I’m new to modular synthesis, and my only true sound source at the moment is an Industrial Music Electronics Hertz Donut MkII. It’s a complex dual oscillator with a lot of cool functions that I love, but it is very noisy and hard to tame. I figured it would be fun to spend 4 minutes using only the Hertz Donut (and a mixer) with no external modulation to make the most obnoxious, offensive and often painful noises I can.

The pun?
The Hertz Donut hurts, don’ it?

The Force Theme meets Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin, and some Wavetable synths. It always struck me as weird that “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough” is all about a mysterious force. Meanwhile, my son has been super into this lovely melody from Star Wars. The connection was too good to pass up. Led Zeppelin doesn’t factor in except that the Levee break sounds really epic at this tempo.

Seeing this weeks Junto email made me both smile and cringe, fun and interesting prompt but I had nothing. Went in search of something suitable and found something fairly quick. Not sure of the originality or success, but here it is.
What do you get when you drop a piano down a mine?
A flat minor…oooooh that’s painful! Now the puns and jokes be flyin’!
Wanted to make a literal soundscape, so began making a bunch of field recordings of things being dropped, rolled, shook and broken. That was the easy part, a harder task came with building multiple notes on three different pianos in Cubasis. I stupidly tried to use all keys on all pianos for a textured and fuller sound, but that confused the midi gods of iPad music making, so I was damned for my attempt. Ultimately made a truce by using sections of keys from each piano. And this was just the intro. The music proper(or improper if you prefer), was played in the key of…you guessed it Ab minor with 3 pianos(Live Grand, Bright, Acoustic), 3 synths(Plastic Sun, SequenceBass, Lost in the Wind) and 1 Choir synth. A song of tribute for a fellow keyed instrument, who could have only fallen so far after rising so high. It’s late and this isn’t getting any funnier. A bunch of effects eq, overdrive, tape delay, Discord4 and Eos2 on a send from most channels and some panning finished it off. So I made the bad pun and even threw in some double, neigh, triple entendre with the title. Lost piano, lost car keys or maybe how this was played…lots of lost keys! :slight_smile:

This week’s junto came from a discussion on Slack, where I wondered aloud what the musical equivalent of a pun is… I am afraid I am still none the wiser, as what i ended up with was a very groanworthy pun involving music - Vivaldi’s famous set of four violin concertos (which are just the first four in a suite of 12, opus 8, known collectively as “The contest of Harmony and Invention” - and I urge you to listen to the rest, they are just as satisfying as the first four that everyone knows!)… The Four Seasons also happens to be a particularly tasty pizza… so I present for your delectation, a little slice of “Pizza Quattro Stagioni”, in which the opening of ‘Spring’ is played pizzicato.
At the risk of turning this into ‘quattro fromaggi’, I used the cheesiest topping I could find - the ‘Pizzagogo’ preset from the Roland D-05, which is instantly recognisable as the one used by Enya on ‘Orinoco Flow’ - which immediately rendered it useless to anyone else, until now.

Needless to say, this is NOT what I had in mind when I was questioning what the musical equivalent of a pun is.

I had actually thought about creating something new using a few motifs from each movement, but I ran out of time and inclination. I got distracted by pizza…

Maybe the game ‘sing one song to the tune of another’ from the long running British radio panel show “I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue” could be considered a musical pun.

"Even to the uninitiated amateur One Song to the Tune of Another will instantly be recognised as an obvious construct, and only complete idiots of the first order of total incompetence would fail to grasp the basics. So just let me run through it again for you.

The song is comprised of two elementary components, the tune and the words. You might imagine the tune to be akin to a shelf of the type commonly found on domestic walls. This is supported by the brackets, or in this case the words. Some shelf units might store household items such as toilet rolls and fire lighters. These are like songs we don’t hear very often. Others are like popular songs we like to enjoy frequently and might display souvenirs such as novelty tea spoons, or coronation mugs are another possibility (although I often wonder who that happy smiling woman is pictured on the 1953 Queen Elizabeth II edition.), given that there is a definite double meaning present - that of the lyrics and the melody, coming as they do from separate sources." A wonderful example is here:

plundered this pun from the simpsons: homer and co’s barbershop quartet ‘the be sharps’. wanted to represent a pun not just linguistically but conceptually, so the idea of something in the music having multiple meanings

I recorded this in the scale of B sharp…so: in C (and In C was last weeks project…tada!)

samples of pads (ceezar, compad, flotter, heima, prodig, syncla, trice) through both iris 2 and protoplasm… guitar fx in podfarm2 and izotope vinyl in there too
