I am excited to share my album S C R I P T S.

Released today on Bandcamp – available digitally and on Compact Disc.

The album has been in the works since 2020 and features 17 selected modular synthesizer patches created between 2020 and 2023. Each track is an excerpt from longer one-take stereo recordings of fully generative and self-playing patches running on my 6U 104 HP modular synthesizer.

The album is available on Bandcamp as Digital Download and on CD – as a limited run of 100, coming in a nice Digipack with japanese-style obi strip. I am very much looking forward to sending them out to some of you.

About the process:

Starting in 2020, I’ve been posting 1-minute snippets of patches daily on Instagram for almost two years. It started as an experiment for myself and turned into a very fruitful routine to keep me creatively active and patching regularly.

Every patch started with a blank patch on my modular. Teletype is the center brain of everything going on – sequencing and modulating Mangrove, Just Friends, et. al., and also external synths via i2c2midi. Structure, timing, rythm, harmony, melody – all is controlled from Teletype.

After creating a patch, I usually recorded 15-30 minutes of video and audio, without touching it or interfering. I then selected multiple 1-minute snippets for Instagram. For the album, I went through all the material again, trying to select sections of the recordings that would work as individual tracks.

After a tedious and nerve-racking process of going through the recorded material and boiling it down to a selection for the album, I gave the tracks to my good friend Timm Roller, who did a fantastic job of mastering the album – dealing with many different sounding recordings.

Many thanks to Timm and @ParanormalPatroler for helping me make this record a reality. Shout-out also to @scanner_darkly , @Obakegaku and User Friendly (https://linktr.ee/Userfriendlysounds).

Patch Notes

M A G M A — Teletype sequencing Nord Lead and Pulsar 23. Drone notes by Nord Lead, percussions by Pulsar 23. Additional sounds by Nord Drum and disting EX, going into Mimeophon, into Nebulae. Everything into Ooots, into Bam.

F I R M A M E N T — Teletype sequencing Ensemble Oscillator and Mangrove. Ensemble Oscillator as mono synth voice, arpeggiated and shifted through the scale via Teletype. Additional singular notes are picked randomly from the scale, played by Mangrove and fed into Nebulae, running in Circular Recording mode and with a very low Density setting. Everything into Mimeophon, into Ooots, into Bim and Bam.

M E T R O I D — Teletype sequencing Mangrove, disting EX and Nord Lead. Notes are stored in Teletype’s Tracker and played in a loop. Individual notes are randomly changed to different predefined values. Before beeing played by Mangrove, notes are randomly transposed one octave up or down. Mangrove into VCFQ, into Mimeophon. Everything into Ooots, into Bam.

P R I S M A — Teletype sequencing Nord Lead, Just Friends, Pulsar 23 and Mangrove. A sequence of predefined chords is advancing at varying speed. Just Friends, Pulsar 23 and Nord Lead are then selecting notes from the current chord, modulating octave, speed and order. Mangrove is playing the respective root note of the chord with a long attack. Pulsar 23 in Bass MIDI mode. Just Friends into VCFQ, into Waver. Mimeophon adds some delays and shimmer. Additional percussion sounds by Pulsar 23. Everything into Ooots, into Bam.

A P P R O X I M A T I O N — Teletype sequencing Nord Drum, Pulsar 23 and Analog Four. Nord Drum into disting EX running Granulator algorithm, with Rate, Size and Delay modulated. Notes by Mangrove, into Waver, into VCFQ, into Nebulae. Everything into Mimeophon with heavy modulation of Mix, Repeats, Zone, Color, Flip and Hold, into Ooots, into Bam.

I N E R T I A — Teletype sequencing Nord Drum, disting EX, Mangrove and Analog Four. The predefined sequence of drum sounds is triggering Nord Drum, with random pitch and sound design modulation. Nord Drum feeds into disting EX running Granulator algorithm, with Rate, Size and Pitch modulated by varying degree, which decreases over time. Occasional general pauses are triggered randomly within Teletype. Mangrove into VCFQ, into Waver, into Nebulae. Everything into Mimeophon, into Ooots, into Bam.

G R O W T H — Teletype sequencing Nord Drum, Analog Four, Mangrove and disting EX. Nord Drum‘s voices are triggered multiple times, with an increasing number of repetition for each iteration. Each trigger is delayed by a random value, which also increases per iteration. Additional notes by Analog Four, Mangrove and disting EX. Nord Drum into Mimeophon. Mangrove into Nebulae. Everything into Ooots, into Bam running in Spillover Mode and beeing turned on and off via Teletype.

C O N T R O L — Teletype sequencing Mangrove, Just Friends, disting EX and 0-Coast. Two notes of Mangrove‘s sequence are raised in the scale per iteration. Just Friends for chords, with FM and Ramp modulated. disting EX running SD Multisample algorithm for piano notes. 0-Coast sequenced by Teletype, with Overtones, Multiply and Balance modulated, into VCFQ. All four voices summed via Drum Stereo Mixer, into Nebulae with very low speed setting and Blend modulated with sudden changes. Nebulae into Mimeophon, with Zone, Repeats, Color, Halo, Flip and Hold modulated. Additional tones by Analog Four. Everything into Ooots, into Bam.

