@TanSaturn @TheeDatabomb cool, thanks for the leads. i’m in the early stages of designing the successive crypts structure and these are good inputs.

@mlogger noted. this is going in the “performance mode” suite of ideas.

I love this - but I’m struggling a bit.

Caveat: I have a Fates + DIY grid and while the encoders SEEM quite sensitive I don’t have a real Norns to compare it to. That said, every script I use from maiden or github works fine…

The behavior I’m seeing is in the e2 scrolling through the structure menu - like METABOLISM OFFSET DOCS STRUCTURE - it wants to jump back to the first item in the list constantly, which makes it very hard to set a value.

Also looks like lots of "Error: No match for cell attribute
Error: No match for cell attribute
Error: No match for cell attribute
Error: No match for cell attribute "

in matro

Here’s a video example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZ7drFmVAAk&feature=youtu.be

Any ideas?

update, this doesn’t happen when it is paused? did i miss something obvious in the docs

same behaviour with E2 on my fates

definitely a bug. could you share .arcology file that is exhibiting the behavior? i’ll look into it!

that error message is the last fallback for when attributes aren’t matched which means there’s a bug somewhere!

@Renato hey, this could be a question for the fates thread specifically. If your encoders are jumpy, fates encoders are not debounced on the hardware side. It’s an easy enough fix requiring 2 extra ceramic capacitors per encoder. Again FATES ONLY fix, not for official norns hardware.

EDIT There is a firmware fix to the arcologies specific problem further down thread. This hardware fix still works for the more general jumpy encoder issue that some fates users have experienced.

Check the fates thread, there is a range of values that will work and clear pictures of where to add the caps. Hope this helps.

v1.1.8

  • NEW Add windfarm. For a whirlwind does not last a whole morning, nor does a sudden shower last a whole day.
  • CHANGE Structures are globally enabled and disabled via norns parameters menu now - not just for seeding. Never want to see a particular structure again (i.e. maybe you don’t have a crow)? Now you don’t have to.
  • CHANGE Speaking of never wanting to see structures again… remove banks. They’re boring, un-predictable, not-inspiring, and not fun. Banks from old .arcology files will just be imported as hives. If this is upsetting, see 0aad26 to re-implement.
  • CHANGE Bank glyph is now the institution glyph. The institution glyph is now the forthcoming “fracture” glyph.
  • CHANGE Remove bank attributes: AMORTIZE, DEPRECIATE, NET INCOME, INTEREST, TAXES.
  • CHANGE The > indicator for multi-note structures now shows the note that just played not that note that is about to play. This was a highly controversial decision for me… The right brain won, today.
  • DEV Structure palette is now dynamically populated. Rows and cols are still hardcoded, however.
  • DEV Enormous refactor of “traits” - they are now all “mixins” and each encapsulates logic as well as view behavior. Some of the Cell’s methods have been moved to mixins.
  • DEV I am no longer embarrassed about popup.lua.
  • DEV More refactoring in saveload.lua.
  • DEV Move rerun() to functions.lua.
  • DEV Rename cell.structure_value to cell.structure_name.
  • DEV Rename seed_structure_<NAME> to structure_<NAME> in params.

I have the same jumpy encoder problem on my fates, that stops jumping when paused.
Also casino note lengths don’t seem to be working, I get infinite sustain notes only. Will update shortly and see if this was dealt with. That said, I have been using arcologies with my OP-Z… great combo!

@coreyr thanks for the pointer to the fates thread! i’ll be looking into that for my fates.

this is definitely a separate / arcologies issue though as @tyleretters notes above.

Unfortunately I rebooted my norns since seeing this and didn’t save a file (was my first exploration of the app, didn’t even get as far as “saving” in the docs) but i will share the .arcology file when i next repro it

v1.1.9

  • FIX Fix load bug where all structures turned into hives.

i cannot reproduce this issue. what version are you on?

started playing around with this. very very cool. i want some merch lol

Just updated to the latest, and casino note lengths work now. Hitting pause will leave midi notes hanging tho - probably need an all notes off on pause. The jumpy encoders still happen, on things like topiary and casino, probably due to updating the current note indicator, I’m guessing.

v1.1.10

  • NEW Multi-note structures now have topographies. This attribute allows you to set the direction the melodies play: forward, backward, pendulum, or drunk.
  • FIX Crypt samples are no longer panned slightly.
  • FIX Autons and spomeniks actually transpose notes!
  • CHANGE All midi notes are turned off when pausing.
  • DEV Introduce Cell:register_save_key().
  • DEV More adjustments to saveload.lua.

@marcus_fischer - got the forward/backward/pendulum/drunk feature in! (topography)

@Gerald_Stevens - great feature request to kill all midi on pause. that’s in here! and yay! i’m glad the note lengths work. gah that is super frustrating about the encoders. i’m not even sure how to go about debugging that. @coreyr has a fix involving hardware but i would love to fix it with software. i’ll crosspost over on the fates thread.

@Wisdom.Water - thanks for the jf/crow bugs. those should be fixed.

@spike - the ‘audio louder on one side’ issue is fixed, too.

@ESC i’m glad you’re exploring! what kind of merch lol? stickers is the first thing that came to mind. maybe a branded terrarium

Wow. Thanks. I can’t wait to try it out

thanks so much for all your hard work!!!
would love if there were more structures that moved diagonally. or would reflect off of the edges

this feels like a dumb question but i cant find the envelope settings for the notes? would love a structure for that as well if possible

as far as merch idk. first thing that came to mind was stickers and shirts with all the cool glyphs. ive been making terrariums lol

Didn’t think about it until I saw this - are there ways to control panning of samples? Or are stereo samples supported?

@ESC no envelopes, yet. diagonals and reflections are things i hadn’t considered. i’ll add them to the backlog.

@gimber not yet. crypts were my first time working with softcut and they’re intentionally super rudimentary. i’m mustering up the courage to do something more complex.
