My disquiet0244 submission was created using code. I used SoX for audio file manipulation, Node.js for wrapping SoX commands, and Essentia for audio analysis (i.e. - beat detection). My process was as follows:

  • trim tracks to first 20 sec
  • strip beginning silence
  • essentia extraction (i.e. - beat detection)
  • slice tracks at detected beats
  • normalize slices
  • combine slices from all tracks into a single sequence

The result avoids consecutive beats from the same track until the end. The sequence seeks to maintain the relative distribution of each track as the sequence progresses.

Really nice. The different sections make it very evocative of a collage - an assemblage of things that maybe weren’t meant to go together but are made to fit together, and the combination of unlike things is the point.

The piano is really great, too! Love the approach.

Here’s my contribution to the Junto. It’s my first, and it’s a day late. (I work weekends, so finding time isn’t easy.)

I took some of the environmental sounds (zippers, footsteps, chairs)
from “The Station and the Underclass” and “Cloud Scissors” to create the
beat, and then worked from there. There is a strong upward step melody around which everything is built.
You can hear “Zraerza” throughout in the background, but most noticeably at the beginning and end of the
track. A loop of “The Station and the Underclass” plays throughout as well.
