still working my way around with arcologies but here is my second session with it…
(so much to explore!)
this noiz was centered around two norns with arcologies and one with @dan_derks Cheatcodes on some AUX sends.

also…
@tyleretters can the speed/tempo display match the MIDI clock when it’s synced to external clock?

I guess the option for sustained or triggered would be cool to set. It’s also just cool to know the behavior is as designed. Thanks for this script! It is beautiful.

This is totally awesome… Really gorgeous work. Can I use my grayscale grid 128 with this?

this is so cool. thank you for sharing. hahah i love the idea of arcologies + cheat codes working together.

this release v1.0.5 is going to have a lot of midi improvements.

good idea. yeah the intention behind uxb and casino is they play your quarter notes or something. i’ll add another structure for droning. i’m so glad you’re enjoying the script.

thank you! the groundwork exists for grayscale support but isn’t there yet. there are so many user animations that (i feel) rely on varibright support. also i don’t have a grayscale so quality assurance is tricky. if you’d be open to helping test i would consider prioritizing it.

Oooh I have another midi feature request:
Could Casino and VXB have a setting to change the midi channel?

@kasselvania had some thoughts about this too. basically there’d be 16 midi channels and then an omni channel that sends to all, but then we were noodling on a whole crazy “midi bus page” idea thing that would handle all sorts of insanity like that with midi sends etc.

feature logged.

I’m a fan of more crazy! Thank you!

Has anyone got Arcologies to run with TouchOSC? This would be fun to use with the Grid and Arc templates.

I’m in that boat. Interactive theory? This thing is The Glass Bead Game if I’m reading everything correctly.

v1.0.4 is live!

there are some pretty fundamental changes to how things work with hives and raves. long story short is that hives and raves were the first and fourth structures i programed, respectively. the step sequencer graphic up top was wrong from the get-go. per our poll, the metabolism value is now inverted on these two - so 16 is fast and 1 is slow. check out this table for more info. here are the full changelog notes:

  • CHANGE Metabolism now defaults to 13. See the metabolism table in the docs for more information and rationale.
  • CHANGE Metabolism behavior on hives and raves is inverted. 1 is now slow, while 16 is now fast.
  • FIX Steps on the step sequencer for hives and raves accurately reflect when signals will fire.
  • CHANGE If the metabolism of a dome or a maze is less than the global length, then fill in the length by looping the pattern. This makes for much more musical results than what the “pure mathematics” would give us.
  • CHANGE Mazes erase from the beginning of the register instead of the end. This ensures the trains collide head-on instead of riding parallel into deadzones. Note a moving register can allow for notes to slip “under” the playhead. This is intentional.
  • CHANGE Structure is now at the bottom of the designer menu, instead of docs. This lets you crank e2 and know you’ll always land on the structure attribute - much better than landing on docs.
  • CHANGE Tightened up the analysis page.
  • CHANGE Seeding now happens in the parameters menu.
  • NEW Enable and disable structures for seeding on the parameters menu.
  • NEW Loaded arcology name displays on home page.

ALSO here is a playlist of what i listened to while coding arcologies. lots of early mornings with coffee and late nights with brews. all of it but tta and unknownjp is music that i just recently discovered.

Awesome!!! I love the idea of being able to disable the params you seed or don’t seed! Brilliant!!

if you need more noiz for coding…

h/t to @violet for getting the idea going!

@SPIKE nice, thank you for sharing. i’ve got your midi feature requests logged and will probably look to building those this weekend

It’s so wonderful to spend a week away from Norns and when coming back to it there’s all of a sudden a bunch of new and inspiring apps waiting, thank you for your great work

After playing around with this I might’ve come across a bug: I was messing around with the Seed options and when I put the cell population up to 32 Norns completely lost it: it became unresponsive, yet it would send out some sounds maybe every minute or so and the encoder would respond to changes for a few times still, albeit with a very long delay (and after 3 minutes no response or sound anymore). Maybe a CPU overload or something similar happened here?

which version are you on? i just uploaded v1.0.4 which redid a bunch of seed stuff.

I’m on 1.0.4! I updated it like 2 minutes after you posted it here

sweet! i pretty much always seed 32. i tried a few more times now and it’s been fine. sometimes norns just needs a little nap because it gets flustered from all the action. if it happens again take some notes about what you were doing right before and let me know so i can try to reproduce!

i haven’t done much with TouchOSC. i assume i’d need to write some adaptors to make it work?

v1.0.5

  • NEW Ports disappear while copying, allowing you to paste to adjacent cells.
  • FIX Crypts are saved/loaded via their name instead of directory index.
  • FIX Generation resets to 0 after seed instead of persisting.
  • FIX Step animation when metabolism set to 0.
  • DEV Remove local declarations at top of files.
