Is anyone else experiencing issues with static noise when turning the Survey knob? If you patch audio through it and start turning it the issue is particularly audible (e.g. when using the module as a crossfader). It started about a month ago for me, and it seems to just be getting worse with time. I tried getting rid of potential grime by rapidly turning the knob, but it didnā€™t really do anything. Any idea?

I think this is inherent to the design of the module. Plugging a dummy cable into slope(in) should make it better. Iā€™ve found that plugging dummy cables into left(in) and right(in) can also help sometimes.

The pot can get dirty and scratchy over time. Iā€™d shoot mannequins an email. It is a fairly straightforward part swap, but the direct replacement is not always easy to find, I think mannequins has them made to order in large batches. Also, doing the repair yourself is very possible but I assume no responsibility for suggesting itā€¦

I just replaced a dirty potentiometer on my Three Sisters and this is the pot I used: https://www.thonk.co.uk/shop/alpha-9mm-pots-dshaft/ (B10K - D shaft - Alpha Vertical 9mm Potentiometer).

Thats funny mine has just started to do a similar thing, I have found that its more noticable when i first turn my system on after I move the knob abit it seems to goā€¦ Was going to leave it to see if it was just some grime or somthing and if it would clean itself up. Possibly wishful thinking, do you guys think this will only get worse over time? I have seen some videos of people spraying contact cleaner into pots on guitar amps to clean up the crackle, is this worth trying?

Mouser was out-of-stock when I checked recently, but Thonk seems to have them in-stock. I ordered ~20 a couple weeks ago and they just arrived.

I might try something like the Amazon link below and shoot a bit of air in the module, Iā€™ve been meaning to get one anyway just to clean my front panels in the narrow areas. I donā€™t know if itā€™ll be much help but Iā€™ll let you know how it goes.
In the meantime Iā€™ve contacted Mannequins, il share my findings whenever I get a reply.

I ended up getting this on a recommendation from a photographer friend whoā€™s also into Eurorack and, while it did nothing at all to help with my Cold Mac, it turns out itā€™s a great tool to clean up dust on your panels :slight_smile: I heard back from Whimsical Raps: turns out my knob needs a replacement, so Iā€™ll have to send it in for repair unfortunately.

Ah nice thank you for the recommendation!! I defintly need something for dusting in tight spots even if itā€™s not going to help my cold mac. Ah no, I thought it may be the case, mine doesnā€™t look as though its improving either so looks like I will also have to send Whimsical Raps an email. Hi hijacking this comment with a noob question Lol, but is it possible to use cold Mac as a standard vca as in patch a envelope into it to control Adsr of a vco? Considering getting one for my small system.

Yes! You can use it as a VCA.
You could look at COLD MAC: A Technical Map which is a great guide or this thread which has lots of neat things you can do with it.

It should! I am planning on replacing a pot on my Cold Mac and AFAICT it uses the same pot as Three Sisters. I think all of the Mannequins pots are B10K: https://www.whimsicalraps.com/pages/support-faq#scratchy-pot

Iā€™m not sure if anyone has posted this patch yet, but I just stumbled on this oscillator patch. Seems to only like a pretty narrow, farty frequency range. The frequency changes with the knob and is only audible from about 10:30 to 1:00.

  • OR to SURVEY
  • MAC to OR 1
  • Listen to CREASE

Could be specific to my case, too, if itā€™s picking up some noise from somewhere.

Edit: Just tested, and as I suspected, this also works using AND1 in with AND out. This also gives a slightly wider pitch range, and in this case the knob enables sound from noon up.

Thereā€™s actually all sorts of similar patches, I think the significant part is getting CREASE involved in some kind of logic loop. Plugging into OR1 to start is handy because itā€™s normalled to AND1.

I donā€™t know why but Iā€™m really into these ā€œwrongā€ sounds. Coming out of a utility, theyā€™re that much tastier.

can a comparator be macā€™d ?

i.e. +5v when a signal is higher than another signal, 0v when low ? or any other way to get gates out of continuous signals ?
