Instead of palindromes I went for the symmetry that brings mirrors and the hypnotic modified symmetry that you get out of mirror superposition or infinity mirrors.
This one’s fretless bass solo (mostly improvisation) and multile real time delay pedals with a wah wah pedal.

Performed by DD on a custom 4 string Sekine fretless bass (build circa 1984)

Hi all. I like this project! I made this piece by using a combination of reverse tracks (piano, glitchy pad, glockenspiel) and playing the chords in reverse (strings, guitar, male choir). It kind of sounds like a mess that thankfully rights itself half way through :slight_smile:

i looked for palindromic words using letters a-g. degged and afeefa were the longest. degged means watered (a plant) and afeefa is a name i think similar to aviva which means spring / renewal. so the theme was spring growth (weirdly the previous time we did this junto my track was called spring palindromes)

i made a palindrome from a synth pad by reversing the halfway point
fed this into protoplasm with reverse echo

played notes d e g pasted and reversed the midi. same with a f e . repeated d e g g e d. low frequencies increased throughout and stereo widened too.

recorded repeated and second half reversed in audacity

I thought about trying to make harmonic palindromes, like chords that reflect on themselves, but it’s not really how my music brain works. So I focused on stuff happening over time:
The main structure of the track is a palindrome - when things fade in and out, etc. and when chords and melodic bits play.
The bass notes and rhythm is a palindrome, and has a palindromic thing happening with the attack and decay on the envelope shifting in mirror image.
The chord progession is a palindrome.
Each drum part is a palindrome, some of which would line up perfectly if you notated the whole track out and flipped it down the middle, some of which don’t work like that, but each loop does mirror down the middle, e.g. the kick drum is 4 bars of 5/4 while the main structure flips around 9 bars of 5/4.
There’s a plinky palindrome melody which also has a reversed reverb for the first half of the track and then a normal reverb for the second half.
Not thrilled by the results, but that’s not really the spirit of the Junto.

My first ever junto project.

I wrote a piece called “Palindromes” as part of an electro-acoustic installation on board a submarine at the Australian National Maritime Museum in 2014/15. This one was acoustic in performance, but each cell was recorded separately and then a little bespoke app on a Raspberry Pi in the sub has been remixing them according to various chance principals for 4 years since.

In this case, I grabbed the MIDI from the original score, dropped each cell into Ableton, recorded a performance intuitively, and then spent a day playing around with new softsynths I’d bought from Korg, recording lots of automation over the top… fun.

Cheers! Most of the synth sounds are from an old free plugin called Synth1. The more pizzicato sounds with reversed delays etc. are a Kaivo.

I used 2 samples from 2 works in progress, both made from a vst syth improve recorded on 03082018, which gives this its title.

Sample 1 was reversed and appended to itself, creating the initial palindrome. This was stretched and expanded.

Sample 2 was similarly appended, then treated 3 different ways and multitracked to create the deep palindrome(!) which underlies the central section.

The unstretched Sample 1 palindrome was doubled and expanded to match the first iteration in length, then lowered in pitch and treated with reverb. This provides a double palindromic accompaniment to the first. I hope. It’s tired and I’m getting late…

This is basically a two-minute jam performance with the Moog DFAM (with trying to do some kind of symmetric knob setting, which didn’t work out), recorded, streched, mirrored and layered in different variations, always symmetric, including stereo and phase symmetry and looking into the mirror in the bathroom (for shaving).

There is something wrong with SUSY, i.e. supersymmetry. The more I tried to symmetry this, the less I liked it. So what you hear is not the final version, which was perfect symmetric but dumb, it is the version before. Less symmetry, more fun to hear (if you like listening to this kind of sound).

In terms of achieving goals, for me that was a mistake; however, the journey was highly instructive and worth the failure.

• Used tarot cards to choose a key signature and 8 notes to create the project.
• The tarot cards came up with the key signature of F Major and the following 8 notes : D C C F B flat C C F

• Created the project in Reaper with the above information

My take was phonetic palindromes so I chopped up a chord progression, got Burroughs to say his piece forward and backwards and added some portuguese palindromes to mix.

All done using Elektron Digitakt some samples from a palindrome track, William S Burroughs alleged phonetic palindromes and some portuguese phonetic palindromes spoken by yours truly.

Sorry about the roughness on sample transitions. It was somewhat intended.

I “performed” the track while recording mostly the vocal samples and some of the chords – on top of a short sequence with an LFO changing play direction for randomness.

It made the Digitakt feel like an SP-404 but way more advanced :slight_smile:

Late, Im late!

I started working on this track last month and called it “Pallindrome”, coincidence. I finished it off for this weeks project. The track is the result of recording multiple “takes” of Reaktor generative ensembles, and the Riff Generator Kontakt library into Logic Pro X. For the “chords” (really note clusters) I specified a key for each single line “take”, and then 5 takes were recorded. Each note or non note occurred every quarter note. The resultant minute or so of MIDI was reversed and added to the end of the original to create the first palindrome. A second layer was created by using the first as a seed. the MIDI from the first part was fed into Riff Generator as an arpeggio to trigger note shifts in the generated riff. The generated MIDI was then reversed per the first step. The pad drone was created from the first two parts with the notes “merged”, that is, that all the notes in the MIDI part were selected and then joined, to create long held notes.
