I’m seeing a lot of confusion in this thread about digital vs. analog as opposed to local vs. remote storage. These are two different discussions. (As is “physical” media vs. … something else, which isn’t really a thing since all storage is ultimately on physical media, just not necessarily in a location you control and with varying tradeoffs in terms of reliability and error tolerance/recoverability.)

CERN is most assuredly using a digital tape archive system, which is not uncommon for long-term storage.
