I received my CVGT1 today and played around with Zellen on Norns with the 208r. Adding subtle random timbre modulation made it all come to life in a wonderful way. I should have picked up a euro/banana converter years ago…

Hi All! I’m the featured artist this month on The Source Of Uncertainty: Artist Spotlight Podcast. The episode features a new, 20 minute piece that was written only using an Easel and effects.

The music was mastered by Nathan Moody at Obsidian Sound (http://obsidiansound.net/)

Does anyone know when the new 208c desktop Easel is actually going to be out? I’ve been following some stores who have pre-order options for it in Reverb but it keeps getting pushed back?

Also, Does anyone know how the usb input works in terms of mapping? Like can you theoretically assign any midi parameter to any function on the easel? I’ve seen one or two demos with the Sensel Morph and it seems like that’s possible.

Lastly, in general, If I were going to use euro with Buchla, the primary conversion happens with 1v/o to 1.2v/o, gate to pulse, and then obviously 1/8" to banana, but what about other voltages for non-pitch related things? For example the new Make Noise 0-Ctrl seems like it would be a good companion for this new Easel. Basically what I’m trying to say is, if I bought the 208c, would I have to start buying more Buchla to control it?

Curious too since this would delay a new easel. I suspect that it’s either COVID slowing down production or it’s something to do with the new hardware. Definitely odd since they seemed to indicate that they were going to get them out the door last month.

Their Instagram post on May 14 said “Coming in weeks, not months”. And someone posted on MW that he recently talked to Eric, who told him they’re calibrating and testing them and they’re waiting on boats, and will ship this month.

I’m sure they’re doing the best they can. I’ve had a Command Module on order since January and very much looking forward to getting it.

Facing Ourselves (the music featured on the podcast) is now available on bandcamp as a bonus track with my new album Easel Music.

The album was made only using a Music Easel, field recordings/found sounds, and effects.

If anyone is interested in purchasing the album, please consider doing so on 6/19 so the money goes towards Bandcamp’s NAACP fundraiser.

@Tyresta Listened to this twice today. Really love it. Its not doing much to quell my desire for an Easel though. I’m waiting to make a purchase till tomorrow, to get that donation going. Cheers!

Thanks so much, Donny! That means a lot. Happy to fan the Buchla flames. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:  I’m currently selling all of my eurorack gear and putting the money towards some 200 series clones.

Anyone get the 208c?

I’ve had mine for a month and I’ve been loving it.
I ended up selling the majority of my eurorack (kept a few things to control the 208 for now), but I’m just really enjoying the Buchla environment. After a little transition in mindset, I realize I haven’t missed any of the tools I relied upon in Euro, ie things like Maths, Stages. Its causing me to patch a little more creatively, and I don’t feel like I have option overload. I did hang onto the 0-Ctrl, Pressure Points and a Quantizer, and I’m finding that going back and forth from euro to Buchla is relatively painless.
The biggest thing I’ve noticed is the sound. I don’t know what is going on with the circuit, but the Buchla just sounds worlds better, even than the Verbos stuff that I had. I seems to have more headroom, and is just more 3d sounding. It just makes me want to have less voices because I just love hearing the root sounds so much.

Me! I love it. Really love it. I agree with everything you say. It might seem very limited compared to my Euro system but I’m very much enjoying working within those limitations. It’s so playable and responsive.
I bet the 0-Ctrl is great with it. I’ve been using Pressure Points and Rene a lot. And definitely yes about the sound, too.

Makes me want more Buchla gear. Ack!

I have just been listening to the new bandcamp release by Benge, Devils Leap.

of interest here as its using "the Buchla 200 Electric Music Box, a system that I have recently put together consisting of modules that are replicas of Don Buchla’s original 1970s designs "
whats more,
“During the composition of this album I also made use of a Roland S760 Digital Stereo Sampler and Atari Computer running C-Lab Notator sequencing software. This decision was taken so that I could emulate the composition techniques of the middle 1980s”

Thought this would be of interest here. I think it has a lovely sound, quite ambient soundtracky with some good hauntology moments creeping along within it. A nice line in synthy rattling clonky sounds too.

I know its a release but thought it was ok to put here. Worth reading his notes on the release on the bandcamp page for the equipment stuff.

I was lucky to acquire a used Easel Command this week and really am in love with it. I’m finding myself jonesing for a 218 but am happy with the Keystep and 0-ctrl as controllers. Also plays really nicely with iOS sequencers. Here’s some noodles from first few days.

great sounds! excited to see what kind of changes they might make to the 218 (hopefully coming out soon). also, anyone interested in buchla history should check out mark verbos’ blog from the early 2010s… pretty cool to dive into his connection to buchla/grant richter as his modules stem from years and years of working with almost every buchla design known to man.

I am looking for a good solution to connect my eurorack fx to my incoming Buchla Easel command. Is there some conversion box or something that lets me use Buchla cv to control eurorack fx?

Low gain makes this and this. Works great!

In addition to a format jumbler (I like the Error Instruments one myself) you may also want to have attenuation & offset utilities around.

Buchla CV in my (limited) experience is positive only, and often 0v-10v. Depending on which modules you aim to modulate in Euroland, you might want or need to cap that at 5v or provide a negative offset to make it -5v - 5v. I use an ALM / Busy Circuits o/a/x2 and it works well.
