Well, norns arrived.
It is a beautiful new thing!
Thank you all involved in making this a reality!

First question:
As I am just first starting to learn how to navigate it without any externals connected, I was exploring the apps (is that what we call them?) and I got stuck in Flin… how do I get back to the top menu? Either something is not obvious in the interface, or I am thick as a board (likely the latter).
I thought quick tap on key 1 would bring me back out of FLIN, but it just toggles between Flin menu and the graphic interface for Flin…

Thoughts?

I don’t have mine with me atm, but I think it’s:

  • Key 1 to get to the flin menu
  • Key 3 (forward) into ‘Select’ should get you to a list of applications in artfwo’s folder
  • use Enc 2 to navigate and use Key 3 (forward) to load a different application OR Key 2 (back) will go back to the main directory so you can select a different folder.

Recorded some of the stuff requested by peeps above, but the first cut was around 20 minutes! Editing it down so my laptop doesn’t explode from the rendering. Might break it down into smaller chunks, too.

In the mean time, here’s a short demo of “earthsea”, a polyphonic synthesizer script that can be controlled by grid or an external midi controller.

Yup.
Thanks Dan.

Thick as a board it is then.

At first it felt like I “get out” not the same way I “got in”, but it may just take a while to get used to the flow.

How does one tell how much “juice” is left in the battery?

hello!
just unboxing and for some reason i’m focused on wifi first (why i don’t know), but dongle is in, password correct on multiple networks, but no matter what i do it’s “status:failed”. not sure what i’m doing wrong here. anyone else having this problem? i restarted norns, router, everything.

thanks everyone! norns is sure pretty. i’m gonna get my headphones now.

Also, is anyone able to use Norns plugged into a computer with USB and not get lots of line noise? Haven’t had this happen with other similar devices (Axoloti, OP-1…)

Loving it though. So much to learn and explore!

Is there a link to the tutorials anywhere? Don’t see them on the monome page after a quick look on my phone. I’m trying to work out if norns is something that could be useful to me but still quite lost, as in, I don’t know code, how do I make a thing with it? It seems quite impenetrable, which is more of a barrier than the price, for me.

Somewhat related to @glia’s thoughts.

It has been said that tutorials and documentation will be available soon/later. Right now production and shipping of the first 100 has been priority. The first owners are starting to recieve theirs now, so I guess there will be a lot of nice snippets to appear in the following days. Can’t wait to receive mine!

If you see the top post there’s links to all the information to get the picture of what Norns is and potentially will be  basically there’s more than enough scripts featured on delivery to keep us busy. There will also be some kind of Norns studies similar to the Teletype videos IIRC

I had the Very Same Problem.

Is the poly-synthdef source online yet?
Would love to port it to Superdirt
excited to see the synthdefs y’all be making

@tehn

Received shipment today! thanks for this awesome new instrument. Very intuitive. I know the team is super busy so I’m wondering: should we be posting quality-of-life/bugs requests in this thread?

If so: It would be neat to have the menu remember my place/folder cursor when i’m going into the different apps.

e.g.
MAIN MENU > Select > TEHN > [tap back]
Result:
MAIN MENU > Select > ARTFWO
New Behavior:
MAIN MENU > Select > TEHN

Thanks. I ducked out of the thread for a while so didn’t see the examples in the first post. The ‘code’ post is helpful; recording straight to an internal disk sounds great!

One question: is the sound engine a supercollider script? Or does the supercollider code run from a specific sound engine?

wondering the same thing.

curious if this solution will allow norns to sync to an external analog clock? TT is the master clock in my system and it would be fantastic to sync and start/stop the norns with TT.

also, got my ship notification today. thank you all for all your hard work!!!

yeah, i felt bad for posting a bug/issue before a musical example… so expect happy posts soooon!!!

this actually does happen to me with my op-1. be sure to power off something else (the adapter) if connecting audio to the computer.

@jonsimon @bobbcorr try hotspot first. second, your router needs to be in WPA mode.

@philmaguire working on basic docs now, programming docs forthcoming

re: bugs/suggestions, i’ll start a new thread for that, though i’d prefer to hold off until the norns repo is public (so i can also start issues and point at them.) next few days for that.

I certainly can confirm that. It was one of the “features” of OP-1 that made me feel it  In live situations I wanted to make sure that I did not run out of power, so had it connected to USB power supply, which always produced ugly whiny noises.
I mean noses can be lovely. even whiny noises. but when they happen against your intention, that’s a a factor to consider.
