This would be INSANE

I saw on your website a photo (I was hoping it was a video) of a performance of yours using 3 instances on Borderlands. I assume that this meant 3 iOS devices… Is there a multiple instance (for example in AUM) on one device possible in the future?

i have the video of the final performance somewhere. i should upload it. it was indeed 3 separate ipads, but yes i would love to support multiinstance (and multichannel routing) in the future. i have no idea where to start with Auv3 support, but it seems that will be pretty important for the future of the app…

Just uploaded a track to soundcloud made only with Borderlands and some AU effects. Hope this is okay to post here!

And thank you for the incredible app! I say this with no exaggeration, my iPad with Borderlands is one of my favorite instruments.

Hello again!

Happy to share that Borderlands Granular Version 2.1.2 is available NOW as a free update for existing users. To celebrate the fact that it only took a couple months to get this one out there instead of 5 years, the app will be on sale for 25% off for a limited time. ⁣

This incremental update includes two lovely artist scenes from arovane! Other improvements include bluetooth headset / speaker compatibility, a fix for the inverted pan (oops!), smoothed ring mod amplitude param (removed zipper noise), improved scene browser resolution for iPad pro, and a higher drag threshold for clouds in ADSR mode to keep the cloud stationary when triggering the envelope. ⁣

Thanks for supporting the app! More to come soon. ⁣

Oh boy. Updating now, signing off!

Thank you for this!!!

One thing I can’t figure out no matter how hard i try… how in the world do I get the sound to come out of my headphones??? I’m using AirPods connected to my iPad… i feel like I’m missing something really obvious here?

yes… turns out it’s still broken. gah. had it working here, but seems to have been an anomaly. fortunately, i fixed the problem over the weekend and confirmed via testing with several people who reported the issue. in normal operation, the app should just automatically switch over to the bluetooth out when the system swaps over, but there was a setting inside borderlands which was causing confusion there. sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn’t. now it works consistently! should have the fix in the store in the next day or two (along with a fix for the text input color changing when the iPad is running in Dark Mode… a user pointed out that dark mode swapped the color to white…on a white background). thanks for your patience and sorry for the trouble!

Any chance you could add a randomize button? Randomizing the parameters in a selected cloud would be a way to find happy accidents. Just a thought!

I’m sorry to ask such a mundane question (of such a fabulous creation), but I can’t work out how (or if) user Recordings in the Trash can be restored to Recordings? I note they’re still playable and can be ‘copied to the Pasteboard’. However I don’t see these Trashed (or Pasteboard) files when I look for them in my iPad’s Borderlands folder? I expect I’m missing something obvious here - like, don’t trash files you want to keep! /Giles

Hi all. Longtime lurker on Lines, first time poster here! I am very interested in this software, and am seriously considering buying an iPad exclusively to use this with my hardware (Eurorack, OTmk2, Hydrasynth, Deluge). So I have a few questions, I would be grateful for your help! I would like to run audio in and out of Borderlands and and effect it real time, I’d also like to sync to a midi clock. I am very experienced with synths/audio tech but am new to iOS music.

  1. I am having trouble finding minimum hardware specifications for Borderlands 2.1. Will this app run on an iPan Mini 2 comfortably? Would the screen be too small?
  2. Will any class compliant audio interface suffice to get audio in and out? E.g. behringer UCA202?
  3. Is there a standard way to get midi/clock in and out of an iPad? (needs to be some wired means since I won’t typically be using this near a computer - just the hardware mentioned above).
  4. I essentially want to treat Borderlands like any other hardware synth - what additional hardware do I need, besides the iPad) to do this?

Many thanks!

Look at the MOTU M4 for an interface with very low latency and great specs for a great price…

I haven’t used Borderlands on a mini but you should be fine in most cases (it still works on my old iPad 2). You might wish for a larger screen if you have a lot of different audio files opened in Borderlands, but if you’re planning on using it primarily for live input I really don’t think it would be an issue.

I’m pretty sure any class compliant interface will work. I use a Steinberg UR-22 mkii and have never had an issue (though that M4 does look very nice…I hadn’t seen that before).

As for MIDI clock from other hardware, in my case I’d just send a MIDI clock into the MIDI port on the UR-22 and that’s that. BUT…I don’t think Borderlands currently supports MIDI clock sync?

Thanks, good to know Borderlands runs on older hardware

I’ll try my cheap spare Behringer AI and report back in due course.

I think Borderlands can clock midi at least with Ableton Link but not 100% sure.

Yep Link support was added to Borderlands in the last big update earlier this year!

hey! thanks for the questions and sorry for my delay in chiming in here. i think all of your questions have already been covered, but i’ll add my thoughts…

  1. only requirement for hardware is that the iPad supports 64 bit apps and can run iOS 8 or above. Apple recently removed support for 32 bit devices (older iPads before 2015 or so, i believe)… so, while borderlands still runs well on my 2011 iPad 2, it’s not possible to install new versions / push new versions for those early iPads. i have been developing with an iPad mini 2 for awhile now, but just recently ran into an issue with not being able to update it to iOS 13. i’d recommend finding an ipad from the past 2 years or so to ensure your iPad is able to run borderlands updates a bit farther into the future.

  2. yes, any class compliant USB audio device works (with the connection kit you can purchase from apple)

  3. borderlands doesn’t currently support midi clock, but does support Link (albeit with some bugs that i’m working through currently). i think there are apps out there for converting midi clock to Link. best bet for connecting midi to the iPad is through the usb audio interface as it also needs to go through the lightning connector.

  4. main thing is the audio / midi interface. hoping to work on midi cc mapping and OSC input too, so you might want to add a controller to the list eventually… probably awhile off though given how slow development is at the moment.

hope you enjoy it!
