I was listening to a podcast recently about the disintegration of boundaries between musical genres, and how that was part of the new evolution of music. Which also made me wonder - what happens when sounds just…disintegrate? So I constructed a track from some samples and sent the track through a sonic washing machine.

hello.

i don’t (yet?) have an entry for this week’s project, but i wanted to post anyway, firstly because it’s my birthday, and secondly because i just released a new record. as far as i know it’s still okay for junto members to post about their releases, but if something has changed please feel free to delete. (i tried to contact @disquiet about this but i guess he’s been too busy.)

anyway, the record is called “journey to the spirit world” and i describe it as a magick spell, with the title also being a statement of intent for its effect. the music itself is long ambient drone textures without any beats or vocals, which made me think it’d fit in well with the general junto vibe.

it would mean a lot to me if people could check this out.

As a casual bird watcher, I’m constantly observing birds and listening to their calls and songs. Especially when I’m hiking in a pine forest near our home. Here at the house at night, there are Great Horned Owls that occasionally call to each other. This is my interpretation of the evolutionary development of the song of a large extinct bird species through thousands of years.

This repeating and subtly evolving sequence was recorded into Ableton Live using Make Noise 0-CTRL controller/sequencer and 0-Coast synthesizer. I slowly manually manipulated the parameters and filters on the two instruments. Used Strymon Big Sky, Aqusmatiq Dedalus Delay and Cableguys ShaperBox 3 for effects. Maybe I did not follow the instructions… I gaved an AI the following task; “Write a poem with three verses about phylogeny and music”. For this poem I made music in post-stone-age-trance-style.

The tree of life is a symphony
Of branches and leaves and roots
Each species plays a melody
That echoes through the shoots

The notes are shaped by history
By genes and traits and cues
Each variation is a harmony
That enriches the tunes

The song is sung by diversity
By forms and colors and moods
Each expression is a beauty
That inspires the moods

For this assignement I took Gute Nacht, o Wesen from BWV 227 Jesu, Meine Freude and tried to depict a kind of evolution starting from Mellotron, to ARP 2600 to Ableton’s Voice Box.
Not much of a genre but I wanted to focus on electronic redention of a vocal score paying a little tribute to the great Wendy Carlos.
I first thought of two voice inventions inspired by this but then I thought of recording a chorale singing a part and blending the other instruments in, but then I thought of outlining this kind of possible technological evolution within this “genre” in the XXth century.
I am in a hurry today so I recorded everything without taking patch notes.

I first copied the part with Dorico, exported single voices MIDI files and full score MIDI.
Used a Mellotron emulation, my Arp 2600 clone and then Ableton Voice Box Choir preset.
Added a bit of Shimmer Plate reverb (Hybrid Reverb Preset).

Hey All,
I was looking around on an old hard drive from 2011. It has stuff from when I was just learning how to use a DAW. Specifically when I first got the Akai APC 20 and suddenly I understood the session view in ableton and I never have left it since. I still didn’t know much but I spent a lot of time working with it. I think this track hit some developments in those early years.

In the summer of 2011 I was in Japan visiting with my wife’s parents. I made an album using 2pac’s acapellas and the soft synth Sylenth. The first bit is from that.
The next is from a actual CD I made and when I started sampling CDs and chopping them up.
Then it mellows out and me experimenting with knob twiddling on fxs.
The drum part is when I was really into launching scenes to change things up.
I found an old tape recorder mic and used that to start recording my own voice.
I found this impersonation of Scott Walker singing will.i.am and added the backing track.
The next is some driving beats.
I think it shows some evolution but I basically still use the same set up. I just added an APC40 to it.
I look at these tracks as a kind of journal cause I can remember making these tracks and I really enjoyed and continue to enjoy doing this stuff.

i still don’t have a piece for this - i’ve been a combination of busy and sick - but i was sure something seemed familiar about the prompt. i went digging and it looks like it’s pretty close to Disquiet Junto Project 0580: Evo Evol Evolve – Disquiet. not to say that it’s a deliberate repeat, or even that there’s anything particularly bad (or otherwise) about exploring the same kind of territory, it just struck me as interesting.

i’m pretty stuck for an idea, though. i don’t want to just rehash 0580.

I recorded a traveling subway whose sound created a natural rhythm. I created a loop of the the sound, added an 808 Kick sample, and topped it off with a pipe organ playing a sustained C major chord. I’ve been thinking about this prompt since Thursday and am ready to give up. My idea was to do a “what if” track in the sense of “what if genre X would have evolved into Z instead of Y”. As I could not come up with anything plausible on my own, I did some further research into evolution of musical styles, with music map, among others. Doing this, I figured I knew too little technical details (like typical rhythmic patterns, tempos or the like) about most genres to branch off a plausible alternative version of ghettotech or whatever. As I do not want to produce septuple Ska or 60 bpm unplugged Breakcore, I throw in the towel and give up.

Hey this is my 2cent but don’t give up! there’s nothing like trying to gain more understanding into something. If you have the time then just experiment and see what happens. I’m kinda new to the disquietjunto community but it seems that people is open and assignments are prompts, not strict laws. One of the best things is how many different interpretations/attitudes/realizations come up every week. Have fun!

The musical tree of life is as difficult to apprehend as the biological one - but it is clear that there are common, if mysterious, origins. Raw rhythms and primordial pitches combine compellingly, leading to modern practices that are not as different as one might think.

Featuring operatic tenor and soprano voices, renaissance drums, psaltery, percussion, full orchestra, brushed drum kit, upright bass, muted trumpet, tenor sax, piano, electric bass and guitar, rock drum kit, and synthesizer.

Process - I’m a sucker for evolutionary themes, so I started by actually studying a bit what phylogeny means (basically it’s a formalization of “tree of life” stuff). Then I selected “common ancestor” (i.e. old) instruments (voice, renaissance drums), wrote a simple motif, and developed it from there - moving chromatically and switching to incrementally more modern instrumentation (orchestra, jazz quintet, synth-rock).

I took a blues bass walk and degenerated it into a bit of a crawl using a subharmonicon-inspired M4L device and the Reason Objekt physical modelling plugin, with a bit of PaulStretch for good measure. Not sure it’s quite phylogeny, but in my COVID-affected state this was my best effort.

Hi all,
I decided to take the prompt of evolution and apply it to my personal sampling journey which started with cut up mini cassette recording, then a Casio SK1 I got one christmas, a Dr boss SP-202 sampler and then recently with granular hardware and the Chase Bliss Mood and Ableton plugins.

Thinking about where sampling could go in the future I always liked the idea that if you cycled through every color of every pixel on a monitor you would eventually see every image possible, seeing conceptually into the future with images that haven’t existed yet.

Applied to the idea of sound I thought this idea may be applied to white noise someday, filtering and shaping the chaos wall of sound into whatever you wanted.

I found a two note interval on an old cassette and reworked it through my personal history of sampling and ended the piece attempting to manipulate white noise with Ableton plug ins like, Hysteresis, Lagrange and Grainstrain to recreate the original.

Just did a little change from a bluesy scheme towards more jazzy and beyond, bit modern, perhaps. I have to say I had more ambitious things in mind, but it actually all sounded not so great, too intentional or something like that.
