hiya first post  found out about this forum from over on the Elektron forums. looks like a nice place ~

I quite liked this interview with John Frusciante… he does a take two on the main idea here coz he’s kinda rambling… but it’s a nice interview I think that gets into the apparatus behind music which is basically the whole physical universe, from the air to waveforms being transduced by microphones and electrical current being transformed into memories and ideas in the mind…

In art, music, any creative art form, I’ve always gone by a very simple definition in determination whether it’s is in fact part of the aforementioned category: what is the artist’s or listener’s intent or perception. Do you intend or perceive it be music? Then it is. Done. Artists have been challenging this for quite some time and it keeps popping up again, look at Duchamp and John Cage and the dude with the banana taped to the wall.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone says, ‘that’s not music’, when the music doesn’t fit into their preconceived notions of what music should sound like to them. That annoys the shit of me. Just because a sound doesn’t fit in classical western harmony it doesn’t make unmusical.

To my there’s no reason at this point to argue about what is or isn’t music but you can certainly have opinions about what is good or not based on intent or perception.
