Just ordered a shield that I’m gonna build for a buddy of mine. Are the encoders on the shield debounced, or do I need to take care of that myself?

hello, forgive me for the stupid question, but it doesn’t work for me normally Touch OSC, cheat codes template works great, but how to get other scripts to work with my IPad, in Touch OSC
there is a [KEY] template, how to make it work with FM7, Molly and Polly, etc.
I will be grateful for the answer!

hi hi! not a stupid question at all.

OSC isn’t standardized like MIDI, because you can create totally arbitrary OSC messages. so, each script needs to state what it accepts as OSC input and that needs to be linked to note events. if a script hasn’t added this functionality and specified it, then received OSC messages won’t do anything.

the reason why cheat codes works “out the box” is because I specified a naming protocol and the TouchOSC templates keep the names consistent. i don’t think there needs to be a “norns standard” for simple OSC-as-MIDI-notes, but I’ll make sure elegant solutions like this one are better represented in the documentation. a microstudy opportunity!!

a friendly fyi. i got my norns recently and maybe played the hell out of it but it sort of got quieter and quieter until today the audio out was sounding like a bad connection. i checked it out and looks like one of pre-soldered pads didn’t stay soldered for the audio jack. i re-soldered it and its fixed - no problem whatsoever. just pointing it out if someone runs into this

What solder and iron are you using?

Thank you for pointing this out! Mine has been randomly having low output which up to this point I’ve been trying hunt down in software settings. Definitely checking out these solder pads tomorrow!

I got a “lonove” soldering iron (60w) and it came with lead-free solder. didn’t use any flux…

is there a VERY easy (and i stress very easy) way to get the norns shield to display the norns video imagery out of the HDMI port?

i REALLY would like to be able to use the graphics for videosynth source!

That soldering station looks ok, but I’d be suspect of the included solder. I’d go and buy some good quality rosin core solder, doubly so if you want to stick with lead free.

My daughter built a shield yesterday. I did the SMD work she did the through hole. She’s wanted to build a synth for a long time. Wasn’t until I was mid way through building a few Shields it dawned on me it was the perfect project for her.

the shield has the caps/resistors built into the design to debounce the encoders. check out the schematic to see how this is done.

Purchased and built a Norns Shield a couple of weeks ago then was lucky enough to acquire a Norns on the used market. Why does navigating on the OG Norns feel “smoother” than on my Shield? It feels like is takes longer for an action to occur on screen when I turn an encoder. Adjusting a parameter with an encoder feels delayed just a bit on my Shield. Anything I can do to remedy this behavior possibly? Thx!

my digitone doesn’t show up in the norns midi menu when connected with usb,
do i need a usb midi cable or usb host ?

I’ve noticed this too actually. but my shield is missing some pullup resistors that I never bothered fixing, so that might explain it in my case…
