Radio for the Damned(disquiet0259)
While this weeks prompt was inspirational, time was again not on my side. I made some recordings of three of my radios; a 1939 RCA Victor(pictured), a 1955 Zenith and an old Grundig short wave. The various recordings were brought into iPulsaret, iDensity, Audioshare and Cubasis. The running of the dials was slightly verbed and signal sounds were slowed. The five tracks were mixed with a cameo whisper reading and I couldn’t resist (think Pow-Wow) throwing in a minimal Patterning beat.

Hi all,

here’s the work for the week.

I searched for sound files on my computer based on some of the keywords of the text. I don’t currently have my FX drive with me, so these are just files that happen to be on the computer from other projects. There’s lots of different radio static, some drones, etc. I added some extra musical elements. The voice is a recording of Sonya’s final monologue in Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya” that I ran through multiple levels of delay. I’m not sure where the protest recording is from, but I like how it floats in.
Overall this was pretty quick, and I’m very tired… I wish I could have spent more time on this, but alas it’s a busy week.

This starts with my son playing a cord or two on his new Ukalele.
Then there are some samples from a song in Mardarin from a Taiwanese group. The name of the album was OAA, I can’t really find it anywhere, but I do have a CD of it.

Here are the words in pinyin with English translation.

Wo de jiaxiang zai Naruwan
Congqian shihou shi yijia ren
Xianzai hai shi yijiaren
Shan lianzhe tian
Tian lianzhe hai
Xin lianzhi xin
Yiqi hui dao da ziran

My hometown is Naruwan
In the past we were one family
We are still one family
Mountain touches sky
Sky touches sea
Heart touches heart
Lets return to nature together

I used Droneo with custom drones plugged into 3 reverbs (Altispace, Amazing Noises Reverb & Kymatica’s AUFX Space for one track, pitched down to 70% original speed.
Next I used some computer generated speech that read out a random liptikl cut up - this was then sliced in Sector… I cut a small pseudo-phrase out and looped this at 1/8th and 1/3rd speed… these were layered with a Mitosynth sequence of two notes that generated a cool knocking noise… all of these were effected by Dedalus and Moebius lab and the usual reverbs.
Next I created two sequences using Soundscaper app… these both used radio noise samples as a base; one sequence was 5 or so minutes the other just over a minute (which was looped to match the final track length).
Next step I recorded me chanting some ‘nonsensical mumbo jumbo’ which was used in the three oscillator slots and effected also…
Final stage was the mixdown and rough mastering of the five tracks… all done in one take with Aum on my iPhone…
Great idea for a project… I really enjoyed this!
Thanks @disquiet

Well, I personally think you had to resist… but you were finally right to surrender.

Resistance is futile… Spent too much time auditioning w/both channels, one channel or no channel and ended up with first instinct.
