thanks everybody for sharing such warm thoughts, kind words, and mountains of energy toward the stream last weekend.

the script is nearly ready to beta, which will be posted here as soon as I can. the twitch session will be the only documentation, as the last hurdle is revising the manual, but i think we covered nearly everything (some easter eggs await tho).

@Nornsrulez, apologies for any miscommunication – the stream was to practice talking about the changes + to honestly make sure the features were on the right track. sorry to get your hopes up! the stream did wonders for shortening the timeline

@karst, excellent call – i noticed it but totally forgot to note it. i’ll be sure to roll the feedback into the release candidate :revolving_hearts:

arc + arps doin’ their thing (with added aalto):

Thank you for all the hard work, and taking the time to demo things, had a blast and can’t wait for 2.0!

session 4: new delay system + beta release // Sun Aug 16, 11-12:15p EDT

spent a bit of time over these past few weeks on this as the final cheat codes 2 feature. i don’t think i’ll ever stop being amazed by ezra’s work on softcut. you can reconfigure it into anything, it’s so super inspiring.

here’s a weird lil capture, first with “dry” audio and then a jam on the new delay system in “free” mode, which gives us some resonator / formant / bitcrush / weird reverb territory. bonkers fun:

here’s using the “clocked” mode as a recording mechanism for clean but weird drum loops + some new arp tricks:

during the stream, I’ll cover the new delay-centric grid interface as well as some intentional and accidental strategies for working with it. then, the beta will be released!

sample is the same one from the video session!

Totally floored by your work on cheat codes, Dan. It is the gift that keeps on giving. Thank you for this incredible script, and your constant dedication to it.

Dam that’s 5am in my timezone :frowning: Can i rewatch it through twitch?

When is this being released?

So, is this the Clouds 2 we were all waiting for?

Jokes aside, that thing alone may deserve its own script.
Don’t you think?

thanks all!

yes! it’ll be left up for at least a month

cheat codes 2 will be released to the maiden package manager on August 30th after it receives two weeks of public beta testing, starting August 16th – there are a ton of moving parts that I don’t feel comfortable formally releasing without some external testing. thanks for the patience + enthusiasm!

i’ll make it so you can run external audio in and just engage with that one facet, but I also think a lot of the delay features will also make their way into cranes at some point

So hype. Seriously, weekend coding livestreams and tutorials have been one of my favorite parts of the quarantine age. Something to look forward to, a place to learn, and community.

:warning:

this is beta software which is not yet fully documented, but is 90% working as intended. I’m hoping that a few folks who have watched the last two streams and are comfortable with the first version of cheat codes will be willing to test the system for the next week or so, as I ready an August 30th public release documentation for a mid-September release.

please back up your dust > code > cheat_codes folder if you wish to retain any saved work from cheat codes 1. at this point, collections are not compatible across the two versions and if you save a cheat codes 2 collection over where you saved a cheat codes 1 collection, the data will not be recoverable.

for reference, here’s the video of the new features stream from three weeks ago. that will be your best guide for testing – i’d recommend going through and testing each of the features as they’re discussed. and then the video from today’s stream will remain up on twitch for delay testing! eeee!

the only thing that's DEFINITELY different is the grid arp workflow.
  • the arp button is the button to the left of the 2nd zilchmo row
  • press it one to turn on the arpeggiator (doesn’t matter what screen you’re on)
  • hold some grid keys down and they’ll arpeggiate
  • release them and they’ll stop
  • hold some grid keys and press the arp button again
  • release them and they’ll hold
  • press the arp button again and the arp will pause
  • press the arp button again and the arp will play
  • hold alt (either local or global) and press the arp button to clear the arp

since beta issues are going to be ephemeral, i’d love for this process to take place on the cheat codes 2 github repo: https://github.com/dndrks/cheat_codes2-beta. i definitely don’t have docs in place yet, but for folks who have watched the last two streams, you should be in a totally good zone to explore and start getting a sense for what seems fun / weird / wrong. if that’s totally inaccessible, let me know and we can start a thread – but i think it’d be awesome to centralize the convo in a code-focused space, so for now let’s assume that we’ll chat there!

when submitting an issue, please feel free to use any combo of the labels depending on the situation.

i super appreciate everybody’s positivity and energy, but please don’t feel pressured to jump onto the testing train if you aren’t totally comfortable with this process. the public release is super soon

i legitimately never thought this would happen. i cannot thank y’all enough :revolving_hearts:

I was just making some OP-1 loops today in hopes of having some time to test this! Thanks @dan_derks; the random and arp functions, along with decoupled arc modes (for a decouple rotary encoder  ) are totally up my alley right now!

Thanks for all the hard work.

Hey Dan
I’m continually amazed by your work with Cheat Codes :yellow_heart:

First hour of testing and I’m getting totally lost with the ARP + Delay - Wow this is deep!!

Not running into problems so far - will report if I find anything

A snippet with arps, clocked delay and momentary button gestures :headphones:

Couldn’t stop by yesterday so just finished with the demo now.

It’s really impressive how CC can be approached in so many different ways now, there’s a CC for all and it doesn’t have to be the same.
I don’t know how much of CC 2 will be open for OSC (I’ll help with the layouts) but I am convinced now to get a Grid with the addition of the delay layout, so many possibilities. I love the shimmery bitcrush effect.

Thank you once again Dan for the amazing work!

So I’m building up my second Norns…

wowowow, really appreciate all the quick + positive engagement!! @ypxkap submitted a super-helpful crash report which led to some crucial changes that should heighten the overall “feel free to go absolutely nuts without worrying about system hangs” threshold

noticed a few more bugs and wishlist items this morning, which are now logged.

re: OSC, really hoping to expose the hooks for the new features, but will likely have to be a point-release behind 2.0 – there is a ton of baked in MIDI support, though, including controls specific to OP-Z. details to follow! (@CarlosUnch, would love to work together on TouchOSC templates!)

super thankful for everyone’s the kindness + energy. holy cow, hans…that is such a gorgeous capture, thank you so much for sharing it! i’m really stoked on how quickly you embraced the new delay controls :revolving_hearts:
