I don’t think of a pastiche as bad, per se. I thought of it as a word describing an exercise in copying the style of another. But Wikipedia says it’s even more appropriate to this junto exercise in the “or more” part. The following is a quote from wikipedia’s pastiche entry…
A pastiche is a work of visual art, literature, theatre, or music that imitates the style or character of the work of one or more other artists.[1] Unlike parody, pastiche celebrates, rather than mocks, the work it imitates.[2]
