A few disclaimers:

  • I started actually working on a beat from scratch only near the end so you can scan thru the last 30mins to hear how that went
  • Never tried screencasting from ableton and left a side of the app cropped…sorry
  • The bulk of the time was a mixture of released and unreleased music with live q+a by those in the chat
  • Vocals sound different in the recording than they did for me in realtime so it was quite difficult to adjust blind

I’ll leave it up for 72hrs for those of you who want to listen but be forewarned, it’s not perfect

However the session at the end did yield a usable gem so i’m glad i did this despite the challenges. All of this is a learning experience

here’s what i made with the loop before falling asleep…will definitely sharpen it into a gem but it’s kinda dope already

enjoy!

enjoyable stream! cool watching you work by just adjusting loop points and resampling around a small loose window, had never thought of using arrangement view that way. lots to think about, thank you

bun added some synth to the concentrics 5 bonus track “hadassah/beleza”

played parts of em during my LR set as tribute to @andrew and fumitake (some of my biggest influences)

Hey @glia ! Bringing this thread back to life with a question for you about process. Listening to your new album (vii) and the other releases in this series, I’m first and foremost very impressed by the sound and the quality of your productions, but also inspired and intrigued to challenge myself into more rhythmic territories :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

  • kicks: I’m amazed by how ‘clean’ your kicks sound. I don’t mean clean-sounding (they can be grainy, pitched, effected etc) but they always sit sooo good in the space. Are you recording and treating them seperately from the other parts? I guess compression plays a part? How about gates? Sidechaining?

this is a great question!

Yes compression is used liberally but no, i don’t usually think i’m processing the kicks apart from the other sounds. Usually i tune sounds/textures to each other (by ear not to a scale) and then make a pattern.

Destructive editing and resampling comes next. I don’t usually make edits or tweaks on just one sound in isolation. But I know some tricks to get the kick where i want it w/o sacrificing the whole track.

Since i care more about drums & kicks than melodies, if i cant find an ideal solution i’ll usually lean toward spotlighting the kick over something else

I was gonna say no but it probably depends on the track. Some experiments include transient shaping or gate method #1 shown by @pATCHES here

but, again never use this technique alone, usually on a whole track or layer before stacking/flattening

Thanks!

This is interesting!
