not sure that’s a use case for offworld… it’s a powered device

Fair point, It’s just that I like to work at specific bpm sometimes to make editing easier later in a DAW and I know bpm can be unreliable on some devices (my teletype bpm doesn’t seem the same as ableton, and intellijel metropolis is all over the place) so I find it easier to sync when I’m doing that kind of thing. If this is totally dumb i’d love to be educated on other ways (I still find warping and finding tempo’s really challenging with most of the material I work with)
Edit; I would much prefer to be away from the laptop if possible

I’m sure a link implementation will come

ps sorry to pollute such an exiting thread with something so boring. Just ignore me for now and I’ll make find another thread for this stuff. Back to norns!

OOOOO. had to do a hard refresh in the browser, if anyone else who visits monome.org almost every day isn’t seeing the changes/norns page.

gorgeous stuff, team!

@tehn, the new site looks amazing.

Just wanted to point out that the spec sheet for norns still has a (1) on the first line that doesn’t seem to reference any note on the page. Figure that may be holdover from the post in this thread.

the new site is very pleasing to look at great job
will be looking at it pretty hard come 1…

Yes, so could you not connect the offworld-1 device port to norns, the data port to a computer, and the power port to a usb power adapter to power norns? I’ve only run into noise problems when connecting a powered device to a computer, not sure about a device running on battery power…

you’d only do this to charge norns off your laptop battery which isn’t probably normal. you can of course use any portable USB battery (with huge capacity) to charge norns as well as the wall-adapter.

re: offworld, i need to make more— ordered the parts. they’re open source and easy to make yourself also. or you can do a minor mod to a USB splitter cable (all this info is in another thread)

update: thanks @hypnosapien for the better answer!

sorry to say, the “product page” is incredibly light. it’s impossible to sum up every detail, especially because i don’t have 100% finished scripts with manuals/etc. i plan to update the page once more docs are complete.

2 cups decaf black tea, probably not much

ah, that took me a minute to get it right. sorry you all had to see the brief css meltdown.

will change the stock levels at 1pm EST, thanks everyone!

just to clarify, the norns device port is mainly for charging, but it also has a UART on it. it’s not going to be useful for most purposes, but you can use a terminal to connect to linux w/o wifi. emergency debugging for most people.

that said, there are other ways to do sync— the same way you’d sync between any two normal computers.

It would be REALLY cool if it was Link compatible… https://www.ableton.com/en/link/

Got it. So it acts as a host device, and not a device that can be hosted, correct? Meaning, it could not function as a usb audio interface/usb hub like the novation audiohub? Trivial use anyway, arguably…

it does both. 4 USB-A ports = connect devices. 1 USB-mini-B port = charge and UART. if you connect norns to a computer, it’s a UART device with a linux tty.

so you could use a dumb-tty terminal (basically a screen+keyboard with a tiny bit of logic) to login to the norns and edit code or do whatever linux stuff you want.

edit: no, not like audiohub. audiohub is a device that also has a USB hub built in. norns is a computer with a USB hub and a device port connected to charge circuitry and a UART-USB transceiver. you can’t soft-program the UART to be anything else, because it’s hooked up to the serial pins. (sorry for the too many details)

Dumb question: is a charging cable (or anything else besides Norns) included in the package?

norms is preoder

(Which is to say: typo on the home page)

  • usb wifi nub
  • USB charging adapter (high power)

I think you mentioned this before, but will 1A be sufficient to charge norns?

the origin story of an increasingly all-lowercase aesthetic reveals itself!
