Apropos of nothing, I’ll just throw in that Audio Hijack is one of Earth’s best pieces of software.

Also: Lumen!

I don’t actually use that many; but the things I use all the time that Spotlight doesn’t do are (a) navigated around Finder with the keyboard; (b) restart and © eject drive

A humble vote in favour of Homebrew here. I’ve compiled enough software from source to know dependency hell and love how Homebrew takes that pain away. Also with Xcode’s “ownership” of command-line tools these days, sometimes I really can’t be bothered ./configure-make-install-ing things. I didn’t like Homebrew at first but it has matured.

This is a really key point. There was much pain in the early days. I haven’t encountered any in a good while though.

Just setup a new mac and remembered this thread. A few things to add/reemphasize:

  • bartender is great for taking back your menu bar
  • since I last posted, I’ve fallen in love with alfred for application launching (and more)
  • I’m a big fan of 1password for password management

More generally, anyone on a unix system who uses git should consider these git completion scripts; so awesome.

For all the people using Better Touch Tool on Mac OSX, I have a question about monitor volume control with a UA Apollo audio interface. (BTW this app is a godsend for me).

So, I own an Apollo x6 audio interface hooked up to my MacBook Pro (w/ touchbar), and it’s kind of inconvenient to control the monitor volume from the hardware because it’s a bit far from the computer. As far as I know the only way one can control the volume independently of the hardware is the key command ⌘ + F11/12. Right now I have BTT configured to control the monitor volume by tapping the top right (vol. up) & bottom right (vol. down) of my touchpad mapped to those key commands, this works great but I wonder if there is a way to control the volume by sliding my finger up and down the right side of the touchpad? I imagine this may be possible with a script, since BTT supports writing in your own script? Or maybe use the built in midi configuration triggers?
