Yadda yadda i havent consumed every mlr or norns vid yet or have the slightes idea abou its UI, i am thinking of building a shield but so far i am overhelmed by the norns material available and i dont know where to start looking for basics… like, is there an earthsea like sequencer?
I allready found the custom 64 mlr few posts up

I think without a 128 varibright grid you’re missing out on the majority of functionality. if you are a coder you could probably make use of an old 64 grid in many ways but overall 128 is the norm now.

I think i would limit myself to 1-2 sequencers and a handfull of sampling and synth apps to actually stay focused. Should be possible to tailor that to my grid as many apps dont even need grid?
Gosh where do i educate myself about norns besides the docs on monome.org i am reading right now. I dont even know if i can switch apps just like on the fly.

Correct not all apps need a grid. You can only run one app at a time so switching on the fly doesn’t really work. There is a ‘questions’ category now where you can post questions about all things now as well. There are certainly some very long threads with lot’s of information!

Yup! There is an Earthsea script, it’s part of @tehns Ash collection.

As a former 64 user and current updater of the 64 version of this script, I would say that your statement is not 100% correct. mlr is (thankfully) one of the scripts that works really well with a 64 grid. If you can live without the same transposing options as in the 128 version.

Agree to disagree. I was saying the overall Norns platform is definitely 128 varibright orientated.

Puuuuurfect:)

Now i need to find that basic help thread.

Btw noiserock, i wish that library page you posted about 64 apps would see more participants as theres sth really beautiful about the format, coming from a film photography background i might also be biased by the 6x6 square.

The norns works great both without a grid and with a 64 as long as you’re willing to get your hands slightly dirty. that is what makes it a great platform. Yes, most script devs write scripts for 128s, but with some creative thinking you can port almost anything.

@Hlp I agree! I will never get rid of my 64. I think it is probably the most beautiful piece of hardware I own. But I mainly use my neotrellis 128 now.

Am i naive to assume i wont need to do scripts for using norns but pick a few pieces that suit my workflow?

Still dont get if mlr or ash earthsea etc only triggering sounds inside norns or also outside (no cv right?) and if, as assumed only inside, will they work with another app by the users choice, be it polysynth or sample player or whatever?

Is there some kind of modulation network inside to kind of patch up things?
That feeling of having no clue but high interest.

guys i’m moving these posts to Norns: help Approaching:norns , which is the thread for kind of general free-ranging norns discussion/opinions. (speciifc solvable things that you need focused help with should be new threads in Questions category with norns label, but please search first.)

my 2c is that most apps are made for 128 grids because monome is only making and selling 128 grids now, it is “The Official Standard Monome Grid Layout.” i think this is a great decision, after 16 years of refinement the grid design is Done and this model is the endpoint of the evolution.

(oh crap, mod fail: i didn’t realize that Norns:help thread is actually closed. hm…)

@Hlp As a norns user with no grid what so ever, norns is totally amazing!!! There are plenty of scripts in the community library that don’t need a grid, and plenty that don’t use one at all. A great place to start looking to see what norns can do right now is to look at posts tagged norns in the library section of this forum.

(This isn’t to say that the system isn’t making me want to see how a grid could really make it shine!)

I don’t currently have a 64, but this idea sounds nice.

ok, no harm no foul and sorry for being defensive. the context is, i just pulled about 24 hours on softcut rewrites and am a bit frustrated because i want to move on to other aspects of the work, which is endless.

i just want to be clear that there is literally no reason for any of this stuff to exist except that people enjoy making it for their own use.

so yeah, i’m happy to pitch in with ideas or code help on how to ease those use cases. maybe tutorials, maybe code libraries.

I’m going to defend myself here. I never said 64’s were obsolete with Norns. I said if you code you could probably use it more.

Hi all, is there a trick to getting a USB flash drive recognized? Is there a certain limit on size? I’ve formatted a 128GB (fat32) to hold samples and the drive isn’t showing up anywhere… maybe I’m doing something wrong.

use etcher, the flashing application described in the setup docs: https://github.com/monome/norns-shield

thanks for the quick response. so i should flash a norns image to the usb and plug it into the norns?

hi everyone, just updated norns after a period of absence, and some apps don’t work because missing PolyPerc engine
maybe its stupid, but how do i install it back?

PolyPerc is the engine that comes with awake. Probably just need to reinstall awake.
