ahhh that’s fair yea - I could see how having some kind of programming background would speed up the learning curve

short of providing what yr looking for one option could be trying out something closer to conventional programming to get a little better handle on the logic side of things (maybe something like Processing). might not help you personally but just a thought. sometimes it’s a good foundation to have

What about a Supercollider/norns meetup group for Chicago? I have modified a few examples from the docs for my own purposes but would love to learn more about all of it.

full disclosure I started learning supercollider about a week ago hopefully I’m not coming off like an expert ovr here

always down to talk music code stuff in general tho - I’ve spent far too much of my last two years wading through max/msp spaghetti + @dan_derks is a certified norns & max for live expert. a THING could certainly be arranged

An SC meetup would be rad. I’ve been dabbling in SC for years so I have a pretty decent understanding of it. I don’t really have time to do any sort of formal training but I’m happy to help people figure out the basics in small bursts. There’s also a slack (scsynth.slack.com) that has a bunch of really experience SC devs and maintainers, that might be a good starting place!

Count me in for any January meetup. Even just to see what people have been doing in person would tickle the brain.

Nice. Derek (Formants) is a good dude, we’ve played several shows together.

I’m excited (and maybe a little anxious) to be playing on a bill with a bunch of people I don’t know!

New (awesome) record store alert!

The shop is called Interstellar Space and it’s located in Ravenswood (near the intersection of Montrose and Damen/next to Slim’s). They specialize in jazz, avant-garde, 20th century classical, new age, funk and world music. Definitely worth a trip.

Hi,
Just letting y’all know about another show I’m playing Friday, at Cafe Mustache.

Long standing Chicago music vet Dan Schiender has these monthly variety shows, where his group Singleman Affair does a residency an he invites a variety of people to play. I’ll be doing my duo called Levinson/Mahlmeister and we’ll be doing a mostly modular set. Also on the bill are Matt Clark (Joan of Arc), Jessica Mance, Solt (Featuring Paul Giallorenzo, Michael Hartman, Neil Jendon) and Casey Larwood.

Starts at 9pm.

yes yes yes! many thanks for sharing these!

everyone, nolan’s film screening is the first of many to come! so those who are fans of experimental moving image, keep your eyes peeled. this inaugural screening will be a collection of nolan’s solo work all projected on 16mm. these are all so unbelievably beautiful, and I cannot wait.

also: this hasn’t been announced on other vessels of the internet, but, there is going to be a sound performance to accompany “webmaking” on the night of the opening (utilizing cheat codes by @dan_derks!). I am going to use elements of the exhibition to generate a score. I hope to see some lines folks at the opening!

Hey There!
Playing a show with my duo, Levinson/Mahlmeister, at Comfort Station on March 12th.

We’re working two specific pieces for this show that are centered more around a more traditional rock setup (ie not just jamming on da modular the whole time). I’ll be playing guitar and modular, doing some looping and processing. Jamie is playing a full drum kit with a small modular setup as well. Looking forward to trying some new stuff, and hope to see you there if you can make it!

I will be having a release show 9/25 at the hideout online for my project, restroy featuring Avreeayl Ra, Mabel Kwan, Paul Giallorenzo, Kevin Davis, James Davis, and myself. We will be streaming studio footage of the day we recorded. This record is the hardest I’ve ever worked on anything. I am happy to be done and finally share it with some people.

Space-Saver (Travis Thatcher & Steve Snider) are doing an opening set. Travis also makes synths and music under the moniker Voice of Saturn. I’m looking forward to hearing them very much.
