I have never really experimented with tuning before, so I had a lot to learn! I ended up using Subaqueous Music’s “Scale of Fifths” preset (https://www.subaqueousmusic.com/sof/) to retune Ableton’s Analog synth to a “scale of fifths.”

From there, I thought I would do something with Aristotle’s and Plato’s description of the modes and the emotions they stir (however, to my knowledge, our understanding of modes actually comes from medieval theorists who misunderstood the ancient Greek modes and got it all wrong).

I also thought the sound of 12-tone equal temperament vs. alternate tunings was interesting, so this piece alternates between the two.

The piece starts in 12tet Lydian mode, portraying a kind of unthinking satisfaction (described as “enfeebling the mind.”) Then the Mixolydian mode introduces some sadness, and the listener goes between the two tuning systems. The Phrygian mode portrays enthusiasm for the new world, and the Dorian mode at the end shows ambition and enthusiasm (in theory!)

This piece definitely reflects my feelings about current events. I’m hoping we can come through it and make something better for everybody.

SO late to the party on this, but: I worked through all the math to convert a ratio-based tuning to a set of numbers you can plug in to Logic’s user tuning feature, retuning your project to whatever (12-step) scale you like.

Also did a quartet using it for the project.

Beautiful. So many world cultures overlapping here, refracted through the blues. Love this tuning too.

Thanks!
Trombones can easily play every kind of scale because they don’t have fix valves, but a slide mechanism to alter the pitch. I think the only instruments that can only be played in tempered scale are keyboard instruments like the piano and string instruments with frets like the guitar.
But I used sampled trombones for my piece and adjusted them to a just scale electronically.
