I went on a bit of a William S. Burroughs bender this week, which I found was appropriate to this - mangled samples of What keeps mankind alive galore.

for this track i used the density instrument for voices and some unpredictable
appearence of sounds i don´t know how they got into the track.
a radio channel search file i found in my library.
three instances of darksynth for noises.
and a ableton rack with a choir. as FX there is only a convolution reverb with a small roon and some panning.

only try to tell the little story:

“Max was pondering the important issue of how petrogylphs differed from hieroglyphs when the radio halted its roll at the very far end of the electronic dial. After a brief silence, the weak signal transmitted indistinct sounds, like whispers, intermingled with an odd chanting that faded in and out like a spectral dirge. Intrigued by this strange combination, and hoping for a broadcast of a lonely Indian powwow, Max turned up the volume, but the higher it went, the softer the voice and chant became, going silent. There was no apparent signal, but the radio scan was still stopped, locked in on something”

I’m not going to finish this in time, but will post as a work in progress. I could always do with twice the amount of time!

This is a composition using elements created through some very basic synthesis processes, lots of ring modulation. The textures are quite static, but hopefully complex. The mix is intended to be minimal, but spatial.

Ok-- here’s my entry. I’ve always viewed the Junto (rightly or wrongly) as a way of learning new stuff. In fact, I often don’t finish the Junto stuff I start because I get endlessly sidetracked by the thing I’m learning, and not focusing on the piece itself. I’ve been teaching myself Max/Msp for a bit now, and took the opportunity to learn/futz with a MIDI fighter via max patch. Together with a monome, I whipped up a quick controller patch-- came up with some spooky sounds, and threw in noise from the HC-TT I bought here. The sounds are from an external synth, as my MSP skills are still fairly weak.

It was recorded live, and I thought it would be neat to share a video of the recording as it happened; so here it is:

This will test the shit out of your subwoofers.

Your song did some weird stuff with my phone, I had to restart it. Probably the ghost of WSB.

The story for this project reminded me slightly of an experience from my youth. My teachers had been pushing the “rock and roll is the devil” agenda pretty hard and one of the reasons they cited were the backwards messages in songs. This had the oppisite effect on me and my middleschool friends and we went about searching for these evil messages.
The Vocal sample here is myself speaking the alleged backwards lyrics in Stairway to Heaven. I processed this with samplr and the music was composed using Korg Gadget.

Hi there
this was an instantly appealing assignment- having a love of noise, horror foley and radiophonic sounds- I recorded a bunch of sounds to create short sharp sounds as well as source for distant chanting and off station(off fullstop) drones.chords notes and impacts–processed and constructed in Metasynth and then Logic -following fairly close structure of the story excerpt

When I was active with Ham Radio I eventually worked all 50 states and about 80 countries while running low power. When a signal would appear from a country where few people were Hams there would be huge competition for contact. Attempting to separate the intended signal from others who were applying thousands of watts of power was a real challenge, but after a while concentration would kick in and the faint Morse Code would dis-join itself from the melee.

This is what I was thinking about while putting together Lost In Crimson, my eyes closed, listening for the specific pitch of the signal I was attempting to extract from the crowd, hoping to hear my call sign in response to my CQ.

I have the same problem. I try new stuff and get sidetracked. I like to research some of the stuff in the project.

Radio for the Damned(disquiet0259)
While this weeks prompt was inspirational, time was again not on my side. I made some recordings of three of my radios; a 1939 RCA Victor(pictured), a 1955 Zenith and an old Grundig short wave. The various recordings were brought into iPulsaret, iDensity, Audioshare and Cubasis. The running of the dials was slightly verbed and signal sounds were slowed. The five tracks were mixed with a cameo whisper reading and I couldn’t resist (think Pow-Wow) throwing in a minimal Patterning beat.

Hi all,

here’s the work for the week.

I searched for sound files on my computer based on some of the keywords of the text. I don’t currently have my FX drive with me, so these are just files that happen to be on the computer from other projects. There’s lots of different radio static, some drones, etc. I added some extra musical elements. The voice is a recording of Sonya’s final monologue in Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya” that I ran through multiple levels of delay. I’m not sure where the protest recording is from, but I like how it floats in.
Overall this was pretty quick, and I’m very tired… I wish I could have spent more time on this, but alas it’s a busy week.

This starts with my son playing a cord or two on his new Ukalele.
Then there are some samples from a song in Mardarin from a Taiwanese group. The name of the album was OAA, I can’t really find it anywhere, but I do have a CD of it.

Here are the words in pinyin with English translation.

Wo de jiaxiang zai Naruwan
Congqian shihou shi yijia ren
Xianzai hai shi yijiaren
Shan lianzhe tian
Tian lianzhe hai
Xin lianzhi xin
Yiqi hui dao da ziran

My hometown is Naruwan
In the past we were one family
We are still one family
Mountain touches sky
Sky touches sea
Heart touches heart
Lets return to nature together
