hopefully these help:

on-norns, no grid
  • navigate to [loops]
  • navigate to L
  • press K3 to enter the local L view
  • hold K1 and turn E1 to change to L2 or L3
  • hold K2 and press K3 to start recording into the selected segment
on grid

  • press any of the bottom rec L(x) buttons to switch focus between segments L1, L2, L3
  • after a segment is focused, press the rec L button again to toggle recording into that segment

please lmk tho!

I forgot how absolutely bonkers fun it is to run Live audio into cheat codes. here’s a clip from last night, sequencing an instance of Diva with @rjonline00’s lil pup.

  • Link keeps Ableton Live and cheat codes synced up
    • Diva sequenced by lil pup while I manually adjust the filter cutoff
  • i’ve got a line out from my computer into cheat codes, recording into L1 on a loop
    • all banks are pointed to L1
  • i generated a random pattern on bank A (distro, 2 bars), pitched all pads up with ALT+zilchmo, cranked the filter on bank A to full HP
  • bank B is arpeggiating between three pads
  • bank C is sequenced by euclid, in span mode, with auto rotate
  • all three banks are receiving rnd panning
  • each bank is being sent to cc2’s delay
    • doing a little bit of delay manipulation on grid

this config was really enjoyable – since lil pup fully took care of the melodic sequencing, i got to focus on using the filter cutoff as a way to accentuate what all of the banks would chew on. everything was synced up through Link, which led to some nice pockets as the timbral changes were off-grid.

anyway. very fun to keep finding new ways to mess with this thing.

Hi. I was able to put my hands on midigrid library by @beepboop.
I have only one question for him if he’s listening: why the readme.md refer to midigrid_2pages if there is no midigrid_2pages.lua in the repository??? :expressionless:

this is the repo you need: https://github.com/jaggednz/midigrid
the readme is old the two pages is now midigrid/mg_128

@dan_derks CC2 is so incredible, thank you for all of this!

wanted to echo a bug that @bloc had a few weeks ago - alt + focus doesn’t work for me, but ALT + focus does. i’m on the latest update of CC2 on a grayscale grid, i’m not sure if something regressed or not or if it’s something on my end, but figured i’d let you know!

thanks for the reminder! done

rev 201203

fixed:

  • lowercase alt can perform focus hold (ty @bloc + @888m)
  • if MFT doesn’t have a port, ignore it until one is assigned (ty @mattlowery)

Hey Dan is it possible to have a cc2 version without waveforms, same as cc1? I find myself getting distracted from visuals, I prefer a minimal visual approach. I might ask too much I know, no expectations

hey! in progress
that’s what the (not yet accessible) # submenu is in [loops]

@dan_derks Thank you so much! The original CC inspired me to start learning about norns, and put together a shield a month ago. I finished it this week, and found out about CC2. I also found an older version of grids for super cheap! Here’s an idea I had today using CC2, Organelle, OP-1, and SP-555 for effects

Hi! Today I’ve made a sketch with a guitar and Cheat Codes 2.
Cheat Codes is a great muse!

hi! was messing around with CC2 today and stumbled into a weird state… not sure if i’m missing something or not, but i was messing around recording into the live buffers, had some stuff going on buffers 1 and 2 and then switched to three to record another loop, but the waveform for L3 wouldn’t appear - the recording was working fine seemingly, but there was no waveform for L3 or the bank that was using the buffer. I stopped CC2 and reopened it from a new state and then i couldn’t record into the buffers at all! no waveforms would show up and no sound would come through. i put the norns to sleep and restarted everything and it works fine now - but was curious if i somehow messed something up or if that’s a new bug!

hi hi!
haven’t run into any similar reports, so perhaps a one-off issue if you aren’t able to reproduce it again.

if you do run into this again and can reliably reproduce it, please let me know how you were triggering recording (grid key, midi, on-norns, etc), what mode the specific Live segment was in (one shot, loop, etc), confirm that you’re on the latest version of the script, and i’m sure we can hunt it down

Hi! Could someone explain how to get these stutter glitch effects? I can’t find any clue on the manual (but I’m sure it’s explained somewhere).

If by stutter/glitch effect, you mean short step repeats, if you turn on looping for a pad and have a short window selected for its assigned sample you will get the stutter. You can also set a decay envelope for the pad so that it doesn’t continue to repeat after a set time.

Thanks, that was what I looking for! I’m going to try it right now

Ok, I’ve achieved the stutter effect. However I couldn’t set a decay envelope for the pad. Where is described this procedure? And one question more: I guess is possible to record encoder gestures (like change in real time start and/or end points), how could I do that? Thanks in advance!

glad to hear it worked out!

the [levels] section of the manual + script:

  • three envelope shapes
  • option for cycling (vs one-shot)
  • adjustable durations (0.1s to 30 seconds)

hold k1 to apply the changes to the whole bank, otherwise these are per-pad

if you’re talking about the on-board norns encoders, not currently possible. i’m working on a new pattern recorder library to achieve this, though.

arc encoders are currently able to, though! those are through the A sections of the [timing] screen.

I’ve already read the levels section but I forgot it :man_facepalming:t2:

Yes, I was talking about the on-board norns encoders…

This will be incredible!
I don’t have an arc (yet!)

Time for an exercise is vulnerability: can someone walk me through arps? I am having trouble getting anything going there.

I’ve got bank b pointed at a prerecorded clip, which plays back as expected. I see the three dots on the norns display. But from this point forward, my experience is divergent from the docs. I haven’t yet seen the large numbers that are present on the display in the docs. Just so I understand correctly-- does arp work without a midi controller attached?

I do not have a pattern recorded for bank b. Is that necessary?

While tweaking knobs, I changed the start point to “0” and can’t get it off “0” now. Is that an issue?

EDIT: Got it working with my key step attached! Am still wondering if arp should be resounding to grid presses though.

apologies for any confusion!

  • press this arp key to enable arps on the specified bank
  • hold down some bank pads, they should start cycling between each other
  • press this arp key again to hold that configuration
  • press this arp key again to pause the arp (press it again to play the arp again)
  • alt + arp to clear the arp

depending on PARAMETERS > patterns + arps > arp x hold style:

  • last pressed means that while the arp is in a hold state, it will cycle between the last pressed pads. this is super fun for quick changes and is aligned with how the Ableton Live arpeggiator works
  • additive means that while the arp is in a hold state, subsequent presses will be added to the arpeggiation, making arps sort of like an on the fly sequencer. here’s where the s/e controls on the [arp] screen really help – you can window between different sections of these held keys

lmk if this doesn’t get you going!

no, in fact arps + playing patterns do not currently coexist well. have only one or the other playing at a time. for those keeping score at home, this is also part of the pattern recorder rewrite i mentioned above

fwiw, i’m working on securing a host for an actual cheat codes deep dive/workshop/class where we can all zoom call and work through these “video is worth 100000 words” situations

Arrrgggggggggg matey! Hiding in plain sight! I knew it would be user error.

Up and running now! Thanks Dan.

Will be back for a proper gush fest. Today is my first true session and, my god dude…
