal band).

sun’s out, it’s saturday. time to go outside.

(1) thank you trent (@galapagoose) for assistance on the analog design.
(2) huge help from simon (@simonvanderveldt), artem (@artfwo), murray (@murray), and rick (@rick_monster)!
(3) surprise!!!
(4) artem again, so much gratitude.
