I’m back at work full-time, so my ability to develop for norns has sadly cratered. If someone is interested in creating a sample-focused spin-off, I’d say go for it!

Loading files into softcut buffers is pretty straight forward. I will have a poke around, and send you a PR if it comes to anything. :slight_smile:

i saw the grid suggestion above…
maybe also an arc control for sample rate and verb for each track or maybe each pair of arc knobs could move start and end points for each track?

@GoneCaving recently submitted a PR for arcify support built directly into Compass! Going to get that merged, along with the tweak above, in the next day or so.

Just had a great time using Compass in conjunction with a VCV Rack ambient patch I’ve been playing with. There’s a generative left and right hand piano, some background recorded rain and an Aalto bass in there to round out the spectrum. All gate and timing triggers are generated by the meadowphysics module in VCV Rack.

This patch is such a joy to just “groove” with. Don’t know if anybody needs 10 minutes of what I made, but dammed if it isn’t just a joy to create!

v1.1 released!

  • REQUIRES LATEST FIRMWARE: 190930
  • Local copy of arcify is included for arc control (!) thanks to @GoneCaving :bowing_man:
  • Panning conforms to new softcut range (-1 to 1)
  • Panning commands introduced: ( and ) for random pan positions (L and R). An associated Pan slew param is available to smoooooth out this stereo motion.

A brief note on sample-loading:

I’ve received a few requests for adding sample loading to Compass, which is an awesome idea. @Justmat stepped up to the plate as he so often does and got the basic functionality down, but then encountered external issues and complexities that would make this feature not as reliable or as tightly integrated as we’d hoped.

Given this, my view is that sample loading is a terrific idea, but one that would best reside in a spin-off script. I’m sadly short on time to make this happen, so if anyone wants to take the concept and chip away, I say go for it :slight_smile:

FYI: Got some basic crow interactivity baked into Compass and it’s sounding/feeling pretty good! Need to get a bit more testing done, but should have a new version posted in the next few days.

I am curious, is that a bit of a ‘diminishing return’ on that number of Norns? Do you have grids to compliment some of them? Or do you daisy chain a grip of effects?

Well, I only have one Norns at the moment. And I was exaggerating my ambition…but only a little bit. In reality, I would love to have three, and will likely build a couple in order to get there. I have one grid, and will likely keep it that way. The scripts that I use to re-amp and mangle samples (including Compass) don’t need a grid. Loosely speaking, I’d love to have one for generative purposes and sequencing, and two for interpreting.

That’s basically my plan. Got 2 FATES coming and will probably get in on a Norns DAC just for fun. It’s all fun stuff. I actually have 2 grids. Those are extremely valuable in my mind.
