Tangentially, I’d also like to ask folx to consider signing this online petition to support Bandcamp workers in their fight for union recognition. Bandcamp has changed ownership twice recently and if ever there was a time to press for the democratic representation of its workforce, it’s now.

That said, I’m generally doubtful that online petitions achieve what they set out to do, but it’s got to be worth a try.

Today, 03 November 2023, is Bandcamp Friday, when Bandcamp, an online music store primarily for independent musicians, waives its fees for 24 hours.

All sales made during the day go directly to the artists.

My latest album, “sentinel of time”, a longform (approx 53 minutes) continuous mix of instrumental ambient drone music, is available to stream or buy at:

Any proceeds I make from sales of this album will be donated to Earth/Percent- “a fundraising and grant-making charity that will provide grants to a range of other charities and charitable causes for the benefit of individuals and communities, with a particular focus on charities that work to preserve the environment for the public benefit”. (Via the Charity Commission for England and Wales)

“sentinel of time” is a lament for the iconic and culturally significant tree at Sycamore Gap in Northumberland, England. The tree was criminally felled in the early hours of 28 September 2023 in what the authorities described as “an act of vandalism”.

The felling of the tree led to an outpouring of anger and sadness. Over the decades it had become the backdrop for marriage proposals, weddings or spreading ashes of loved ones.

From 2001 to 2022, the county of Northumberland lost 27.9 kha (nearly 69 acres) of tree cover, equivalent to a 34% decrease in tree cover since 2000.

I love Bandcamp Friday, and want to support artists, but it’s time to have a conversation about the amount of spam that’s sent out each and every month.

I dread Bandcamp Friday now, because it’s an absolute nightmare for my inbox. I want to keep up with the artists I dig, but to have every artist I’ve ever so much as liked on Bandcamp “remind” me that it’s Bandcamp Friday, sometimes several times in a day, is nonsense.

Sadly one is almost forced to push things around that Friday as in the days before and after not much is happening in terms of sales. So it‘s either risking annoying people or leaving out an entire week or sales each month.

It certainly is not ideal.

I just checked a random email I received earlier and, right at the bottom of the page, there’s link to unfollow. Maybe it’s worth unfollowing from the notifications emails you’re sent?

My latest release of single-take modular pieces, East Island Electronic Research, is a fun time (in my opinion, obviously). Focused on exploring patch programming, minimal melodic sequencing, and other attempts to break out of my usual techniques of track creation.
