Yes that’s more or less what I’d expect. I stand corrected regarding that matter.
The import duties and extra VAT accounts for things costing more or less 1$ = 1€ if you buy gear imported from the USA here in EU.
So basically norns would be ~800€ no matter if I got it from monome direcly or from a retailer over here.
It should be said that in general I really prefer to buy directly from the maker, since that ensures that all the money goes to them. In the case of beautiful small-run things made with love like these… that’s really important imho.

Is the preorder going to be announced here or immediately available at 1pm EST on the Monome website?

Exactly my point. You pay more or less the same if you get an ansible from EFN than ordering directly (but monome loses a margin to EFN). correct me if I’m wrong.

Yes that’s exactly the point. Because the reseller will have to pay for the duties and will “forward” the VAT to the final customer, plus they’ll want their slide of the cake, so what monome gets is less than if they sell directly.

immediately at 1pm the preorder opens at http://monome.org

i’ll announce here as well.

I’ve got an Andor 1 waiting to be studied during my summer
I bet the norns will pair beautifully with it

on a separate note
there are a lot of USB ports but does norns work with USB hubs? just incase you want to use all your USBits

Without me needing to sift through the entire thread, is this unit a multi tracker/looper both midi and audio?

not really, it’s more what you want it to be

If you search for @tehn’s posts in this thread you should get a good idea what the device can do.

I loved reading the last line of this article on the way to work today:

“Bungen Oi, one of the temple’s priests, said he did not see anything wrong with giving four-legged friends, albeit of the robotic variety, a proper send-off . “All things have a bit of soul,” he said.”

From the link above:

Consider the powerful old European metaphor of the Wyrd: the stuff of existence being like a woven fabric: an infinite number of fibers meshed at right angles to as many more opposing fibers; each single thread at some point touches and affects every single other opposing thread.

Norns is a loom of the Wyrd.

Side note: Wyrd is the etymological root of “weird”.

Ooopf, this looks/sounds great. I really love the potential. I was eyeing an ER-301 (like many, many others) for a 30hp gap in my system but now i’m not so sure. As i’m already in love with my Grid/Ansible as well as the Mannequins universe and could include a Norns/Crow, at least one W/, and a Teletype in that space… I might be able to expand my field recording/sampling process in the ways that I originally wanted and then some. Ugh, dramatic new potential but a bigger price tag overall.

Thank you for making such inspiring instruments that make for incredibly difficult (yet wonderful) decisions!

I’m anticipating getting ground noise when plugging norns into my laptop via usb (as it happens with everything else I plug in that way, op-1, intellijel midi, blofeld etc etc), has anyone used something like this;
https://hifimediy.com/usb-isolator . ?
Sorry if this is an inappropriate thread to ask in, but if I get a norns it’d be good to be able to use usb if I want to sync things (and it’d be nice to use the usb inputs on those other devices too).

Edit; that thing is out of stock indefinitely, anyone using something else for this?

no
it isn’t

however, since norns is programmable it could be

if the length of the thread is intimidating…i recommend waiting until the product page is up (with a more concise explanation of specs and features)

Aside: I wonder how much caffeine @tehn is drinking today.

New design seems to be up and running! Looks amazing!

The question is: how much will we need to keep norns hooked up to the computer? My guess is: relatively little. It’s a computer, why hook up a computer to the computer?

Offworld-1 would remedy this if/when it’s back in stock. Also a device available for beatstep pro would work, if you could find a use for the other included cables. I have both and have used them successfully for this purpose, but perhaps there won’t be an issue with norns?
