I’ve always just added added a parameter to manually toggle mode 1. Can I also feature request a parameter for JF God Mode?

  params:add{type = "number", id = "jf.ii mode", min = 0, max = 1, default = 1, action = function(x) crow.ii.jf.mode(x) end}
  params:add{type = "number", id = "jf.ii God Note", min = 0, max = 1, default = 0, action = function(value) crow.ii.jf.god_mode(value) end}

It just changes the tuning of JF to A432 instead of A440. Gotta get the right vibes, ya know? :slight_smile:

i’m doing a stream with Babycastles in a couple days. super stoked:

Software is hard and making art is already hard enough. There are problems of starting, problems of continuing, and problems of finishing. Add to all that mess dependency hells, self-esteem issues, aesthetic merit, questions of authenticity… chart these waters with confidence and you’ll be rewarded with fulfillment and joy. Misstep and risk years of mumbling, “Someday, I’ll finish that thing.”

Join Tyler Etters as he shares strategies and tactics for navigating this messy process from inception to release. Using his latest piece, arcologies, as a case-study, we’ll learn how to get unstuck and persevere through those dark nights.

Tyler Etters is a polymath-artist currently residing in Los Angeles. Arcologies is his latest project. It is “an interactive environment for designing 2d sound arcologies with norns and grid.” You can learn more about him and the project at https://nor.the-rn.info and https://tyleretters.github.io/arcologies-docs

so very cool on so many levels Tyler!

there’s really only one level which is ‘how to make sad drones’

You made sad drones with style and tact and clever design. I make mine with years of undiagnosed depression and finally getting on meds lol. :wink: not as interesting of a workflow…well maybe sometimes.

v1.1.2 & v1.1.3

  • NEW Add spomenik structure - play single notes on JF.
  • NEW Add parameters to init JF i2c mode 1 set tuning (“god mode”).
  • CHANGE The analysis page omits structures that don’t exist.
  • CHANGE The mirage glyph shimmers.
  • DEV Remove all the config.outputs defensive programming.
  • DEV Glyphs are drawn dynamically and require less configuration.
  • FIX Regression issues on analysis page.

@tyleretters,
Can you explain the analysis page a little? It is so beautiful but I’m not sure what I’m seeing.

Thanks.

for sure! it shows you:

  • how many of each structure you have (first number)
  • how many signals exist (again, first number)
  • what step you’re on (second number)
  • what generation you’re on (third number)
  • where the structures and signals are on the grid (via the minimap)
  • relative distribution of signals and structures (pie chart and line chart)
  • additionally, it will highlight the selected signal or structure on the grid as you scroll through the glyphs

Thanks so much for that.

@tyleretters thanks for the update! the new JF parameters are nice; if there were a way to set JF i2c mode to 0 that would also be really helpful when switching things around on the modular.

i was also wondering if it were possible for structures cycling through multiple notes (topiary, casino, forest, auton) to use sequences of less than 8 notes? i think i can create more explicit sequences other ways with multiple structures, but maybe if there were a way to specify the max index number or something?

say more about the use-case for setting JF i2c to mode 0? i’m not too familiar with what that means and it felt the most “user friendly” to only be able to set it to the mode that works with arcologies.

currently sequences for those structures must be 8 notes. i like the idea of setting a max index. i’ll add that to the backlog.

thanks for the quick reply!

there are two cases for me where it would be useful to have explicit control of enabling/disabling JF synth mode (setting crow.ii.jf.mode to 0 or 1):

  • working with an archology that doesn’t use auton or spomenik but want to set JF to its standard function to free it up for other uses inside the modular, then loading an archology with auton/spomenik (and vice-versa)
  • just before quitting arcologies disabling synth mode so that it’s possible to use JF in it’s standard functionality without restarting the modular

re: 8 note sequences: thanks, looking forward to it! i was wanting to make 3, 5, 7 note sequences for some other variations :grinning:

noted. this will be in the next release.

(note that when you quit arcologies it does set jf mode back to 0 for you.)

A belated but heartfelt thank you for sharing your creation with us. Arcologies has been merrily evolving throughout the day as I’m grinding my way through various backlogs.

v1.1.4

  • NEW Sync tempo with MIDI devices, Ableton Link, and crow.
  • NEW Toggle playback with MIDI devices.
  • NEW Uxbs and casinos have a MIDI channel attribute.
  • NEW MIDI PANIC! action in the parameters menu to turn all notes off.
  • CHANGE Can now select JF i2c mode 0 in parameters menu.
  • FIX Moved JF i2c cleanup to happen before resetting crow.
  • FIX Bug with loading crypts from .arcology files.
  • DEV Moved fn.arcdebug(), fn.screenshot(), and fn.wtfscale() to functions.lua.

@SPIKE, @jflee, @mlogger, @TanSaturn :point_up:

(p.s. there was a bit of a messy merge and hack-n-slash action involving clocks with this release. also i only tested on what limited gear i have so i expect there to be some issues with different types of hardware. i tested with a beatstep pro for tempo/playback and a moog sirin for midi channels.)
