For the second part of the trio I added a track to two contributions of the first round: “Poem” by @dandante and “Maybe Going Somewhere” by @he_nu_ri .

For both, I added one layer of Plaits using various engines. For “Maybe Going Somewhere”, I also used the drum engines of Plaits to add a beat. Maybe going somewhere still is 96 BPM, D Major. The Poem is now 116 BPM and also D Major.

Thanks to @dandante and @he_nu_ri for their tracks and Dylan Marlais Thomas for the poem. The original tracks are linked on SoundCloud.

I added to @encym’s excellent, guitar-based, track, Frugality (Encym – The-loneliest-number-disquiet0591). I used this as an exercise in MIDI processing in Ableton. I used a MIDI pitch tracker on a filtered version of the original track (to reduce the range of notes), then passed the MIDI to two tracks with Arturia’s Augmented Strings (both with a bass pizzicato patch, with slight variations). The MIDI was processed with MIDI echo and note length changes, and arpeggiated in both cases. In one case, the scale was forced into a Hungarian Minor.

I took @RabMusicLab’s track and used Kilohearts Multipass to pan the melody (all below 1kHz) to the left, leaving the airy birds, traffic and bicycle squeaks across the stage. My addition (panned right) uses the Heavyocity Foundation Nylon Guitar plugin add a counter melody. This leaves the centre free for next week…

Inspired by the ethereal and mysterious atmosphere of @derangement disquiet0591 I tried to patch something complementary.

I took a pre-existing melody, recorded single notes with a 0-Coast in a Morphagene reel. 0-Ctrl is controlling Morphagene’s playback and splices with pressure gate output and Mimeophon’s feedback and color with pressure cv output. Added auto filter and Vallhalla Plate in Ableton Live.

I added a track to @cjm 's submission

I recorded an improvisation in response to the initial track and then chose a 12 bar loop to cycle against the original 10 bar loop. To break the repetition I manipulated my loop with cableguys shaperbox. To top it off I added some depth with a bit of delay and a hint of vocoder.

I chose 7+7+7 by @orbit_f for a first track because I liked it very much. Since the strings gave us a very lively sound, I wanted to put a static sound alongside it. In a first try I added some gongs, in a second some ambience noise, and I ended with a combination of both at the risk of overstuffing it now. To stay in the sign of the number 7, there are 3x 7 Gong events, and the ambience starts 7 times (and only while the strings stops). I avoided the left-right-step, because I love the stereo image of the strings. I hope I managed to keep the mysterious mood of the first track and still leave room for a third track - I’m very curious.

For a second track i chose Locrian X by @Forelight because I always like drones. ‘Locrian’ seemed to be the name of a drone band which tends to make apocalyptic music, so I looked for cataclysmic sounds (bass and partly rhythmic noise) and added them. I think there is plenty room for beats, vocals, solos.

This is my first Disquiet Junto participation. I hope I put the link in the right place.

For the first instrument of the trio I chose [DishwasherDrone [Disquiet0591] pt 1] by Sonaura. I love this dishwasher solo. I like the paradox of no silence, yet tons of space. I was immediately inspired by this recording. I bet quite a few of us chose it. Now it’s a duet and could become a very tasty trio!
For my instrument I used a Sunbeam microwave oven. I recorded it for about forty seconds: opened it, put a glass of cold water inside, closed the door, pressed the “express start +30sec” button, waited for the beeps, opened the door, and took out the glass of hot water.
I used that clip to make my part. it’s monophonic for the first two thirds and then some 2 voice overlapping occurs. I tried to make it something I could play on my viola! I used some pitch shifting obviously, a comb filter at one point, and some granular scanning at times. pretty minimal.

For this track I started with @Alyce_Santoro’s lovely flute trio. I wanted something that was rich in tone but still had some room.

I’ve been playing around with my Syntakt for a while (I’ve never been very good with setting out to make actual rhythmic content). I used three tracks, all with variations on the same SY Chord machine. Recorded this in an evening.

The most difficult part of this experiment was the task of choosing which composition to partner with.
Every track is a gem! I eventually decided on Orbit_f’s 7+7+7 double bass piece. I liked the sparseness of it, which I thought would work well with the tools that I had on hand since I’m away from my studio and up at a cottage in the woods. So all I had was a laptop and a phone to use as a microphone. The bird song, random scratches and rustlings and the sounds of passing boats were given a bit of menace with some modulated reverb and then woven into the spaces between and within 7+7+7. I’m not sure of the mix, since I left my headphones at home and had to rely on the little speakers on my laptop.

I chose “Abstraction Cactus Flower” by @Alyce_Santoro I added an improvised solo guitar to Alyce’s flute trio. As Alyce wrote “all are welcome to use this piece as a basis for improvisation.” I very much appreciate the Georgia O’Keefe quote Alyce mentioned, and find it resonant with the music here: "Details are confusing. It is only by selection, by elimination, by emphasis, that we get at the real meaning of things.” I tried to leave space for whoever’s next to add their own selection and emphasis, and to eliminate their own details.

Very nice! The piece has an interesting off kilter feel to it. Makes me think of a brass ensemble still playing after one too many cocktails on a boat that is listing to one side…

Hi all,
The beautifully restrained kick-off track by @Kitzmann proved to be just the ticket for me to float some acoustic guitar clouds, fed through my old granular friend Mood, over his ever so inspiring, invigorating carpet. There’ll be some recognisable (just about) steel string guitar to be had if you wait long enough (until almost all the way through).

Thank you Andreas, improvising over your fine source material was a joy! Looking forward to seeing who picks this up to add their part to it.

Many great tracks were contributed to last week’s project, and several I love as they are - as already complete compositions. For contributing I was intrigued by @Krakenkraft’s track. There is already much included, but at the same time enough room.
I made the following additions:

a bass-sound (played once in a while on 3/6 with separate modulated reverb
a Pad-sound heavily automated with CC-Stepper
single high sounds with pitched following notes (MultiTap Delay)
strong modulated piano-melody snippets improvised to the track
a solo string sound (Olafur Arnalds Evolution)

All other sounds are different Spitfire LABS.

Perhaps I have added too much…

I really like the track contributed by @Beto. I improvised on my keyboard to this track, using a Hauschka Toolset grid-sound (different sounds for different sections of the keyboard). I had no time left, so I applied no edits and just left it as it is…
By the way, this is the first duet in which I panned the tracks at least partially to the left and right
I was unsure whether I really should publish this unpolished track, but here it is!
