I believe it will stay with hand operation as it is called the, “Human-Controlled Tape-Transport” HC-TT instead of the MC-TT

I think he said something about CV control over the speed and direction but I could be remembering that wrong.

That would make my day!!!

Ditto! That’s the dream right there.

Not sure about direction, but I’m pretty sure I saw a CV-controlled tape thing some time ago.

i’ve done a few different things with cassettes. i have a multitrack yamaha mt4x and an old walkman. i mostly use them as accompaniment/additional sound sources. pre-recorded instruments and field recordings. sometimes i manually fade-in/out material on separate tracks, to bring different sounds into focus, sort of “playing” the tape machine. most tape usage is hands-off; i play melodies over the top of the tapes using other instruments, or even just letting the tape run through the modular as a semi-generative experiment.

for sure the gieskes modules are pretty rad!

Me myself I usually do it the dirty way, I actually record a loop on one whole side of a cassette and let it run when I need it, in this one the tape is triggering a rasperry pi module that’s detecting the beat and keeping everything together.

In this live-set I used several tape loops, running them thru a matrix mixer to do parallel processing with guitar pedals and triggering two almost-sine oscillators

Curious about which cassette brands people are using for making tape loops and where to get them.

i use maxell sa90 tapes mostly, but anything will work

I use pretty much anything but I got a batch of 52 blank C15 tapes from the 80s that had not been kept in very good condition and they’re great for an instant basinski feel.

I’ve been getting anything special (like those C15s or some longer loop tapes, like the 12 minute loop tapes, that you can’t really make at home) from https://tapeline.info/v2/ otherwise I just raid charity shops, people’s attics, that kinda thing. The quality of the tapes varies, but if you’re wanting pristine sound, you’ll probably not be using tapes in the first place

@boboter / anyone with a Fostex X-28: can you simultaneously play back the four cassette tracks, mix four additional incoming live signals, and run each to the aux send, mixing down to a single stereo mix?

I think this is possible, but I was having trouble fully understanding from the manual.

That’s possible, yes. I never actually tried it but I’m very certain. The manual is indeed very complicated. I read it a few times and am still not sure about some things. Should you get the Fostex, just sacrifice a few tapes and try out what the controls do. I still ruin a couple of takes everytime I use it

Understood, thanks! Having cassette playback (hopefully with modified [ideally CV] speed control) and a simple mixer all in one compact device is my eventual aim :space_invader:

Making some mistakes to get there is something I’m already expecting, haha.

One thing to note is that the headphone out picks up quite a bit of hum. I always use it with headphones. It’s a bit annoying but I got used to it.

I’ve just started integrating 4-track with my new system that I’m building around my morphagene. I have everything running through my hall of fame and my flashback. I’m still got a lot to learn but it’s definitely a fun process…https://songadayforamonth.com/#/song/-L3aXTKWZqNRd-T8OuHP

@scttcmpbll Do you currently make either for sale?
