hi everyone. this my take on this assignment. i did enjoy the ride and hope that so do you;)

this is ¶radio hummingbird’s contribution to this week’s disquiet junto with the serial number 0407. in short, the requirement for this contribution was to record the period of strange radio signals during a nighttime ride through the middle of nowhere where the regular broadcast signal just dropped dead.

for this track i utilised my little travel modular synthesizer plus a sequencer. nothing fancy and nothing else.

no daw or computers were used, except for a simple final master run cleaning up the recording subtly. easy.

please enjoy and keep on riding, there’s no need to ever stop :slight_smile:

I used the Universitie of Twente Wide-band WebSDR website that was linked by @VassilisP further up. I found a random station mentioned in the chatbox and routed into VCV rack with a few different plugins to mangle the sound. Recorded back into Ableton and did a bit of filter messing around. I found I could get quite a nice effect if I rapidly turned on / off the EQ plugin - so I drew that into the automation lane.

I loved to drive fast by night but the radio was unable to catch a decent signal and I never knew if it was police sirens or aliens waves before the crash.

Recorded with Audacity.
Soundsource ist my SONY ICF-7600
Recorded two tracks (long wave and short wave) of sound between the stations. Audacity noise supression (as far as you can do it, when the sound is noise …). Compressor and a bit of reverb.
I paulstretched 30 seconds of track two to the length of the piece. I LOVE paulstretch. Paul Nasca ist my hero!

Based on samples from the online radio websdr. Two notes found and a stem from Melda Oscillator modulated with the Melda Wavefolder. Parts of the radio samples were processed through Elcobit’s Ovalizer.
I would like to thank @howthenightcame for the idea of the online shortwave radio station (I discovered the Dutch station after his comment).

Interstitial. The space between radio stations is an invitation to experiment. 3am on a flat road is a speculative mood, a time to stretch out thoughts and wonder if the road does in fact go anywhere. Stereo space is the suspension between known things, a feeling and a thought which is projected into the vacuum of space. It is left there to dissipate.

I started with the recording of a phaser, coming out of my Vox amp with nothing attached. Plugged the guitar in and found a riff sympathetic with this mood of looking out, of feeling a little alone but being OK with that. Exploring with that emotional posture. I also had a short guitar bit recorded through a mc.delay object in Max MSP. An initial 3am spacey thought is often followed by something more grounded, like “I could be a sound architect, but first I need to send out an invoice.” Something out there and something practical.

I was really enjoying the ominious vibes from this prompt. For my track I got some morse code and numbers stations samples from Freesound.org and played around with them using Paul stretch and then Samplr on the Ipad.

I’ve driven through parts of the Western Australian Wheatbelt at night and I’ve wondered if I am inadvertently driving through forbidden country. Are the spirits of old still lurking in the dark corners, just out of sight? Probably - there are many places where I feel I can’t stay, because I’ve trespassed.

This piece was made from recording various appliances using an electromagnetic microphone. These are signals we usually can’t hear unless summoned through a conduit. Perhaps it’s the same thing with the old spirits.

Random recording off the radio and noodling on a Korg Monotron Delay with much effect layering in Ableton. Not a lot of time this week so this was done in a bit of a rush.

I was inspired by Welcome to Night Vale’s noisy sun.

I got the original sample (of the sound in the middle) off of YouTube, and then mangled it in Audacity and Logic, anyone guess what the original sample was? :joy:

Just managed to get my homework in… The pressure helps. It removes the luxury of decisions and makes for pragmatism. I think I actually like this track. Thanks for the inspiration Mark (I was only able to spend 1 of your earth hours…but at least I finished). Cheers g-f
