The beautiful and compelling duet by Chris Ledwidge and Michael Ash Sharbaugh, @Mikash69 and @Chris_Ledwidge, entitled, “The Wolf’s Baleen” evokes the lone agony that the wolf must endure. I tried to capture the fate of the wolf with recorder and violin tracks.

Started with attempt to play some drums on the Push, then gave up and decided to go for some random-ish generative sequencing (I think that’s the right term?). I have dabbled with that in the past on various Live devices or some hardware “chance” effecrts (always with fun results) but have been wanting to play around with that more. Always great to hear something and say wow, I don’t think I could have played that myself, thanks machine friend! So I pulled some samples from a Mr Bill pack I’ve been wanting to check out into drum rack in Live, then added the Melodic Steps Max for Live device from the great Creative Extensions pack. Hit the random button a bunch, tweaked it for a while until it sounded jolly and let it roll. Added second drum track with same device, but randomized the parameters again, then automated muting and unmuting the track randomly. Also added some sub-bass, and a “bass” sample loop from Mr. Bill that made me think of baby elephants for some reason (not that I’ve ever heard one, but there’s the title); chopped in Simpler and put both those tracks through same device. I think the results worked out ok and mostly fit the delicious madness of the other two tracks. I’d probably refine more with more time. This is the right kind of weird that makes me feel great.

For my contribution, I improvised along with their track on the Rav D minor tongue drum. And I still haven’t gotten out of the habit of using “tongues” on the name of tracks where I use that drum. I’m a child. Well, “tongue” just sounds cool. Played along for two takes through, and used the first (that way I can totally say “one take only, nailied it” right?) Then took a hatchet, a butchers as the brit’s say, through and just kinda messed things up a little. Looped a few phrases and generally messed around with the recording with no real rhyme or reason I can recall today. Recorded video for this I hope to tweak (take a butchers to … ) and upload to the tube in a day or two. Cover image is the other contributor’s cover images blended with video still of me playing the drum.

I beat the clock and completed a contribution for this week! I used a random number generator and got 73. I was in such a rush to have time to work on this in the final hours that I didn’t scroll the whole thread to see if it had already been chosen–apologies if it had.

I added to a beautiful track by @mattmadd and @Chris_Ledwidge Du (o J)et No. 34 in A minor. Details of my process are on the track link, but I just tried to add some airy, background vibes to what was already a gorgeous piece. Hats off to you both for making something so beautiful.

UPDATED AND CORRECTED VERSION!!!
I had to replace my file as I noticed there was a harsh clicking sound on some of my guitar parts. I was able to trace it back to a plug-in I had unwisely added at the last minute. I de-activated it and took advantage of a fresh listen to slightly alter the beginning: now the drums and guitar come in together after a swell of the synth patch and I think it’s much improved.

I chose @joyneski and @melondruie’s collaboration Dronedrumdrub build on. I love the combination of glitchy percussion and gritty sounding drones in this piece and the idea of doing something with a driving rhythm was appealing after my more calm and pensive contributions so far.

But I still wanted to stick to my basic parameters for this set of juntos, which means: minimally treated electric guitar, playing along live with the existing track. I find Dronedrumdrum pretty complete-sounding as is so my goal was to accent the percussion with a minimalist, muted guitar vamp that attempts to channel a bit of Andy Gill/The Ex/No Wave energy (though I was also thinking of a J Dilla song called Drive Me Wild).

I remixed the existing tracks and added a bit of extra compression and some saturation to the percussion track which I think makes them sound punchy in a really cool way. My only other adornment is that at the very end you can hear some reverb-y harmonics on a nylon string guitar which is sampled from a voice memo I made to explore different approaches to the piece.

This has been a rewarding project and I hope to be back soon. I’ve had trouble replying directly to other people’s posts (there seems to be some kind of newbie limit?) but i’ve listened to and enjoyed a lot of this work, especially the pieces built on my initial guitar improv and my duet with @ChrisLedwidge.

I randomly chose 3 Placebo tracks, then listened to them and responded the most to #45 “derbydrive” by @chaonaut from @gibbsdavidl’s piece “Reverse Java”. I mixed and stereoized those two tracks, then combined them with some recent recordings of waves and dock creaks at our local small boat harbor which I tweaked to fit nicely with the piece.

The random number generator gave me a piece by @wagneric and @Xylr (this one). I had almost no time to complete it so I quickly designed a sound then did one take of keyboard playing. I decided it was missing something more so I did a second take of a lead. Nothing very inspiring, but it is at least something.

Here is my (probably late?) submission:

So… based on @abalone and @morgulbee 's contributions (thank you both!), I wanted to add maybe some whistling, maybe some guitar.

I’ve had a sick kid the last couple of days, which is why I’m only submitting now, but it also meant that it was tricky to record anything. So here, I am embracing it and layering a few different, mainly botched, attempts. What was supposed to be clean recordings of melodies ends up being field recording, a toddler asking for extra attention and a biscuit (justified! and eventually hitting me with a broom too…), the neighbour’s kid asking where is the other one of my kids, some birds, cars and buses…

Others here reminding us that this is a place for experimentation and learning and reflection encouraged me to submit. This is more about what’s around and the uncertainty, and less about what was actually planned.

Hello all. I chose to add some Volca FM organ + Avalanche Run delay/reverb to a duet from @Leonard_Bowman & @homeontheland. I tried to make sure I was adding to, but not distracting from, their wonderful textural tracks. So I chose what I hoped would be a complimentary timbre, and kept parts to a pedal-tone droning bass, and a midrange minimal melody part that also added some ringing overtones. Please hang out and enjoy the drones… :v:
