I have a cooper Generation Loss pedal which I love, and was mentioned elsewhere, but I don’t think anyone’s talked about the Strymon Volante yet which actually has a disintegration loop setting that’s very accurate. You go into the sound on sound loop mode, record your loop, and then set wow flutter, tape age, and tone of the repeats. At some settings, the loop degrades after a couple of passes and at others, I’ve made it last almost an hour.

^ This. Lucier’s a huge influence on areas of my practice, and I’ve used the IASIAR process of resonance and constructive interference so many times! It’s the process that keeps on giving, since resonance (along with parameters of fidelity, amplification, equalisation) has so much nuance and unpredictability.

A slight tangent, perhaps, but I’ve been playing with a long have version of this using an iPhone FM transmitter and an old Walkman with a built-in radio. I play the loop through the iPhone and then re-record it into my computer via the Walkman radio. I’ve played with different methods of doing it, including send the output of the Walkman radio into a dictaphone before sending it into the computer and it works well. Obviously you can send it back out from the dictaphone though the iPhone/transmitter as many times as you like and it offers interesting effects. Using unreliable tapes in the dictaphone is an interesting idea too - I need to try that.

On a side note, I just recently got Reaktor and it’s great to see @Ithacus & @trickyflemming discussing ensembles in this context. Is there a dedicated Reaktor thread that I’ve somehow missed?

(Side note 2: Hainbach’s latest (3rd, I believe) disintegration loops video is available to watch now and is incredible)

thought of something simple for deteriorating loops:
add random amounts of DC offset(keep signal within range with soft-clipped distortion or limiting of some kind) to each re-recording… i know it’s not as good as tape or analog, but just had to try it in Max

Ha, I bought one of those FM-radio transmitters a few years ago hoping for lofi-goodness. I gave up on it after a few minutes, as I recall because it sounded too good. Probably too early. What happens if you increase the physical distance between the transmittor and receiver. It should probably introduce interesting artifacts. Maybe you can disturb the signal in some way?

I need to look into this again. Btw, the SP-303 vinyl simulator can be a way to add extra texture (wow, flutter) as well.

I get different results depending on a few factors - which FM frequency I use, how far away the transmitter is from the receiver, what objects I use to try to interfere with the signal etc. Also unreliable signal paths are fun. I got a clock radio and close-mic’d the speaker on that instead of taking a direct signal into the computer. Using the same method for tape but using the dictaphone microphone is handy too. It all depends how poor you want it to sound (but yes you do have to work at it because they’re surprisingly quite good!)

Thanks, these are a great place to start! The depth year angle is more or less exactly why I bought it, to be honest - I figured that it would be able to provide me with the means to create things I needed (/gearlusted after) and therefore would offer some GAS insulation. Also the Space Echo emulation and Cloudlab ensembles are (to me) arguably worth the purchase alone!

I had avoided starting a new thread because I got the feeling most people were M4L users as Reaktor hadn’t been mentioned often but I shall start one up forthwith :slightly_smiling_face:

I feel like I gave up on the Volante too quickly. I got one when it came out, but ended up swapping it out for a Meris Polymoon. Both are cool, but the Volante has all of these awesome extra features, plus it sounds really good…

a take on a disintegration loop…

it’s a combo of a Volante on SOS mode going through a OTO BOUM with the gate turned on. If you very carefully set your levels you can get it so that the gating effect starts snatching snippets of quiet audio out of the loop as it slowly thins out and quiets through the Volante re-recording the loop.

I suspect this would also be interesting and possibly better if I put the reverb before the gate.

I’ve been messing up with my Morphagene looper and I recorded a short piano loop that reminded me of William Basinski’s The Disintegration Loops and then I went further making a patch and full track eventually. Here’s the full track I’ve made with some additional noises and a Make Noise DPO drone.