P A S T D A Y S — Teletype sequencing Mangrove, Just Friends and Sub 37. Just Friends for chords, Sub 37 for bass. Mangrove for melody, into VCFQ, into Mimeophon. Additional tones from Analog Four running freely. Everything into Ooots, into Bam, which is also modulated by Teletype via MIDI.

A M B I G U I T Y — Teletype sequencing disting EX and Mangrove. Notes are picked randomly from a fixed set of chromatic notes. Everything into Nebulae, running in Circular Recording mode, randomly pitching sounds up or down by one or two octaves, and constantly varying the playback speed. Nebulae into Mimeophon, into Ooots, into Bam.

M I D N I G H T R A I N — Teletype sequencing Ensemble Oscillator, disting EX, Nord Lead and Analog Four. Ensemble Oscillator for chords, into Nebulae, into Mimeophon. disting EX for piano. Nord Lead for melody, Analog Four running freely for additional tonal and percussive sounds. Everything into Ooots, into Bim and Bam.

H U N C H E S — Teletype sequencing Ensemble Oscillator, 0-Coast and Analog Four. Ensemble Oscillator for chords, 0-Coast for accompanying voice, Analog Four for melody. Everything into Mimeophon, into Ooots, into Bam.

B U F F E R — Teletype sequencing Mangrove, disting EX and Just Friends. Nebulae looping a recording of an earlier patch. Nabulae with Density and Size on very low settings. Bass from Mangrove, piano from disting EX, chords from Just Friends. Everything into Mimeophon, into Ooots, into Bam.

I S O C H R O N — Teletype sequencing disting EX, Mangrove, Plaits, Ensemble Oscillator and Analog Four. disting EX running SD Multisample algorithm, into Mimeophon, into Nebulae. The sequence consists of both random and fixed sample triggers. Additional sounds from Mangrove, Plaits, Ensemble Oscillator and Analog Four. Additional modulation from Batumi and Rampage. Everything into Ooots, into Bam.

S H R I N K — Teletype sequencing Nord Drum and Mangrove. Nord Drum into disting EX running Granulator algorithm with heavy modulation. A predefined drum sequence is randomly filled or thinned, while the tempo on Teletype is continuously changing via a regular external trigger, with occasional general pauses. Mangrove for bass notes, into Nebulae. Everything into Mimeophon, into Ooots, into Bam.

P R E S S U R E — Teletype sequencing Pulsar 23, Nord Drum and Mangrove. Both into disting EX running Granulator algorithm with heavy modulation. Mangrove into Nebulae. Everything into Mimeophon, into Ooots, into Bam.

M E R G E — Teletype sequencing Just Friends, Mangrove, disting EX, Analog Four and Nord Lead. Just Friends, Mangrove and disting EX into Mimeophon, into Nebulae. Nebulae running in Circular Recording mode. The recorded buffer loop of Nebulae is pitched one octave down and played at a much slower and reversed speed, then mixed with the live input and overdubbed with the buffer. Additional sounds by Analog Four and Nord Lead. Everything into Ooots, into Bam.

The album is beautiful and strange and intense. I’d hoped that your instagram work would result in something like this. No shade to other artists who are similarly modular-centric, but imo you are creating music at a level that few other people will ever get to in terms of using the tools they have at their disposal, with understanding and seeming intention. You have an aesthetic and point of view that fully transcends the gear and you’ve settled on a process that is clearly an art practice and not just some jams. Thanks for this, really inspiring.

Well… this is a masterpiece.

The first truly great piece of art of the teletype age. It simultaneously sounds like some mysterious historical artefact, possibly discovered inside a tomb on mars, and like a transmission - a warning perhaps - sent back to us from a future civilisation.

I’ve said this before (or words to this effect): what is utterly extraordinary about Attowatt’s music is how it manages to sound so new and fresh, whilst at the same time after you hear each sound your brain says “Yes! Exactly! That had to be there right then!” Like everything is Just. So.

This is a really incredible work. Like many others I’ve been hoping for an album length version of your Instagram snippets. I would love to hear more about your approach to harmony on this album which jumped out to me hearing these flesh out - getting a generative patch to keep a sense of movement through an entire song can be difficult and these songs make it seem effortless and inevitable. Looking forward to repeat listens.

Also- :white_heart: patch notes! :white_heart:

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your incredibly flattering and kind words. It really means a lot to me!

I’ve put a lot of heart and work into it – and I’m both excited and relieved that the album is finally out now. It fills me with great joy that you all like the result.

I will post more thoughts about the approach and techniques used in these patches in the coming days.

This is excellent. Had a chance now to listen in a few different spatial/mental contexts and enjoyed every instance.

All this time I’ve been wondering how you could have so much excellent patch content and just trickle it out bit by bit on IG. Now all is revealed!
