For anyone in London, I’ll be playing a set at the upcoming CV FREQS in a couple of weeks. My set will be Teletype and Just Type focused
The event is on Saturday 17th February and runs from 11AM - 6.30PM at the iklectik art gallery cafe in London (Lambeth). It’s a modular meet so feel free to bring along your synth and there with performances towards the end from myself, AJFourier and Electret.
Very interested to see your set It’s going to be great!
My setup is a bit messy at the moment. It’s going to be a mix of Digitakt and modular going through the laptop. I also just got a Lyra 8 that should take part of the show, if I manage to learn enough of it before the date.
Opens on the 17th of this month. On 22nd I play samples and Ableton nonsense in Arcadio (latin electro skronk), and a drone solo on April 5th. Info in photo below!
I went to the last one. The vibe was strange - parts of it made me feel quite disgusted by the whole modular synth scene. It was very apparent that the industry is sustained by people who enjoy buying expensive things. The experience made me question my own interests in music tech.
On the other hand there were some really fascinating talks, one about the shared history of synthesisers and military technology was especially good - and it was nice to see so many people with a shared love of making weird noises.
yeah… sort of imagining a good/ bad split - but obviously going open minded. Happy to look at expensive gear and their owners. And dont get me started on the beards…
One decent conversation and a chance to hear something interesting and its obviously worthwhile.
Hey @jwhiles I had a similar experience of ups and downs, on the downside it feels like a sports car convention or something with loads of pristine expensive gear, on the upside everyone I spoke to was interesting, engaged and apart from one or two people really seemed to be there to share an interest rather than bolstering egos etc. The generosity involved in organising it and bringing all that stuff was also pretty amazing. Got to meet some makers too and have good geeky chats about music and process. But yes, I’ve always got this conflict and am constantly questioning my relationship with music tech, it’s like magic when your using it but it’s also a lot of pressure when you’re not. The idea of a studio stuffed with gear turns my stomach but that’s something for another thread I guess. Be good to say hello if you make it there.
