I think the pieces are in place to make sure that happens.

What are the next steps with the Code of Conduct?

thanks everyone for continuing to push the conversation forward and rounding out necessary elements of accountability + community development. folding in suggestions, here’s the proposed revision:

lines is a space that embraces civil dialogue, which can sometimes challenge biases through discussion and analysis. Diversity of thought is valued and encouraged.

Empathy is the core of communication on lines. Disagreement can remain healthy if each member: a) assumes positive intent and b) genuinely seeks to understand others.

Flagging is a tool for members to help moderators identify communication that does not exhibit empathy. To foster the growth of our community’s culture, all members should be held to a clear system of accountability.

When a post is flagged for incivility, a moderator will review it:

  • If the moderator agrees, they will contact the flagged member and share the community’s feedback. Members are not punished for their ideas or opinions, but they are held accountable for their presentation. The mod will encourage a revision of the post or other necessary action.
  • If the moderator disagrees, they will share their review with the flagging member to help guide good discourse.

If the flagged member receives additional related flags:

  • Their ability to post will be temporarily revoked.
  • A moderator will be available to discuss their actions and community impact.
  • If they express interest in remaining a contributing member of the lines community, they will be re-granted posting privileges after one week.

If, upon their return, the member does not demonstrate growth toward more empathetic communication (weighed by additional flags or other measures), this will be grounds for account termination.

lines is an inclusive community. Its moderators are committed to the respectful treatment of all community members. Hate speech or other targeted aggression is not tolerated.

Unless there are major flaws / requests that have not yet been voiced, I’d like to wrap up the community revision stage in the coming week and bring it back to the mods to make the necessary structural changes.

edit: I keep thinking about @ht73’s very on-point post:

I don’t have a great way to accomplish this without the big ole list, which is understandably not how the majority would like to proceed. The feedback I would be most interested in hearing is a clean, terse way to include this sentiment, if it is unmet by “lines is an inclusive community. Its moderators are committed to the respectful treatment of all community members. Hate speech or other targeted aggression is not tolerated.”

If language is too “clean and terse”, it loses its power to evoke, to perform, to welcome, to gather. I think a “big ole list”, in other words, is fine, as long as it adequately covers the specific concern(s) that brought things to this point. Personally, I think the following is close enough, and was a bit sorry to see it removed:

By “close enough”, I mean that it seems to cover what @zebra stated so well:

It will never be complete or universal, but universality was and is never the point. And is not possible anyway: even a word like “inclusiveness” always has a meaning that is worked out only in the doing, in the discourse and mutual involvements that constitute a community.

What is the point, is a very specific and recent history, part of which we (unfortunately) saw here even if for a brief moment, and part of which arises continually and continually goes unchecked on other electronic music forums. If a completely different kind of situation arises then the “big ole list” can be amended. Hopefully we never reach that point!

Hope this helps, and I do appreciate your tremendous efforts to this end!

Brevity is the soul of wit. If we are to have such a thing, let it be as brief as possible.

Agreed, I think specificity is needed in the case.

Either way it goes, I thank all of the mods for the efforts towards this and the open process of the creation.

Whats the latest on this? I wanted to dm somebody our code of conduct but i know some things are in flux…

Sorry if this should be obvious but what are the rules for creating new topics? I’ve done a couple after failing to find what I was looking for elsewhere. The moderators seem pretty on the spot about moving things around as needed, but I don’t want to create needless work…

Thanks.

If a search doesnt yield results with a relevant topic to add to…feel free to start one

Search isnt perfect but it’s better some forum software i’ve encountered elsewhere. Sometimes i miss seeing topics where i couldve continued ongoing conversation rather than starting a new one

But dont hold back if you want to contribute

Mods or other users will hint whether you need to dial it back and post less

I’ve found this puzzling too. Did you start that thread about recordings that feature monome/Mannequins prominently? I think it later got moved into the firehose thread ‘Latest tracks’. That categorization wiped out the original meaning of the thread and there weren’t any exactly like that.

Yes that was me.

I was curious about the relocation but I figured that there must be an order I don’t grok yet…

Talk to the mods (use the flag feature to do so) when you don’t understand what’s happening. You couldn’t ask for a nicer bunch of folks to discuss things with, so don’t be scared. They make mistakes on occasion, but they won’t know that unless we engage.

I was wondering what the status of the CoC is, as I can’t seem to find it? With a (welcome!) influx of new users I think its a great moment to set some expectations?

Happy to help out if help is needed!

Feel free to move or delete this but I wanted to express gratitude for seeing numerous examples of “healing” of potentially bad vibes on various threads in recent days. There is something really special about this place, in the way that people seem to want to go the extra mile to establish friendly understanding and communication.

A good code of conduct can help make explicit the underlying vibe, but seeing the community repeatedly rise to the higher wavelength is a thing of beauty…

Thanks!

I saw this this morning and it seems to embody some of the spirit that makes this community pretty healthy and good…

“I used to prioritize winning arguments over everything else, but then the third period bell rang, and I had to get to class. It’s not just overrated - it literally doesn’t even matter. Only anecdote I know of is to just intentionally practice curiosity towards antagonistic people.”

Here is part of a conversation I’m having with a moderator concerning my flagged posts in this thread.

"Can you delete those posts.I don’t really desire to be flagged where I was discussing extending empathy to people in need of love but are polar opposite to your pov.

I apparently did not violate forum rules. I had no idea that thread was off limits because it caused some people hurt in the past.

I also think that perhaps lines should change its flagging policy.

I can certainly understand bringing a post to a the attention of a moderator. Many forums have a ‘report to moderator feature’ that is not visible publicly, so the member isn’t publicly shamed until the moderator can make a decision on a particular post.

Flagging should not be a passive aggressive tool. It’s a tool that I would never use in any way shape or form.

As members who have been publically shamed (and/or personally attacked) for simply expressing a point of view, they will leave the forum.

You will wind up with a community that is not as inclusive as it pretends to be."

I also replied to you directly, but this deserves to be clarified now that it’s public.

Previous comments

Flags are private. They are not seen by other members. Only the flagging member, the author of the post, and the moderators can see that is it flagged. And any action taken is private until someone chooses to speak about it.

Note
I am revising my reply, because apparently people can see that a post has been flagged, but not for what reason or by whom.

We do not condone public shaming, and have removed many posts because of it.

As I said in my direct message, we are not pretending to be anything. We are a group of humans who want to make a nice place to hang out and have conversations. Being humans, we’re fallible and imperfect, so we try our best but sometimes it isn’t quite right the first time. We aim to help foster a community that is inclusive of people who are often excluded from online and in-person communities for various reasons, so sometimes we are a little more heavy handed with moderation than other forums. But it’s always a discussion and with the best intentions, and done in good faith.

I saw that both of @Funch’s posts were flagged, so you may wish to research this further.

Hm. That’s concerning. In the Discourse docs it says that flags are private, as they should be until they are dealt with.
