finding myself spending more time in cranes than anywhere else in norns right now. looking forward to seeing what you’ll cook up next @dan_derks.

Just wanna chime in to express my gratitude for this script too. Gets lots of use here and the results have found their way in to a few finished tracks now :muscle:
(BTW I also only appear to get the speed slew applied to voice one…)

thank you all for the very lovely examples of how cranes has made it into your music :revolving_hearts:
(@rbxbx, I expect some wild audio artifacts from ya soon  )

there is a “feature” that places a permanent slew on voice 1 dependent on a combo of engaging the pitch wiggle + the playback speed. it’ll either be dramatic or barely noticeable, but it will persist throughout the session. I was going to fix it, but then it made for too many delightful moments for others that it’s now a mainstay

please keep sharing!

Hey folks- how are you using the “midi ctrl speed voice x” param? Enlighten me. :hugs:

i think i may have fixed my issues.
cranes.lua (24.1 KB)
i changed:
77 audio.level_cut(1) to audio.level_cut(0.5)
now incoming levels are matching outgoing levels. i saw this in the mlr thread from @louis

84 softcut.pan(1, 0.7) to softcut.pan(1, 1.0)
85 softcut.pan(2, 0.3) to softcut.pan(2, 0.0)
167 params:set(“pan_1”, 0.7) tp params:set(“pan_1”, 1.0)
170 params:set(“pan_2”, 0.3) to params:set(“pan_2”, 0.0)
this hard pans the left and right imputes so there is no bleed and helps with incoming levels matching outgoing.

Working with trans a little more while using a grid i was wondering if would be possible to both the settings fro track one and 2 visible at the same time and keep the button to toggle between them?

Unfortunately the recording of the set didn’t come out great, but someone captured a bit of video

you can kind of hear the pitched/reversed/cranes’d vox at the end

I really love cranes and will most likely use it for a gig next week, I am still struggling a bit with levels though.

I wonder if that what @robotboot does via the script changes is what you can also achieve by setting the general mix for cut to 50% in the main settings of Norns?

Also, I am a bit confused by the “level of out voice”… when I map this parameter the range is 0-5 and it seems to be quite louder than the default 1.0
I am not sure if this is an oversight or intended.
I guess I could change this in the lua file by adjusting the ranges for vol_1 and vol_2 to 0,1 instead 0,5?
(This is just me reverse engineering, I do not have a real clue about lua, softcut or supercollider…)

I tryed for a long time to figure out levels that would make it be level input output not nothing seemed to work till I changed the script. With it changed you just put all the levels to 100 and it just works. I also know nothing about the scripts and mostly came across someone else recommending that in another thread.

excited to hear what you do with it! please share any recordings

yes! I’m unsure when along the line things got funky (has this always been a problem for folks, or just recently?), but the changes that @robotboot posted above can definitely be achieved with also manually adjusting the params. once I’m back to my norns I can test and push a new version out that has these changes.

intended, but perhaps more useful for me than others. I find that I really like driving up the volume of bits playing at 0.25x and finding those “in-between-notes” moments where decays are still lightly ringing. having super high headroom helps me achieve some specific goals, but you could definitely just change the ranges in lines 157 and 160 of the script @robotboot posted above

thanks all for digging in + helping each other out! humbled that cranes is a part of your work :revolving_hearts:

Hey Dan!
I’m still getting my feet wet with norns and cranes, but my experience so far has been similar. I’ll be monitoring my source at a reasonable volume, record into cranes and ends up being close to double the volume when listening back. I’ll have to try the fixes mentioned above to see if that helps.

Thanks for confirming! Totally can see the usefulness for the levels having the greater range, I just changed them to 1 and now I think that is tad too small
I hopefully will record something during the show or shortly before and will post a link.

i built a fates last week and have been LOVING cranes. i honestly haven’t spent much time with any other scripts cuz i keep coming back to cranes. it’s beautiful and simple and so much fun. thank you for making such a lovely tool!

i have a couple questions/requests: i was wondering if it will ever be possible to save both buffers so that they can be recalled/loaded at another time, similar to how the reels script does it? i find myself coming up with some really awesome stuff while using cranes and wishing that i could just recall my whole “session” (params + populated buffers) at another time. i know you can save presets of all the params, but i would be ecstatic if it were possible to also save each buffer as an audio file to recall at a later time. or even be able to load audio files into cranes that may have been recorded elsewhere.

thanks for reading and for all of your hard work on this. it’s proving to be something of a game changer for my whole setup honestly.

ben, thank you for the kind words! it really means so much, super warming to read :hugs:

I am currently working on a cranes successor which sorta provides shortcuts to the ways which I find I use cranes most, but through that I have found some things I’d like to bring to cranes proper. I’ll definitely build these in, but it will be a bit of time (like a month?) before I can bring focus back to cranes – though, adding these functions yourself (or in collaboration) would also be an awesome intro to modifying scripts

either way, so glad you’re feeling engaged both by norns and cranes. excited to hear what you do with it!

first if all, just want to say this is a wonderful script!
i was playing with cranes last night, and recorded to DAW, i noticed, it seems i can’t get the output to pan left and right.
when i set the pan in param page, pan 0.0 is in center, moving toward 1.0 is hard right. but can’t move it to the left.
am i missing something obvious?

thanks.

no, I just haven’t updated the script to take advantage of the new softcut panning. totally my fault! brb, lemme fix.

oh wow very fast response! no worries, and thank you for the amazing work, really appreciate it :pray:t4::pray:t4::pray:t4:

no no, totally easy (in theory) to fix and happy to do it (finally)! can you give this version a whirl and lmk?

also, thank you for the kind words :revolving_hearts::revolving_hearts: so glad cranes has made its way into your toolkit!

(edit: woooooof, I have learned a lot since making cranes. excited to clean this up proper.)

it worked! yeaay thanks so much Dan!

EDIT : after trying it a few minutes, i noticed, on param page
pan voice 1, can only be set either -1.0 for hard left or 0.0 for center (no increment in between -0.1 to -0.9). same also in pan voice 2, only 1.0 (hard right) or 0.0. is it possible to have the pan position somewhere in between? not just hard left and hard right?
also is it possible for voice 1 to cross to the right side and voice 2 to the left side? right now voice 1 only center or left, voice 2 center or right.

also the KEY3 option on param page, can only be set to 0.0, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, no .5 increment (for example 0.5, 1.5, etc.)

thank you!

I’ve been using Cranes a LOT during the last months (both live and in studio work), and I find it to be especially brilliant in creating smudgy textures. Here’s a recent sketch on it:

One minor problem which I’ve recently had is that I messed up the input settings at some point, so when I stop recording and activate playback the sound is way louder than during monitoring… have to tweak that for good values at some point!
